Israel must stop settlements: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia on Monday blamed Israel for obstructing its direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians, saying the Israelis are not ready to stop construction of new Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Council of Ministers, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, urged the United Nations to force Israel to abide by the international law and Security Council Resolutions and restore the usurped rights of the Palestinians.

“International intervention is also required to stop Israel from continuing its settlement activities in the occupied territories seeking to change the status quo,” the Cabinet said, adding that the Israeli settlements would destroy the peace process.

The Cabinet also referred to the various activities that have taken place in the Kingdom over the past week including a conference on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Prophet of Mercy; another on space and aeronautics technology and a third on electronic dealings. A forum for cooperative societies and the weeklong Souk Okaz festival were also held in the past week.

“These events reflect the Kingdom’s desire to achieve excellence in various cultural, social and scientific fields,” said Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja. The Cabinet also commended the agreement signed with Kazakhstan for cooperation in fighting terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking.

Speaking about other decisions taken by the Cabinet, Khoja said it approved an agreement with Yemen for cooperation in civil defense.

The Cabinet approved the memorandum of understanding the Kingdom had signed with Kuwait for cooperation in Islamic and endowment affairs. Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf has been assigned to sign another agreement with Syria for the exchange of expertise in taxation. Al-Assaf will also meet with South Korean officials to sign an MoU on the sound application of customs law and prevent customs violations.

The Cabinet appointed Sultan Al-Yahya as legal expert-A and Muhammad Al-Jarba as legal expert-B at the Council of Ministers; Abdullah Al-Aamir as director of the office of the National Guard’s commander; and Adnan Al-Mandeel and Naif Aboud as ministers plenipotentiary at the Foreign Ministry.
