Iraq--Victory or Defeat for USA ?

Panetta thinks he's winning the war in Afghanistan. He's wrong.

As President Obama saluted American soldiers coming home from Iraq this week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lied through his teeth to troops, insisting that the war in Afghanistan is moving “in the right direction.”
Those were the words that the chief of the Pentagon said on Wednesday from a US base in Pakika province near the Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan. “We're winning this very tough conflict," added Panetta.

On the contrary, NATO statistics reveal that there has been a 21 percent increase in enemy attacks in the eastern portion of Afghanistan alone as of late. Figures from the United Nations also show a peak in violence overseas in 2011.

The US is slated to remove 23,000 of the 91,000 or so troops from Afghanistan by 12 months from now, which while a substantial start to a drawdown, will cause unprotected troops to be more susceptible to enemy attacks.

More than ten years after the US first put boots on the ground in Afghanistan, Panetta told those soldiers that current operations have the American cause moving in the right direction and a victory for the US is imminent. Despite his alleged optimism, that end might not be as near as he leads troops to believe.

The Washington Post reports that one soldier quizzed General Panetta on his statements Wednesday, asking him, “If the Afghan government falls apart after we leave here, are we going to have to come back in 10 years to pick up the pieces?”

“The answer to your question is: We are not going to walk away,” responded Panetta.

"This has been a difficult and complicated relationship as all of you know, but it is an important relationship, and it is one that we have to continue to work at," said the commander.

“My hope is that we maintain a long-term relationship with Afghanistan, that we don’t just simply pick up and get out,” added Panetta on Wednesday. “We spilled too much blood here.”

Only four months earlier, former commander of American troops Stanley McChrystal said that the War on Terror was only “a little better than” half way over.

“We didn't know enough and we still don't know enough," the now-retired general told the Council of Foreign Affairs in Washington back in October.

Two months earlier, August 2011 marked the bloodiest month for US troops since the war began a decade earlier. The tally of troops killed overseas topped off at 66 by the end of the month, just bypassing the previous record of 65 set back in July 2010. So far in this year, 409 Americans have died, marking the second highest tally since the skirmishes started in 2001. With two weeks left in December, only a few dozen more casualties will make 2011 the worst year ever for American soldiers in Afghanistan.

So after 10 years of occupation and a puppet regime in place they have more kia then ever yea thats a funny way of winning i must say

the mission was completed successfully, so yes it was a success.

the usa would of been financially screwed regardless of war or not, if anything the war and all the usa companies contracts etc will help stop usa economics bankrupting, and if it does go bankrupt, will help america rebuild its economy etc.

you cant just think short term, this is a long term thing

that is of course if china and russia dont attack when the usa is at its weakest

.
looking back at history, the iraq war will be the one that will end the american empire.
its economy is on the verge of collapse.

million iraqis dead.

only indians(america's slaves) support such death and destruction.

according to data around 113,755 Iraqis have been killed during the war
not quite a million as many members on this forum continually blurt out!

Iraq Body Count

no worries

well, either way you look at it, many thousands would of died under saddam anyway, majority of population wanted saddam gone, no longer is a minority in charge of the majority!. sure the usa started the war based on lies, it was a strategic war that may even yet blow up in their faces lol

i spose one could say, iraq is now a better place, but it always comes down to one perception.

the iraqi people dont seem to be complaining that saddam is gone and a democratic government installed.. corrupt it be or not lol.

let's see
hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead;
5000 Americans + tens of thousands injured;
Iraq went from being anti Iran to Iran's biggest ally, even bigger than syria;
Trade between iran and iraq went from zero to tens of billions;
Stronger Iran;
More hatred for the US among Iraqis and the rest of the Arabs;
1.5 trillion that you will never get back;
USA bankrupt;
99 percent debt to GDP ratio as a result;
Iraq's entire infrastructure destroyed;
Living conditions are worse a decade after the war started;
Iraq is now a sectarian hell hole;
Christians in Iraq are all gone, they are literally extinct and will never return;
Women have it worse today than they did before;
Minorities are worse off today than in the past;
...

Victory indeed
idiots

more (from a Lebanese forum):

1-One million dead Iraqis
2- A blatant Shiite-Sunni conflict that will define the region for the enxt 500 years and cause it enormous destruction and countless dead so the Americans may recoup the cost of their Iraqi folly through arm sales remittances.
3- A totally decimated Christian population that has no hope ever of returning to that wretched country and is well advised to consider leaving the whole of the Middle east if it knows what is good for it.
4- 1.5 trillion dollars debt for the American tax payers most of it landing in the pockets of the arms manufacturers
5- A destroyed country which will take about 200 years to go back to where it was
6- A fertile ground to engage the Gods in bloody sectarian wars until hell freezes over
7- A world economy in tatters
8- Oil prices 3 times the level they were before the invasion
9- A fundamentalist genie out of the bottle and ready to slit the throat of anyone who disagrees with its version of this world and the one after
10 - A democratic country so people will always have reasons to kill each other
11-4000 plus dead American soldiers and tens of thousands of wounded soldiers all wondering what for?

Strange how military victories often end up being moral defeats. So now hopefully american historians will go over that period and judge it for the disaster it has been. As for the arab ones ,they can just count the number of dead of their sectarian opponents and relish the thought.
