Iraqi's Abrams loses to Grenades

A direct RPG-7 shot can knock out an M1 tank. The targeting electronics on the roof is not well protected. A well placed shot would take that out, thus blinding an M1 tank and render it helpless on the battlefield.
So can a 20mm round in the butt end. What's the point in the context of this discussion?

One thing that clearly comes to mind his, when its a controlled , western media and military adventure, the losses and incapability of Abrams, APC, and other military losses are kept ultra secret and minimal to the world.

Well, let's see... One the one hand, why provide your opponent with free intel on their effectiveness? On the other hand, there is plenty of information available online from reporting in the media as well as from official sources.

wow

were you in the toilet when you came up with this idea?
did Iraqis not have any media access or cameras to prove Americans otherwise?

I cant say much about Bradley IFV but Abrams are almost impossible to destroy with anything thats there at the moment.
one on or 2 tanks were damaged during Iraqi invasion and Americans abandoned it and decided to destroy them in order to deny Iraqis any propaganda but they survived and after taking out Iraqi forces Americans were able to repair them and put them back in service very easily.

some kornet ATGMs can easily destroy abrams tanks just like what happened with the merkava in 2006

Over the frontal arc perhaps. However, in built-up areas, there are significant risks of being engaged from sides, top and rear, not to mention bottom ( Their flat bottoms make the Abrams surprisingly vulnerable to improvised explosive devices, sometimes combined with AT mines), and from those angles, Which are much less well protected and more vulnerable.
Hence e.g. Tusk 1 en Tusk 2 packages.

As of March 2005, approximately 80 Abrams tanks shipped back to the United States for repair due to fire from enemy attacks. Damages by 25 mm AP-DU, anti-armor RPG fire and 12.7mm rounds were encountered. On no occasion did ATGWs or AT mines strike the US MBTs. Abandoned Abrams were purposely destroyed by friendly fire to prevent recovery of vehicle or technology. No Abrams crew members were lost to hostile fire during the invasion of Iraq, although several tank crew members were later killed by snipers and roadside bombs during the occupation. Two soldiers were killed and a third wounded, for example, when their tank was disabled by an AT mine combined with other explosives (500 kg (1,100 lb), including several 155 mm rounds) to increase its effect. The massive explosion beneath the tank knocked off the turret...

More:
During an early attack on Baghdad, one M1A1 was disabled by a recoilless rifle round that had penetrated the rear engine housing, and punctured a hole in the right rear fuel cell, causing fuel to leak onto the hot turbine engine. After repeated attempts to extinguish the fire, the decision was made to destroy or remove any sensitive equipment. Oil and .50 caliber rounds were scattered in the interior, the ammunition doors were opened and several thermite grenades ignited inside. Another M1 then fired a HEAT round in order to ensure the destruction of the disabled tank. The tank was completely disabled but still intact. Later, an AGM-65 Maverick and two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles were fired into the tank to finish its destruction. Remarkably, the tank still appeared to be intact from the exterior.[32]

On November 27, 2004, an Abrams tank was badly damaged from the detonation of an extremely powerful improvised explosive device (IED). The IED consisted of three M109A6 155 mm shells, with a total explosive weight of 34.5 kg (76 lb), that detonated next to the tank. The tank's driver received lethal injuries from shrapnel. The other three crew members were able to escape.

On December 25, 2005, another U.S. Army M1A1 was disabled by an explosively formed penetrator IED. The IED penetrated through a road wheel, and hit the fuel tank, which left the tank burning near central Baghdad. One crew member, SPC Sergio Gudino, died in the attack.

On June 4, 2006, two of the four soldiers in an Abrams crew were killed in Baghdad when an IED detonated near their M1A2.

Some Abrams were disabled by Iraqi infantrymen in ambushes employing short-range antitank rockets, such as the Russian RPG-7, during the 2003 invasion. Although the RPG-7 is unable to penetrate the front and sides, the rear and top are vulnerable to this weapon. Frequently the rockets were fired at the tank tracks. Another was put out of action in an incident when fuel stowed in an external rack was struck by heavy machine gun rounds. This started a fire that spread to the engine.[29][33]

There have also been a number of Abrams crewmen killed by sniper fire during times when they were exposed through the turret hatches of their tanks. Some of these attacks were filmed by insurgents for propaganda purposes and spread via the Internet. One of these videos shows a large IED detonating beneath an Abrams and nearly flipping the vehicle, though it landed back on its treads and appeared to have suffered no serious damage as it was still mobile and traversing the turret following the attack. In another video, this one filmed by U.S. Army soldiers, an Abrams was attempting to crush an abandoned vehicle by running over it when a hidden IED inside the vehicle detonated directly beneath the tank, the Abrams again seeming to suffer no significant damage.[34] This video has been removed due to the account on Youtube.com being removed/deleted.

It was reported that 28 Iraqi Army Abrams had been damaged in fighting with militants, five of them suffering full armour penetration when hit by ATGMs, in the period between 1 January and the end of May 2014.[35]

Because of the Abrams vulnerability the Tank Urban Survival Kit, or TUSK, will be issued to some M1 Abrams. It is intended to improve fighting ability in urban environments.

Either way, although the army seeks to end M1 program, it has sufficient political support to survive the budget battles.

great posting there Penguin
in short this tank is a beast
my tribute was an exaggeration but this tank has unrivaled record in recent conflicts.
the experience of the soldiers that drive them is the testament who say they feel safe in it even when their tanks were being hit by RPG which they never wanted but were revealed to see that their armor defeated the rounds fired by insurgents at them.

did you see that picture where ISIS goon is tossing a grenade through the open hatch into the tank? now there is no armor system in the world that can save crew from their own stupidity or bad luck.

maybe the commander was shot and his body fell in the hatch and the ISIS took advantage and finished off with a grenade.

indeed they can with later versions of RPGs.. new weapons are brought up to defeat the latest armors and some succeed. my post was a tribute to that beast and not just based on some desktop analysis but based on the interviews of the American soldiers in the filed that came under fire and overcame the enemy both the Iraqi army and the insurgents.

the subject of the thread was how cheaply a tank was lost to ISIS. maybe I was too rash there. now I think that the hatch was open and the commander was manning his 50. cal or whatever when he got hit by a enemy fire. his body drops in leaving the hatch open and the grenade is tossed to kill the crew.

we never know from the still.s or .. the crew just got too overconfident or lazy and forgot to close the hatch? who knows.

tankers never like to play dare game with the RGPs .. but these tanks withstood the basic and most abundant types of RPG 7s. in one case the RPG hit the top of the tank and destroyed the commander's gun but then the tank took him out along with the building he used to fire at the tank

Both the commander's and the loader's hatches are open. The latter does not have the usual MG mounted on its pintle. Both oddities. I think the photo series is staged on a captured tank.

no matter what name they give themselves TTP, FSA, ISIS or AL qaeda.. they are masters of deception, deceit and lies. using fake footage when ti suits them or when they dont have real prisoners or civilians to behead or shoot.

titled camera footage of Syrian helicopter and then shaking camera violently and showing the road and shouting Allah o Akbar to claim a kill (when it wasnt.. although they did shoot down Syrian copters but that doesnt stop them from adding more Bullshit) using Falujah footage of corpses to claim they were Red Mosque operation victims in Islamabad etc

I dont see a destruction. Looks like blow panels worked fine.

I have read somewhere earlier versions of Abrams were vulnerable at the top. May be these insurgents know this from their experience in Iraq's occupation.
