Sanskrit is not a dead language. Now why would you say that ? It might not be widely popular, but people still learn it and take keen interest in it.

Dead Language is a language which is not used for speaking purpose.just like Latin, its now used for Educational and some Religious purpose.but surprisingly,China found Sanskrit interesting and some Pop Singers use Sanskrit as language for their song.

LOL....if China found sanskrit interesting and pop singers sing in sanskrit, how is it a dead language ?

Besides as long as Hindu scriptures exit, sanskrit will always exist and can never die. Its as simple as that.

Besides Sanskrit is spoken in Mattur and Hosahalli by the locals there.

Idiotic plan.Chinese (mandarin) is one of the most difficult languages to learn in the world,if not the most difficult. Most soldiers of India are usually not very educated and certainly not the brightest of Indians. Most can't even learn the far more simpler languages of NE even after years of posting in a particular place and the Indian bureaucrats are thinking of teaching them mandarin?
Speaks volumes of hare brained idiots in the Indian establishment.

note I didn't use Extinct Language, but Dead Language.Language Death happens when number of speaker of that certain language decreases dramatically.in Modern India,Sanskrit is going through popularisation program.thats why it is used in schools and all.but there is no community who uses this language for speaking purpose.you should read about Language Death.what you might be thinking is Language Extinction, where the language gets lost due to death of last speaker or for other reason.

Not true. It depends on what strata of society you are talking with. With shop keepers it usually hindi. With neighbours its english and at home its the mother tongue. At office its usually English or mother tongue.

There is something called language change. Sanskrit is still spoken in the Indian subcontinent but in its more modern form. Marathi, Malayalam, bengali etc.

The same way "old English" has become english as we know it today. Its not dead, just morphed.

Well this thread died down quick.

But on the plus side, I scrolled down and saw a link under similar threads banner. Chinese PLA girls caught my eye, so later.

actually,no.these are derived languages, just like Vulgar Latin(its the name of old latin) is mother language of Romance Languages, same goes for Sanskrit as well, which is mother language of Indo-Aryan Languages.
