JF-17 Block-3 -- Updates, News & Discussion

The fact that PAC has not moved to full manufacture of the airframe is very dissappointing for sure. While there is a commercial contract in place, this is for each block and PAF should have moved to full airframe assembly in Pakistan by now through one of the blocks. I am not sure what/why there is indeed a holdup on this front.

Probably simply since there are other reasons that the will of some forumers!

These might be industrial - and as such financial - considerations in the way that CAC/AVIC heavily invested a lot in this project regardless a true PLAAF request and as such a co-production of certain important components might result in some sort of cash-flow back to China. If Pakistan had paid more, a full technological transfer and full local production might have been possible.

But as I said ... just an idea.

And Pakistan has to build up its aviation industry, and it would cost much more than the whole FC-1/JF-17 project.

PAF can ask ToT of both fuselage sections as offset deal while finalizing contract for additional JF-17s for its fleet.

Surely it could ... but as most things in life it depends on money!

You are absolutely correct in that, although work is being done to atleast have the capabilities to produce 100% such when needed..

Nigeria bought 3 Thunders for $180 millions. That's $60 m for a BLK 2 config. Even if we say that $30 m is the unit price while the rest is for logistic support, training, munitions etc. then what will be the price of BLK 3???
IMO it will cross $40-45m a piece. Not so cheap now.

Nigeria is paying $184.3 millions not only for 3 JF-17s.

50% of the amount is for training of pilots and technical staff, logistic support (first and second line spares), provision of complete infrastructure to establish flight operations and maintenance.

Though NAF is operating F-7/ FT-7s, but do not have sophisticated maintenance setup for 4th generation aircraft.

Infrastructure for first and second line maintenance facilities costs huge amount of money and this is one time cost.

Subsequent buy of JF-17s will cost less for NAF.

Country base customization for JF-17 Block 3 will include choice of engine (Russian or Chinese), choice of avionics package (Chinese or Western systems) and choice of weapons' integration (Chinese or Western).

Variation in price will mainly depend on customer's choices.

Trust me in 10 years; they would have crashed most of these jets or they will be sitting idle with no maintenance. Such is the state of the Nigerian state of mind. I see this more as a continued logistics support without which what ever equipment that is given will stagnate. So yes the amount is valid and renewable with other support contracts to come later.

You don't make each part under one roof - read one country. It is not economical. See how tornados and even JSF F-35 are produced. Know some basic agile engineering methods.

Production of F-35 was internationalized because this aircraft was meant for export.

Contract for production of certain subsystem must have been awarded to international companies depending on country's origin, their capability and cost effective production process.

Though F-35 is the most advance fighter aircraft, the overall cost of its production came down to an affordable price due to internationalizing the production of F-35 subsystems.

F-22 was a different case.

It was made to counter USSR aerial threat.

Since its production line was kept in secret, maintaining such facility including expensive manpower and production of futuristic technological products must have escalated the cost per aircraft.

Termination of production was mainly due to:

1. Reduction of threat - USSR split into many independent countries.

2. Cost of production was not affordable to USAF.
