With the Indian armed forces in the process of inducting several new aircraft, British manufacturer for ejection seats Martin-Baker Aircraft Ltd has tied up with Mumbai-based Right Choice Aviation (ESSD) Private Limited to help maintain ejection seats installed on military jets in the country.Under the partnership, a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility will be setup along the Mumbai-Pune corridor. Andrew Martin, vice president of business development for the company, said though India was the company’s second largest market after the US, Martin-Baker did not have a formal presence in the country.“The partnership is fairly new,” Martin said. “When the Sea Harriers (Indian Navy) were retired, there was no contact with the Indian Navy but with the arrival of the BAe Hawks, there was a need to re-engage with the Indian Navy. And we always like to find a local partner.” Martin-Baker ejection seats are installed in the Indian Air Force’s Jaguar, Dassault Mirage 2000, HAL’s Tejas, the British Aerospace Hawks with the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy and HAL’s intermediate jet trainer HJT-16. Rafale also uses the Martin-Baker Mk F16F ejection seat. “We are going to be setting up a full-fledged Martin-Baker seat repair service center in the Mumbai-Pune corridor,” said Right Choice Aviation (ESSD) managing director Saumil Paresh Shah. Martin said they would not be manufacturing any ejection seats in India and the partnership was geared towards service level requirements. With ejection seats, the certification process is detailed and almost forensic. If you put anything else on the ejection seat or change any aspect, you can invalidate the certification process,” he said. He added that the re-certification process would be expensive and challenging for the company. Initially, the partnership will focus on providing service support for the ejection seats installed on the Indian Navy’s advanced jet trainer Hawk 132 and will later attempt to service the ejection seats on the Indian Air Force’s Hawk trainers, said Shah.
