they didn't in iran-iraq war either that's why they are badass.:D:D
also in many cases US special forces didn't use body armours, neither in iraq nor afghanistan.

fighting in desert area, a helmet is much more essential then body armor, the armor will add additional weight which will just suck ur energy away and there is a very low possibility of close combat...

they have body armour and helmets but usually there is no need to use them especially in recon and infiltration missions.
