Cairo receives shipment of advanced anti-aircraft missile system from Russia, marking first deployment of long-range interceptor in Middle East.

Egyptian and Russian media outlets have been reporting that an advanced Russian surface-to-air missile system, the S-300, has arrived in the Middle East. The Egyptian military has likely already commenced deployment of the long-range anti-aircraft batteries across the North African country.

The S-300, the Russian version of the American Patriot system, is capable of intercepting aircraft at a range of up to 200 kilometers and a variety of altitudes simultaneously. The reported shipment marks the weapon system's first introduction to a country sharing a border with Israel.

It is unclear whether Israel took a position for or against the Egyptian procurement from Russia and it is possible that Jerusalem abstained from expressing a particular opinion. Nevertheless, the deployment of the advanced S-300 to the Middle East creates a difficult dilemma for the Israeli air force – which will now face an anti-aircraft missile system which covers more of the region than ever before.

Israel and the US pressured the Russian government to cancel its shipment of the surface-to-air missiles to Iran and Syria – even after Moscow signed procurement contracts with the two regional powers – because their deployment would damage Jerusalem's air superiority and the deterrence of the Israeli air force.

Leading defense weekly Jane's reported back in October 2014 that Egypt wanted to purchase a S-300M system (with an operational range of 200 kilometers). The deal was reportedly worth half a billion dollars and agreed upon in an August 2014 meeting between Egyptian President Sisi and Russian President Putin in Sochi.

During that time the US administration had placed an arms embargo on Egypt because of Sisi's treatment of the Muslim Brotherhood. In that period the Americans saw Sisi as responsible for a military coup which overthrew the Brotherhood's elected government.

Russia seized the distancing between the US and Egypt to restore its proximity to Cairo using foreign aid – and to sell its anti-aircraft system while exploring further deals for its warplanes.

The warming relations between the two nations reached their peak when Putin visited Egypt in February, when the purchase of the missile system was finalized and shipments were initiated – in accordance with Egypt's ability to keep up with payments to Moscow.

Meanwhile – and in spite of the financial crisis engulfing Egypt – Cairo also agreed in February a 3 billion euro deal with French manufacturer Dassault for the purchase of 24 Rafale jets. This deal was also spurred by the American embargo following a delay in its supply of F-16 warplanes and Apache helicopters – for which Egypt had already paid in full.

Next year, Cairo will receive the first of two submarines purchased from Germany to replace its aging Chinese-made fleet which was built in the 1970s.

A BS article, if the missile defence was a threat to Israel, the Russians would have never deliver it...If it indeed a threats, then the IDF will destroy it, like they did in Syria, before it reaches the Egyptian shores..

S-300 Russian is Russian version of US patriot??
Like I said above a BS article, the S300 system pre-date the Patriot..and it is far better..

.
I thought the Egyptian economy was still recovering from the "revolutions"? Where are they getting so much money to buy this stuff?

Attacking the missiles means breaking the peace treaty which isn't in israel best interest
also one does not compare the egyptian army to the syrian army massive deference

Truth to be told you wouldn't have lasted this long like they did..From 48 to 73, you still have an empty slate...nothing to show for but left behind boots..

Egypt is a empty can with a few stones which makes noises from time to time. Another impotent system with which to squander money with. 90% of the people get hardly enough to eat and bank coffers are empty. Yet, to keep buying such toys and wear fashion dresses for parades. Most of the soldiers dont even have enough to eat. If you have not been to Egypt, go and see what the reality on the ground is. For a country of this size, they needed to focus on education, health, infrastructure and other development. What do you see, entire complexes which are controlled by the military and it is a parallel economy making food, you name it but all the profit goes to the general pockets and their entire wing staff. Regular people see nothing. After the officers retire, they go over to these parallel industries and living out their 'bonuses' from these sources.
It is a mafia which is feeding off its own people. You expect them to fight? Fight what? They are only looking smart for parades.

IAF is very capable force which can easily neuter the Egyptian Air Force sitting on the ground.

the only part that i agree with you on it is this

For a country of this size, they needed to focus on education, health, infrastructure and other development

and we are working on it now beside upgrading the army

again yes you are right in 30 years we have done nothing to develop our country so you wont see any difference between last year and from 28 years ago , you will probably see the progress 3 years from now a lot of projects are in progress now and others still in plan

.
IAF have enough stand-off missiles to hit sam. You have thing like SEAD, suppression of enemy air defence mission. If we count ther SIGINT what they are good in. In matter of time they wil have a updat of ther jammer against s300. And they will hit you hard.

Ther is somehting like EW electronic warfare and the arabian countries are not familliair with it.

.
This is a defensive weapon. Israel shouldn't be worried if it is not looking to invade Egypt.

.
It is a very deadly missile system. Egypt needs to take measures that a massive pre-emptive strike does not knock them out. As IDF are outnumbered in the region, they follow a strict policy of pre-emptive strikes.

.
As confrontations with Hezbollah and Hamas have shown, Israeli invincibility is a myth. It is high time that they should seek and stop the persecution of the Palestinian people.
