J-10 a strategic choice for Bangladesh Air Force

There is one flaw in that line of argument....

BD does not need to match India plane for plane, tank for tank and ship for ship.

It just needs enough firepower to give the Indians a bloody nose.

I think with the expected rate of growth of the economy till 2035(assuming Covid-19 does not drag on for more than 1 year), then deterrence can be achieved by then with BD getting a good balance of Western/Turkish and Chinese weapons.

India is not that powerful as they got thumped by Pakistan back in February 2019 - they have lots of numbers but seem to lack in quality.

Pakistan got their own support AEW aircraft and IADS and F 16 with Amraam is a proven veteran beast. Now looking at the Bangladesh current situation? With what you can offer mutual punch with Indian Air Force?

Mig 29 is not up to the jobs that's why many countries starting to retire them earlier, name all political stringent US attached toward their fighter aircraft but you will still find many countries willing to take que que to acquire them at all cost, quality can't lies. F 16, F 15, F 18 still part of the best fighter, the most rugged and advanced available on earth.

If it's me...
The combo of F 16 block 72 along with F 15 E couple them with E7 AEW Wedgetail will create an utter deterrence any time any days. The number should be around 72 F 16 and 36 F 15 along with 4 Wedgetail at minimum to maximize the potential.

BAF go all USA? No way as BD wants to retain maximum sovereignty.

It will be a Western/Chinese combo with more fighters being ordered from China due to the main threat being India and not Myanmar.

If it was up to me(assuming economy grows as expected after Covid-19 is dealt with within a year max):

1. 2 squadrons(32 planes) of refurbished F-16s as they are cheaper than newer options and BAF will ideally want to get rid of all 4th gen fighters by mid 2030s to convert to full 5th generation fleet by then.

2. 4-6(64-96 planes) squadrons of J-31 as long as it is being ordered by multiple other countries and even better if China also buys it.

3. E-2Ds to control the F-16s and KJ-500s to control the J-31s.

4. MRSAMS blanketing the whole country.

Think that should suffice to keep both India and Myanmar at bay.

{@Aung Zaya do you know about the MAF fighter requirement?}

our requirement is at least 2 more sq single engine fighters to replace f7 and 1 more sq of fighter bomber to replace A5. if we got ToT of JF-17 block 3, it will be locally manufactured till 2030. 6 more Su-30 is now negotiating to make a sq. Hopefully will sign with Russia may be at the end of this year or at the start of next year.

You cannot afford that with an economy of only 70 billion US dollars.

There is only so much the generals can take from your small economy.

nd with this tiny economy ,vai they r doing much better thn ours in this particular branch..so whatever size their economy is our BAF top brass should learn from them..

True they seem more clued up than BAF top brass.

However that list is pure fantasy as they cannot afford it.

I expect 6 more SU-30s and that is about it for the MAF for some time.

Dude was talking about also replacing all their 20 F-7s/12 A5s and license producing the JF-17 Block 3. Yeah JF-17 Block 3 may be cheaper than Western fighters like F-16 Block 70 but it still comes with expensive stuff like AESA radars and PL-15 missiles.

You have to understand that Myanmar does have a black economy that their Military has a direct stake in. So don't fall for statistics and numbers open to public.

The Burmese military junta needs military strength to maintain their hold. Which is why they are willing and able to fund these procurements.

And please stop quoting economic growth of BD. It makes no difference if the leadership is not keen to make bold decisions.

Bangladesh should have gone all out for J 10s with ToT, for single engine MRCA platform a long time ago.

To be fair to BAF on the other hand, we needed more trained pilots, so the trainers and the infrastructure like radar coverage of the entire country was necessary. But the progress has been very slow to everyone's liking.

What kind of fighter bombers are you guys looking at to replace A5s? Given your insurgency problems, they must have been using A5s frequently.

I am aware of that.
The point is that the Myanmar Generals will not have anymore money than what they can extract out of that tiny economy.
Some of what he says on that list will happen but others are pure fantasy unless China gives them stuff for free.

Economic growth is everything for a country like BD that has kept defence spending constant at 1.5% of GDP pretty much since independence. You think that BD would even be thinking about Western arms if it was not for it's relatively high economic growth over the years? Economy falters and then forget about buying Western arms like Apache, Euro-fighter etc
BD seems to have a state policy(both military government/BNP/AL) to keep defence spending at 1.5% of GDP. BD's "bold decisions" all come from economic growth as you can now see.

Bangladesh should have gone all out for J 10s with ToT, for single engine MRCA platform a long time ago.

J-10 was only really realistic since last year when the Chinese WS-10B engine matured enough to be put into the airplane.
Before then Russia would have needed to have allowed re-export of their AL-31 engine and there was little chance of that when they wanted to sell their planes to BD.
I am also not convinced on the avionics and radar on earlier J-10s either.

To be fair to BAF on the other hand, we needed more trained pilots, so the trainers and the infrastructure like radar coverage of the entire country was necessary. But the progress has been very slow to everyone's liking.

More like lack of integrated long-term plan on their part.

While every other air-force on the planet builds trainers and fighter force simultaneously BAF wants to spend a whole decade buying "stop-gap" F-7s, followed by trainers and then caught with their pants down by Myanmar back in 2017.

Totally incompetent top-brass in BAF and hope the idiots at the top have either changed their ways or been replaced.

Funny GDP boy.
With 70 bn GDP, Myn had managed to acquire a wide range of military hardwares.

16 - Yak 130
20 - Grop TP 120

A number of helos.
Production line for K 8W
Production line for KS 1B Medium Range SAM.
Production line for SA 16 SAM.
Production line for 25 mm AA Cannon.

The Generals can't even take from the economy as their economy is so weak. The UN report I posted a few days ago, says the generals themselves run semi-precious stone mining businesses and finance their military with that. The UN is trying to cut off this business by publicizing the 'blood-diamond' nature of these products.

The UN has by now completely de-legitimized any type of rogue business the Tatmadaw runs. Sanctions are hanging on the head of Minh Aung Lhaing. It is only a question of time before any collaborators like India and China functionaries are openly shamed because of association with these savage generals.

Sorry about the OT foray...

Well from onset, your GDP is not 30% inflated away (BD loves to launder its inflation into GDP and claim USD exchange rate is 100% applicable for all of it laughably when its exports are extremely non-diverse):

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?locations=MM-BD

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.KD?locations=MM-BD

In fact you get a GDP bump in constant to 84 billion vs reduction to 194 billion for BD. This ratio is verified in PPP too (i.e physical distortion from relative inflation + exchange rates removed and look at physical tangible economy only).

Factor in 3+ times more population for BD, its not hard to see how burdened they would be relative to you on the matter.

Set aside from that, what I can see is Bangladesh is not much adamant to build their armed forces and provided sufficient funds for it. Meanwhile building Airforce is the most expensive business for any Armed Forces

Well no one is interested to invade them...thus there is not really an underlying impetus that other countries have more naturally.

They are thus more involved in developing internal security, relevant minimum defenses etc.

Building up offense capability is something else entirely...thus in this forum they will talk a lot on it, but its far more a thought-frontier than the reality that fills up well behind it.
