We need to see this bad boy tested. What a monster this is. The first stage solid fuel engine alone is 3.5 meters in diameter and 20 meters high :cheesy: And it is a 4 stage SLV, so one can imagine its full size.

Here are my photogrammetric analysis on a 40 meters length, 4 stages solid propellant SLV/ICBM with ~4 meters diameter first stage.
The thrust might exceed the 1,000 tons force and the payload capability ~ 20 tons in LEO. This in correlation with hints from North Korea.

Photogrammetric measurements of a booster's first stage or second stage black solid propellant section indicate a ~3 meters maximum diameter, and a ~1 meter inner diameter.
This larger stage might be assembled from ~6 of these sections (~6 visible on the image).
Two ~3 meters cylinders of obviously even greater length (as indicated by the shadow) are also visible just 80 meters south at the entrance of another bulding.
Smaller stage of ~2 meters are also visible.
This smaller stage might be assembled from ~5 of these sections.

Agreed! But The point is: does Iran want to give up its progress on nuclear technology and missiles for the sake of economical growth? This seems to be what the west is pressing Iran for while Iran thinks it can achieve both given time.

If the above is true, it means the economy is adjusting itself to the new status quo and sanctions. We should wait and see. Probably the same will appear in Russian economy. Putin predicted their economy will bounce back within 2 years.

Its not about progress in nuclear and missile technology its about independence and sovereignty which allow progress in all fields. West wants slaves not free nations and in return you can go after collecting paper as much as you wish, and you can boast how our economy is booming with pixel figures!

Summary

During the reporting period, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea continued to enhance its nuclear and missile programmes, although it did not conduct a nuclear test or intercontinental ballistic missile launch. Missile launches in May and July of 2019 enhanced its overall ballistic missile capabilities.

Annex 32: Strengthening the ballistic programme’s capacity

1.According to one Member State the DPRK is actively engaged in indigenous R&D and the production of missiles with solid propellant, inter alia at the industrial complex of Hamhung.
According to another Member State, there is a clear development progression from propellant for artillery rockets/SRBMs to solid propellant for ICBMs (see section 4 of this annex).

Figure I shows two similar distinctive white containers (11m x 2.40m) moving in two different areas of the Hamhung-Hungnam industrial complex. The first container moved from the location 39°49'11.81"N 127°35'17.93"E, 400m from the solid fuel propellant production facility of the Hungnam 17 Factory (39°49'27.00"N 127°35'13.55"E), as observed during the following dates in 2019: 20 February, 25 February, 1 March, 4 March, 25 March, 26 March and 3 April.

The second white container moved from location 39° 57′ 27′′ N 127° 33′ 37′′ E, at the new production area of the Chemical Material Institute CMI (production of missile casing), as observed during the following dates in 2018: 29 July, 18 August (1h56; 4h50) and 15 September. This type of white containers (11m x 2.40m) could transport rocket motor casings (wound from composite fibers).

4. The DPRK’s BM programme is comprehensive and autonomous. Systems integration and internal synergies ensure that developments on the SRBM programme benefit MRBM/IRBM and ICBM programmes. With regard to missile engine development, according to one Member State, the DPRK’s current goal appears to be to develop a solid-fueled first stage for its ICBM. Another Member State observed the deployment of solid fueled missiles Pukkuksong-2 (KN-15) MRBM in the missile bases close to the northern border where the liquid fueled missile Nodong also remained deployed.

Maybe NK can give Iran some help on how to put a satellite >50kg into space too.

Two failed launches (2009 + 2012) then they put a 100kg sat into LEO in 2012 and a 200kg sat into LEO in the very next launch in 2016.

Iran's space programme is a bad joke in comparison. Even if by some miracle the next Simorgh launch succeeds in putting a 100kg satellite into LEO a new SLV would still be needed to put a 200kg sat into LEO to catch up with what NK achieved in 2016.

Iran isn't test-firing any top-quality, effective, long-range ICBM armed with MIRVs for next 15 years atleast...

Then, as for an ICBM two possibilities:

• 1. The ~2 meters diameters Pukguksong-4 ICBM as an incremental step follow-up to the solid propellant Pukguksong-3 SLBM of ~1.4 meters diameters.
If the first stage is of ~4 meters length, the thrust should reach the ~30 ton-force.
By doubling the length to ~8 meters, the thrust could reach ~100 ton-force.
But we know from Iran that the length of Qaem 2nd stage should even exceed the 11 meters!


Size of the Qaem rocket as per official drawings:

• Qaem SLV first stage is 3.5 meter diameter
• 2nd stage is 2 meter in diameter
• 3rd stage is 1.7 meters in diameter
• 4th stage is 1.25 meters diameter

Meanwhile first photogrammetric measurement of the Pukguksong-4A suggest a 1.8m diameter and a length of about 9.8m, based on the Howo A7 tractor's wheel base as a baseline. Obviously, the range is above 5'000 km according to Japanese media.

3. First photogrammetric measurement of the Pukguksong-4A indicates that the diameter is slightly bigger than a standing KPA soldier of ~1.70 meters.


While other OSINT analysts have measured a 2 meters diameter.

Some have also pointed out that the cable raceway missing from the paraded model could indicate a total engine length of more than 10 meters!

In conclusion this is the successor of the decade-old QAEM second stage, but with composite Kevlar Aramid wound filament airframe unlike the metal-frame Qaem. From now on, consider the Qaem program dead.

Iran will automatically switch to an all composite casing too.


This booster alone is in the class of the DF-31 ICBM first stage or CZ-11 SLV first stage.

If they have now a solid fuel PK-4 ICBM, then the most likely helper is Iran.
Irans solid fuel tech. is ahead of North Koreas, with all respect for their Juche ideology.

Its possible that NK's R&D program is just not visible or very small and there is no contribution from Iran.

Is it only me or it seems that some here really act as if they were on the wikipedia pages:

Dude, all your questions have been answered last years in this same thread.

Not allowed to repost the deleted content, I will only state that in aerospace, North Korea is in no way backward, at the exception of only one field: the manned space program.

Indeed, this is really more about prestige, with less military applications, and by far the most costly.

Therefore, Iran will probably do most of the development by its own, and only transfert the finished hardware to North Korea for the final testing phase: the manned capsule E1, the Iranian version of the Sokol spacesuit, the space food.

• It is obvious that North Korea has dedicated military-industrial complex to develop solid propellant technologies: the entire greater region around Hamhung, from start to finish. It includes the static horizontal and vertical pop-up test stands, and extends to 55 km northeastward to the Sinpo region were submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) are tested.

• Unlike Iran, the North Korean horizontal static test stand does not give a clue to the foreign satellites, with no traces left on the ground by the plume. Indeed, Iran's Shahroud is build on desertic soil, thus compromising its secrecy, while Hamhung's plume goes over a river!

• The grain's quality has been improved steadily over the years and is far more advanced than in Iran.

• The North Korean casings are made of composite aramid fiber for all Pukguksong series engines ranging from 1.1 meters diameter to 2 meters diameter, while Iran is mostly using alloy steel such as the 1.25 meter diameter Sejil, with only the exception of the relatively small 0.9 meter diameter Salman motor, and only as second stage of the Qased rocket.

• For the moment, the only solid propellant motors technology that Iran has demonstrated before North Korea is TVC, but only for the relatively small 0.9 meter diameter Salman-1 used as second stage of the Qased SLV.

• North Korea has casting pit for solid motors of 4 meters diameters:

Satellite imagery of the 'Place of the ascension of Martyrs’ (35.624581°N 50.872523°E) at the Shahid Modarres Garrison shows that before the 12 November 2011 explosion, the site was housing a rail-movable hangar, cranes and large cylindrical objects.

The epicenter of the 2011 explosion might be a large casting pit with a moveable superstructure.

The measured diameter of the casting pit is about 5 meters, and can be used to cast rocket motors of diameters up to 3.5 meters for the Qaem SLV.

The measured diameter of the casting pit of about 5 meters, and is used to cast the 3.5 meter diameter Qaem SLV first stage.

Recent satellite imagery of 5th Febryary 2018 have revealed a similar site in North Korea’s Chemical Materials Institute, a key facility for the production of solid-rocket motors.

July 25, 2018

This imagery shows some unique features that appear to be related to testing or finishing solid motor case production. Among these is a circular foundation in the southern fabrication building that measures (approximately 4 meters-in-diameter, interior dimension) and surrounds an excavation of undetermined depth.

The intended purpose of this excavation is unclear. One suggested purpose would be to fulfill a requirement for pressure testing, degreasing, or coating filament-wound rocket motor casings prior to being filled.[6] Alternately, if this pit is intended for hydro-pressure testing—during which the pressure is slowly increased until the case fails—it would require a dome or heavy lid to keep it sealed during testing.

• The vintage Russian cold war era R-27 technology is not worth being further developed. And totally obsolete compared to the Paektusan series engine, that allows single chamber engine fully gimballed up to possibly ~150 tons of thrust. Here the clarification.


Flight evidence and age seem to indicate that those engines aren’t reliable enough anymore.

Given unreliability, a two engine installation is n^2 more likely to have a flight failure. 70% reliable per engine is 0.7^2 ~= 0.49 probability of flight success. 60%reliable is 0.36 probability of flight success. We don’t know everything about 4D10 Zyb engines failures but by far most of the 4D10 Zyb engines failed. Some very low or on launchers, mostly at altitude. The latter ones grew grid fins arguably for transonic stabilizing margins. But there were failures after that, credibly of engines.

So we have two known (or very high credibility based on evidence) failure modes; engines and aerodynamic. It looks like engine reliability was in 60-70% range. The Hwasong-13 ICBM just stopped being viable with that rate.

And importantly, North Korea almost immediately went to public testing of the Paektusan engine (RD-250 lineage cousin). That’s likely an admission that they knew they needed new motors and demonstration that they could do that and make it work.

They’re remarkably open with sharing for deterrent credibility.

4D10 is a work of art. But perhaps not best starter high performance liquid fuel motor.

RD-250 is a straight forward design compared to the tank integrated, space restricted, closed combustion cycle, counter-cavitation gas to tank re-pressuring, R-27 design.

A high risk tech. path for a first ICBM.

Iran concentrated on it, and finally mastered it, but it took time.

Is it only me or it seems that some here really act as if they were on the wikipedia pages:

1. Delete all sources that substantiates the contributor's edit. Use the lack of credibility of the source as an excuse.

2. Delete everything else the contributor has posted under the pretence of missing sources, as it is compromising the official wikipedia's line.

Not allowed to repost the deleted content, I will only state that in aerospace, North Korea is in no way backward, at the exception of only one field: the manned space program.

Indeed, this is really more about prestige, with less military applications, and by far the most costly.

Therefore, Iran will probably do most of the development by its own, and only transfert the finished hardware to North Korea for the final testing phase: the manned capsule E1, the Iranian version of the Sokol spacesuit, the space food.

• It is obvious that North Korea has dedicated military-industrial complex to develop solid propellant technologies: the entire greater region around Hamhung, from start to finish. It includes the static horizontal and vertical pop-up test stands, and extends to 55 km northeastward to the Sinpo region were submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) are tested.

• The grain's quality has been improved steadily over the years and is far more advanced than in Iran. The casing are made of composite aramid fiber, while Iran is only known to produce carbon fibers.

Satellite imagery of the 'Place of the ascension of Martyrs’ (35.624581°N 50.872523°E) at the Shahid Modarres Garrison shows that before the 12 November 2011 explosion, the site was housing a rail-movable hangar, cranes and large cylindrical objects.

The epicenter of the 2011 explosion might be a large casting pit with a moveable superstructure.

The measured diameter of the casting pit is about 5 meters, and can be used to cast rocket motors of diameters up to 3.5 meters for the Qaem SLV.

Recent satellite imagery of 5th Febryary 2018 have revealed a similar site in North Korea’s Chemical Materials Institute, a key facility for the production of solid-rocket motors.

Among these is a circular foundation in the southern fabrication building that measures (approximately 4 meters-in-diameter, interior dimension) and surrounds an excavation of undetermined depth.​
The intended purpose of this excavation is unclear. One suggested purpose would be to fulfill a requirement for pressure testing, degreasing, or coating filament-wound rocket motor casings prior to being filled.[6] Alternately, if this pit is intended for hydro-pressure testing—during which the pressure is slowly increased until the case fails—it would require a dome or heavy lid to keep it sealed during testing.​

You showed it yourself: You have found one NK facility under construction in 2018 that could be for solid fuel missile and motor casting.

No prolonged test campaign or years old finished facilities of large scale.

I'm not ranting here, if you know any test and production related infrastructures for solid fuel motors in NK, please post them.

For now it appears that all R&D and testing is done in Iran, delivered to NK and re-engineered there (Juche).

I doubt Chinese would transfer anything critical on solids to NK

Btw: Carbon fiber casings perform better than aramid.

OSINT made it public to the world and we would expect OSINT to search NK for a similar facility.

To make it simple: I dont see the R&D footprint necessary to develop something like the PK-4 on its own.

Either R&D is done jointly in Iran, or the developed product is transferred to NK or NK gets the product from China.

Look no further. It is no secret that Russia is a fallen power that is totally dependent from others for rare earth minerals, critical to the defence, telecommunications and renewable energy sectors.

But cash strapped it can't even pay for the import from China, that totally dominates this sector.

Therefore Russia seeks its survival by barting anything valuable such as Soviet era vintage military tech including WMDs, for the most needed critical North Korean rare earth minerals.

This is even made easier as both nations share 18 km of terrestrial border, and a vast common maritime area were any transaction can be made at sea.

• R-250 engine
• R-16 ICBM
• 9K720 Iskander SRBM
• Various associated TEL
• S-300 SAM
• S-400 Triumf SAM
• 9K330 Tor SAM
• T-14 Armata MBT

All weapon systems proven to have appeared over the recent years in North Korea!
