following Irans Navy is difficult with so many variations of equipment

hope they can standardised some of the platforms and mass produce them as mature platforms

but then again the confusion maybe be deliberate to confuse the enemy

A long story
Not only the navy but all branches, a lot of same names, this is very prominent in Navy, air force and aerospace force, some names are even alluding to more than 3-4 different weapons at once

Maybe it is already standardized within the army members

AIP not needed for such a sub. Its endurance is ~30 days which is plenty for a submarine that is restricted to PG & Arabian Sea.
AIP on Fateh sub is likely a testbed for larger navy projects like the Besat. The system can develop and mature along the way before serial production of larger vessels.

meanwhile, North Korea has installed cruise missiles, Khwasal-1 or Khwasal-2, on board an Amnok-class light frigate, and not the North Korean version of the Kh-35, as previously assumed.

observing the characteristics of the superstructure it is possible to hypothesize the presence on board of at least 4 cruise missiles.

Some hints between Amnok class and Damavand II frigate;

1º.- Amnok have machinery exhaust gases just over waterline. That makes very IR signature much lower in the NK frigate. (+1 point)

2º.- Amnok have a MR123 radar (IR channel too¿?), what gives to the frigate a real all weather CIWS capability to their AK630. (+1 point).

3º.- Damavand II has a phased array radar system making her capable of real Air search command and control. Amnok seems to be equipped with a MR 362 radar in X band which has much less detection range. (+1 point).

4º.- Damavand II can presumably launch much longer range Mersad 16 missiles (not VLS evidence until now) like Sahand frigate than Igla SHORAD aboard Amnok (+1 point).

5º.- Amnok have a much more powerful 100mm gun, but lighter Fajr-27 gun is automatic and have rapid fire mode and Damavand II has a IR/EO/TV/LR sensor dedicated to it, giving more precise and rapid fire capability (= points).

6º.- Amnok has long range cruise missiles but Damavand II would be fitted in near future with same type of missiles. None of the ships can have autonomous target designation over the horizon (Mineral ME type or MR 366 radar) to give real OTH targetting, so the use of this kind of missiles is just limited to inshore static targets mostly. (= points).

7º.- Damavand II frigate has helipad, while Amnok hasn´t. That gives Damavand II special ops deployment and more autonomy in high seas (VERTREP and repairing in high seas). (+1 point).

So, just IMHO; 2 points to Amnok and 3 to Damavand.

Please guess with kind of frigate could be built if the knowledge of both navies would be shared. Damavand with a real CIWS and reduced IR signature while NK could have a much more multipurpose frigate with some real AAW capability.

Besat would be the last Iranian sub to benefit from AIP.

Anything bigger the Besat aka a blue water submarine needs to either use a nuclear reactor or use nuclear fuel for true endurance and 2nd strike capability (wether conventional, biological, or thermonuclear).

These aircraft carriers and drone carriers alleges they want to build need to be protected by nuclear fueled subs. Low endurance subs cannot stay alongside them without resurfacing periodically which gives always their position to the other enemy submarine or intelligence agencies.


Nice to see more Ghadir sub. After building a lot of them, production slowed to just a few delivered in the last years IIRC.

I assume the earliest ones built need to be retired or overhauled by now.

Probably one of the best concepts for an aip system was the italian Gaseous Oxygen stored in the Toroidal pressure hull (GST),this had the potential to be pretty revolutionary,but sadly came along right at the end of the cold war.

We can see some obvious modifications between the older and newer zolfaghars,is this just for the nasir equipped versions?

These speedboats can have “mini cwis” like turrets installed on their bow and port. Instead they still rock the same manual heavy machine gun.

So bizarre.

That would undermine the "cheap and plentiful" aspect which is the whole point of this strategy

doubtful it’s a cost issue. It’s 2023, an automated turret will not break the bank.

Especially when you are rocking Yamaha 250’s on the back of the speedboats that each cost $20K+ or in case of Zolfighar it is supposedly powered by two 1000-1200hp diesel engines, if it true the cost of those is easily $25K+
