But how many? I wasn't aware the IRGC even had any tank forces. When will NEZAJA have them?

Ok! Now we are talking. We will see them in large numbers soon.

Ok! Now we are talking. We will see them in large numbers soo

Though I'm not necessarily being pessimistic, just a statement alone saying we will mass produce this is not cause for celebration. They said the same for the Zulfiqar, and the highest estimate for that is 200 Zulfiqar-1s produced, and that is not large numbers for tanks, especially when we're talking about the quite poor Z-1.

Zolfaqar was not a well established design in my opinion. There were doubts about its capacity in both Army and IRGC. Did IRGC ever express interest in Zulfaqar?

Agreed. But then a Karrar critic would say it's just a modernised T-72 when today there are tanks with unmanned turrets.

Did IRGC ever express interest in Zulfaqar?

If they did, they must have kept it quiet. Everything about the Zulfiqar points to an IRIA project. But what the Sepah wants, it generally gets...

AmirPatriot,

I have serious doubts the Zulfiqar (regardless of variant) EVER made it into production or service except on an evaluation basis.

Logically, IIRC, the IRGC has possession of most of Iran's T-72 inventory. This leaves the IRIA with the surviving Chieftain and Patton tanks (M47/48/60). I always assumed the Zulfiqar was meant to add some fresh armor to the IRIA and let them at least retire the terribly obsolete M47s and M48s.

Instead, we've seen in recent years several attempts at major upgrades to the old Patton tanks, whether it be the Samsam M60 upgrade or the recently redesigned Tiam M47-based design. Work on such upgrades would, at least to me, suggest the Zulfiqar isn't in service at all or at least in VERY limited numbers (dozens?).

IMHO, a dual-production of Karrars for the IRGC and Zulfiqars (with a few pieces of added kit we know Iran has) for the IRIA would be the best of both words, as long as they didn't compete for the same manufacturing/assembly facilities. The Zulfiqar, while not quite as advanced as the Karrar, would still be leaps and bounds superior to anything the IRIA currently has. Maybe in such a scenario, the IRIA can proceed with the Samsam and Tiam upgrades and use the new-built Zulfiqars to phase out the Chieftains, which have seen little in the way of upgrade proposals as of late (besides the handful of re-engined "Mobarez" & some being fitted with improved optics/fire control systems).

But, whether due to limited funds, politics or whatever, the decision not to produce the Zulfiqar after two decades of work may have come down to this:

-Whose armor will be most likely to clash with the armor of Iran's most dangerous enemies?

Almost certainly, the IRGC with their T-72M1/S and now the Karrar, while the IRIA's armor is more focused on the less dangerous regions where upgrade M60s and M47s are adequate for the job.

Me too. I never thought it likely that the IRIA, even in the late 90s, would accept this into service:

Or even this:

I'd rather direct all the military budget towards producing as many Karrars as the MBT requirements both forces have. That way, there is a standardisation of parts and training. Standardisation is something the Iranian military needs, in all departments. When our enemies have M1 Abrams, we should not be sending M47s against them. The Karrar could stand up to it well though, even though personally I think tanks are undergoing a transitional stage where technology like unmanned turrets and APS may make today's generation of tanks - like the M1 Abrams and the T-90 like T-72 modifications - obsolete.

The Abrams tank is not obsolete no matter what people said about it. Just cause you got unmanned turrets, we should considered rest of the turret tanks with crew obsolete? Just because they are in the hull or just few feet lower? That be applying automatic reloading cannon as better than manual loaders even though it doesn't really change anything and hardly different in terms of reload speed. And you can easily put a APS system on the Abrams. The Israeli Merkerva 4 didn't have it when it was recreated long before introducing the Trophy system and now they are installing it on old tanks considered in your eyes obsolete because they are not unmanned turrets.
