Pulling off that suave demeanour with such grit is not an easy task. PHOTO: iO9

KARACHI: The role of suave British secret agent James Bond is highly coveted and in recent times, controversial.

With Daniel Craig’s contract ending, rumours of the new 007 are making headlines. Actor Idris Elba has been rumoured to be next in line for the role, which would make him the first black man to play the iconic fictional character.

This, however, has caused controversy to say the least, with the author of James Bond saying Elba was “too street” to play the role. Anthony Horwitz later apologised for the comments.

However, the final decision is yet to be made. Some reports have also suggested that football superstar David Beckam may also be tipped to play the role.

Meanwhile, we feel there are a few Pakistani celebrities who could pull off 007. After all, they know a thing or two about controversy.

Please note, we have let our imagination run wild:

1. Shahid Afridi

Lala would make the perfect Bond. Good looking, hot-tempered, aggressive, can’t stay in one place for more than five minutes (we are witness to that), Afridi will definitely be the one to beat.

2. Humayun Saeed

It might be difficult for you to imagine Saeed as Bond after seeing him in films such as Bin Roye, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi and soon Jawani Phir Na Aani, but anything can happen in Lollywood. You might just see Saeed in Main Hoon Bond.. James Bond very soon, produced under his own banner and obviously with as the main lead.

3. Shaan

The self-acclaimed Bond of the Pakistani film industry is right behind Saeed in the race. And he might even change the name from Mr Bond to Mr Shaan. For originality, you see. Plus, he has those action scenes down.

4. Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal

The only thing Akmal brothers have in common with James Bond is that they have a brotherly ‘bond’. But there’s no denying. However, the two being cast as Bond brothers would make for one entertaining movie.

5. Hamza Ali Abbasi

Abbasi would ace the screen test if he was asked to play Bond, but would probably end up getting offended and being offensive. We can already picture it: “Why is Bond having dinner with two girls at the same time?” “Why are the two girls having dinner at the same time?” and “Why are the girls even present in the scene?”

6. Waqar Zaka

Zaka is seemingly living his life like Bond: on the edge! The title of his show, Living on the Edge, is taken very seriously by him. We say Zaka deserves a shot 007, but only if he visits the barber first

7. Fawad Khan

The Khoobsurat Bond is already a Bond for many. It isn’t even up for debate.

8. Aamir Liaquat

Dr Aamir Liaquat as Samad Bond, live transmission on some channel in Ramazan, is all the entertainment I need. Just imagine the dialogues:“Waise Bond wond choro, yeh batao Ghalib film dekhi hai?”

9. Imran Khan

The PTI chief is definitely leading the race. He’s got everything required to be 007. The looks, the suaveness, the athleticism. Not sure if he’s make a good ‘secret’ agent though.

. . .
shahid afridi would make a bad bond... i haven't watched any kirket since 2004 but he is one aggressive and foul fellow... never liked him.

but really, there is no fun in being bond... i would rather choose to be a bond villain.
