Is Reverse engineering a Good Option for India?

That is why others won't sell China the latest technology because China can copy and improve upon it.

So what are you going to copy (or "improve") now?

The entire reverse engineering thing would work if it develops in-house capability to finally take over the completed reins of the nation's defence needs ..... BEFORE other traditional suppliers wise-up and stop supplying.

If China is already there ..... great. If not ..... then its a long haul, just like it has been for India.

The advantage India would have would be that it started much earlier and is further along in its programs.

Meanwhile, India still has the luxury of buying what it cannot make .... yet ..... and has the money to pay for it ..... and countries eager to sell.

Which gives us the time we require to become self-reliant .... on our own.

It would be naive of posters here to believe that our own DRDO is re-inventing the wheel completely on all its projects.

All said and done, no matter what the quality and level of sophistication (obsolete tech or not ..... a bullet of the last century can still kill), in addition to cutting edge technology that we buy to maintain an edge over the enemy, it would always be good to develop daal-roti type of mass weaponry like tanks and planes which we can mass produce cheap and in bulk to both inundate the enemy with the weight of numbers (even a tiger will go down under a pack of wild dogs), as well as maintain the potential for quick and seamless rolling stock replacement in the case of a prolonged conflict.

Cheers, Doc

What will China do when they noticed that somebody is reverse engineering the products they sold.

Iran had copied chinese C802, and had it test fired at a Israel stealth frigate.
what will china do?
Sell or smuggle them C803s.

.
my my...i can see a lot of chinese crying over here......coz they dont want india to acuire their only ablity!!!!!!-reverse engineering aka copying.......

by the way i do agree that reverse engineering is no easy task......but i am against it as it would only detoriate the ability to be creative and it would put our engineers skills at research in shambles ........(this is because when you have copied all possible stuff that can be made available clandestinely you have wait for some new stuff to be invented to copy ...rather than inventing the new tech yourself-which actually means you can never be the best and there is always the original manufacturer ahead of you )

India lack technical know how to reverse engineer and improve upon the design. As a result, other countries are willing to sell technology to India knowning well that India is not capable to improving on it. For the next generation of weapons, India would take money that should be spend on its poor and destitute and buy Tot for these weapons. Thus a never ending cycle of wasting money.

Therefore, India should just buy the product and forget about Tot. Why buy Tot if India is not going to improve upon the technology? big waste of money that can go some where else.

China have 50 years of reverse engineering i.e. glorious term for faking/coping because they are world's biggest cheaters.

Get out of ur dreams 50 years ago China was not techonogically advance like it is at present.
Also Chinese manufacturing was nothing at that time they were busy in killing their own chinese people.
:tdown:

The Chinese advancement or expertise in coping comes after 50 years of continues faking.:P

There is no company in the world which have not get revenue losses due to cheap faking by chinese and this is not something to be proud of.:bunny:

And the fact of the matter is the Chinese till date have not produced a single military marble which is not there in the world with US/EU or Russia.

Chill dude.
its not just 50 years of reverse engineering its - 50 years of development- chinese are good because they worked alot on ground level. where india lack such as - Infrastructure. Indian production level can not match china - because its like running blind folded there is no process.

India need to get its infrastructure ready first - why metro cities are developing in India is because of infrastructure development, see what happened to Delhi in past 10 years thanks to planning.

--------

yeh many company are at loss from Chinese product but its not Chinese fault - they can make you product cheaper not good in quality but way too cheap- thats why poor people in india ready to go for Chinese stuff. forgetting quality. china never force them to buy on gun point. its commerce.

---------------

chinese have invented and given way more than - America , Russia combined they have rich history , they lost the plot when they try to escape from their own history , or else there is no culture and country like china.

Yeah right, may i ask you a simple question ? no bullshit, but a

honest answer; After 50 years and still counting, Indians able to make

a damn simple rifle yet ? "Incredible India" HaHaHa

Yet they keep coming back for more.

"with their cheap labour being too attractve to resist"

India has cheaper labor then China, there is more to produce something than just being cheap, take the semi-conductor sector for an example, where labor actually counts very little as production cost.

Still after all the flames, no one seems reply to the question on why Eurocopter continues to produce in China.

However, I'd agree on the notion that basic R&D should be improved. Revise engineering is only a short cut, not a long term solution.

xinhui, no one does anything for free.

The world recognises China as beyond the control of international courts for IP protection etc.

Many many companies have set up shop in China only to wrap up and come home with horror stories about the way things run there.

Once bitten twice shy .... and the word goes around.

So the world recognises that if China has managed to make a copy illegally (and it is to their technical credit that they pull it off .... no two ways about it) there is really nothing much they can do about it except grumble and moan and tighten the screws on future negotiations and through the various myriad webs of international business and finance and politics.

And they obviously look at ways to offset such losses by using China to their advantage ..... while have learned their lessons well in terms of safeguarding their technology.

That is the billions of USD being pumped into China ..... with their cheap labour being too attractve to resist ...... to make something that has either already been copied, or that is no big loss once (and not "if") it is copied ...... with the patent protected shelf life of a product measured in terms of the first batch run ..... with ROI following similar scheduled timelines.

Cheers, Doc

1).INSAS-
2).Excalibur
3).MINSAS
4).INSAS LMG
5).KALANTAK
6).AMOGH
7).MSMC

Are these Enough? But these are not as effective like the one reverse engineered

let's see what the history tells:

copycat of 1800s: USA;
copycat of 1960s: Japan;
copycat of 1980s: Korea;
copycat of 2000s: China;

so, i think it would an honor if India managed to add its name on the list 10 years later.

Is Reverse engineering a Good Option for India ?

Answer= No, not a option at all, because India simply lack the needed technonogy to reverse engineering.

India never reverse engineering any weapon ?

Answer=Wrong=Proof=The Indian armed forces had been equipped with an unlicensed reverse-engineered copy of the famous Belgian FN FAL rifle since the 1950s
INSAS rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :smitten::pakistan::china:

That's a paradox. :hitwall:

Sell or smuggle them C803s.

and yet China continues to sell C-802 to almost everyone in ASEAN. From Thailand, Burma to Indonesia.

The keyword, aftermarket support.

It would be a great honor. And suddenly, all the Indians in this forum that criticizing China for copying would praise India for copying. So its what what a country done, its which country is doing something. Totally biased but everyone can see through.

You can certainly say that about India.

Wait, wait. India is producing a ABM against ICBM even though it doesn't even have any ICBM to test against. The single military marble from India is that it would field an ABM system without first testing it as India knows the parameters of an ICBM so testing is not necessary. Believe me, this are words from Indian members on the India can handle both China/Pakistan simutaneous thread.

The first Indian Workshop on Reverse Engineering (IWRE) organized by Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mumbai and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will be held on 25 Feb. 2010 in Mysore, India.

IWRE provides an international forum for researchers, developers and users interested in Reverse Engineering issues and its applications. Participants will include practitioners and researchers from industry, academia and government. The workshop aims at discussions and active participation which will help evolve the future directions for the field of reverse engineering. The idea of the workshop is to bring together end users, researchers, solution providers together to get an overall understanding of the state of art and where it should be headed.
