Japan considers building its own fighter jets

Base on Vietnamese logic, how can japan build their own fighter jet if the engine is not built by them? Japan cannot build a 5th gen engine

:pop:
Japan can built a helicopter carrier which China has yet to do. So it shouldn't be hard to do that for an engine. They even built their own military transport plane.

is there any possibility that Japan could extend the production life of F15J component and assemble in Vietnam? It could save cost to replace about 350 old aircrafts of VPAF

Technically we can. However, for us, it has been phased out because we are to replace it with the F-35As.

We have around 223 active F15Js, btw

Most probably that the majority of these will be kept in reserve, but at over 150, I think we can afford to give 1-2 squadrons to the Philippines. The only issue that would remain would be the maintenance cost and their ability to shoulder it.
This will escalate tension between Japan and China, which will not be good for both the countries. Japan has been made fool by the US for quite some time, even Okinawa is still under US occupation in the name of 'protecting Japan'. Japan has to come out of its dormancy, and try to act and behave like a sovereign country. Continue to keep getting involved in US mess would not be wise for Japan.

Japan selling fighter aircraft to Philippines will antagonize China? Claim the Senkaku islands has already escalated tensions so don't blame the U.S. for that matter. Most of the Asian nations are already siding with the U.S. with hardly any effort on our part to persuade them to join us.

It was under my impression that the Philippine Air Force has been maintaining and using Clark Air Force Base for 710th Special Operations Wing. I think that it would be pertinent for the PAF to expand on this. Its actually a tactically placed location for further air units.

Since it used to be a US Air Force base, it is a perfect location and since there is no more news on developing this airbase into a large civilian airport, the PH Air Force could expand the base if the funds are used correctly. For now, it seems the people in the PH Air Force are looking into the acquisition of JAS 39 Gripen after the successful procurement of the Korean F/A-50.

Ever since Japan removed the military export ban we had implemented for decades, we can sell air units, land units, to naval units to partners. I don't see why there should be any bias here, I mean, the Russian Federation sells Sukhois to China and Vietnam, while knowing both are rivals. Russia sells submarines to Vietnam, and at the same time sells anti-submarine air units to China. All is fair in military sales, my dear. Why should Japan have inhibitions?

Come on, even the United States sells F-16s to Pakistan and to India, knowing that both are rival nations. The same in regards to selling F16s to Turkey and Greece -- while knowing they are both rivals.

:)

What are the chances of getting the Gripen?

Are Gripens even qualified compared to the avionics and flight record of the F16 or the F15 variants?

Interesting, thanks for the update, my friend.

Wouldn't know, but I've read they are capable fighters. Depends if the U.S. can match it by selling F16s or F15s cheaply.

If this news is to be believed DND’s next mission: The Saab JAS 39 Gripen acquisition project , then the chances is that there is a possibility that JAS 39 will be chosen after the procurement of F/A-50 as the JAS 39 is cost-effective when compared to other fighter aircraft of the same generation and it can take off in short runways.

Considering that the current government is acquiring weapons, vehicles and modern technologies to make the whole PH military having minimal credible defense, I guess we can't afford high-end jets. I am also not sure if US will allow Japan to export Japanese-made F-15 as I think there is a rule or something about technology transfer since the Japanese F-15 are license-built. I could be wrong though...

Senkaku islands are geographically closer to China than to Japan so they belong to China without doubt. China has every right to claim these islands, by force if necessary. Japan has to leave behind its WWII defeat and start acting like a sovereign country rather than as a US colony (granted that Okinawa is still under US occupation). Japanese are hell of a people, damn hardworking, innovative, loyal to their country, and above all, true Asians. Rise of China is not only rise of China, it is rise of Asia, and time has come that all the Asian countries join hands and try to put an end to the Western/US hegemony.

That never was my point. Japan has all the right to sell whatever to whomever. All I am saying is, Japan should look at her own interest rather than that of the US.

I would like it if we refrain from digressing into the realm of territorial discussion(s).

How you say about Scarborough Shoal ? is it closer to China than to Philipines ?
I think it's most important to keep the Senkaku issue in limit conflict only. But China effort to spread the hate to Japanese too much. That benefited to Japan and others, anyway.

It's time for Japan to recall their potential power. It would be very fast for them to recover.
Poor Chinese.

After a US Congressional Review, it approved the advanced technological transfer to the Japan Ministry of Defense, where we applied key technologies to our own variant of the F-15J Kai, which was produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It borrows from the American F-15 J and CD variants, however, it is its own and hence if we decide to sell any of our current active 223 F-15 J Kais -- would be met with little to no objection from the United States. Given the Philippines' strategic position and special relations to both Japan and the Untied States -- I'm 100% sure the Yanks won't give us lip.

I really hope Japan and Turkey become partners in this, aim is same.
