‘That’s how we act’: Netanyahu justifies Syria air raid, vows forceful response to Hezbollah threat
He was referring to the Friday morning raid of the Israeli Air Force, the latest of several reported over the past few years, in which Israel claimed it targeted weapons bound for the Lebanese militant movement Hezbollah. Israel says it has to protect itself from advanced weapons which the militants try to obtain from the Syrian government.

Syria shot surface-to-air S-200 missiles at the Israeli planes as they were flying back from the night mission. Damascus claims it shot down one of the planes, while Israel denies it.

The Israeli media said one of the Syrian missiles was intercepted by Israel’s Arrow air defense system. It was the first time Israel officials have confirmed combat use of the advanced anti-missiles, which are originally meant to intercept heavy long-range ballistic missiles.

The Israeli military is investigating whether the decision to fire Arrow interceptors against the Syrian anti-aircraft missiles was justified, according to Haaretz.

The former prime minister and defense minister, Ehud Barak, said Saturday that the involvement of the system forced Israel to acknowledge cross-border military activity.

“It could be that with more thorough thought, it wasn’t worth firing,” Barak said at a community lecture in Be’er Sheva.

“We have usually tended to reserve what would be called ‘room for denial’ for Syrian President [Bashar] Assad,” he added.

While Israeli acknowledgment of an intervention in Syria is rare, it is not unprecedented. Last April, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed for the first time that an attack on dozens of Hezbollah targets in Syria was indeed conducted by Israeli warplanes, as speculated by the media.

@PaklovesTurkiye bro, may you tell me now, who is fighting Sunni people of Syria ,our Arab brethrens?!
Who is fighting us in Syria?
@Hareeb You too

Israel is hilariously stupid and brazen, they violate Syrian airspace, help Isis by attacking Syrian government forces fighting Isis in Palmyra and then threaten Syria that they will destroy their air defenses if they fire on intruding Israeli aircraft.

.
Next time instead of Buk missile one must use S-300, This move was deliberate by Israel to test the defensive system S-300 and next they will try the F-35 and we might see a launch of Iskander missile system and we will see if Iskander can beat iron dome.

We have armed Syrian army with advanced Fateh-110 missiles and Shahab-2 missiles, they can strike Israel right now...
I hope they do it and we can get rid of that seduction in the region. If Israel invades Syria, Iran will enter the war automatically based on military agreement between two countries. The main problem is the PGCC countries that protect Israel and weaken Syria. A war on Israel means a war with US-PGCC-Israel. It will be a great war if it happens @JOEY TRIBIANI

The Israelis have officially lost the plot.

Only a few hours ago, one of their drones carried out an airstrike on a supposed Hezbollah target in southern Syria, but the airstrike ended up killing an NDF fighter instead:

So not only did the Israelis kill the wrong person, but they also decided to use a drone this time around, presumably because they didn't want to risk having one of their F-16 warplanes shot down by Syria's surface-to-air missiles. (It's very possible that this decision indirectly confirms the rumors that one of Israel's F-16 fighter jets was indeed shot down by the Syrians a few days ago.)

Anyway, the fact is, Israel cannot carry out any airstrike on a Syrian target without Putin and Assad's tacit approval. Prior to last week's embarrassing incident in Palmyra, Moscow and Damascus have almost always turned a blind eye to Israel's occasional airstrikes on Hezbollah warehouses in southern Syria. Israel was able to carry out these airstrikes precisely because the Russian and Syrian government officials were trying to placate Netanyahu and his administration in exchange for Israel's silence over the increased Russian military presence in Syria. In short, there was a tacit understanding between both sides.

Lately, however, Israel has decided to change the rules of engagement by attempting to redraw Putin and Assad's red lines. When the Israeli jets bombed purported Hezbollah targets near Palmyra, the Syrians saw that as a step too far and responded by firing surface-to-air missiles at the Israeli fighter jets for the very first time. This was an indication that neither Moscow nor Damascus gave Israel the green light to hit Hezbollah in that area.

As a result, Israel is now in a predicament. It wants to return to the old rules of engagement with the Russians and Syrians, but it doesn't know how. It has no idea how Syria will respond from now on if any manned Israeli warplane attempts to engage a Hezbollah target in Syrian territory. For these reasons, the Israelis are now trying to test the waters by sending drones over southern Syria.

Neither side wants to escalate or worsen the situation beyond control, so it is very likely that Israel will try to convince the Russians to go back to how things were prior to the Palmyra incident. In the meantime, however, Israel will be very hesitant about sending manned warplanes over Syria territory until it receives renewed tacit assurances that its manned fighter jets won't be shot at. But Israel won't receive new assurances from Assad or Putin unless it gives something in exchange. Will Putin use this as an opportunity to further increase Russia's military presence in Syria and ask Tel Aviv to continue remaining silent about it? Or will Russia tell Israel to accept a Syrian Arab Army presence near the Golan Heights boundary in exchange for renewed assurances from Assad that Israel will be allowed to continue hitting Hezbollah targets in Syria without fearing retaliation? Only time will tell.

Syria used its legitimate right to protect itself and its citizens from israeli air attack. So next time situation would be the same again.Noone will say come and bomb us and kill us slowly fearing from a larger scale threat taunt from another country. Also in case of a full scale attack without Iran interfering both Syria and Labennon can launch devastating missile rocket attacks so it will have very negative consequences for israel as well and everyone knows that. By the way modernized S200 can be effective but Syria needs to complement it by protecting those assets by shorads-vshorads.Also some adequate number of mobile Buks and Syrian S300s need to cover southern direction more where generally attacks come from without leaving north or other directions empty ofcourse.

After going thru Israeli threat and discussions on this thread; it seems that Syrian launched air defence missile badly heart Israelis which are still in denial mode but reaction from them say it all...

Israel and Syria is still at war, so that is not surprising.
