Iran says soldier shot dead by Azeri border guard

TEHRAN, Oct 20 (Reuters) - An Iranian soldier was shot dead when he strayed across the border into Azerbaijan, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Thursday.

"An unarmed Ardebil province border guard entered Azerbaijani territory by mistake was martyred by that country's border guards," Mehr quoted Colonel Mojtaba Mousavi, commander of the Iranian border guard in the area, as saying.

"This measure by Azerbaijan border guards was illegal and cowardly."

The shooting happened on Wednesday morning and Azeri authorities still had not returned the soldier's body, the report said.

A similar incident occurred in early July when an Azerbaijani border guard who crossed into Iran was killed in a clash with Iranian guards.

Iran said at the time it was not uncommon for border guards to cross the unmarked frontiers, but the soldier had ignored orders to halt.

well, talking about bombing them makes Iran look bullying and naive. We can't and don't need to bomb the republic of Azerbaijan for the mistake they've committed but Azerbaijan must know that it should think twice before it kills Iran's border guards because they are signaling the wrong message to Iran. if they want to have peace with their neighbors, and definitely they need peace with their neighbors to grow economically, then they should behave in a responsible way toward their neighbors. Iran is not Armenia, they should keep that in mind. I understand why Azerbaijan is behaving that way though! I believe it was more like a retaliation for the Azerbaijani border guard killed by Iranian forces months ago but it signals the wrong message unfortunately.

I mean no offense to our Turkish brothers but You talk about Turkey like it's the USA! I'm sure you know that Iran and Turkey have their own disagreements and it has become clearer since the anti-Assad protests in Syria, but if we feel that the republic of Azerbaijan is a threat to us, we'll use our levers against them. That doesn't mean we're going to bomb them or launch a military offense against them but it means we're going to use our non-military levers against them. Turkey is free to play any role it likes to play in that circumstance. I should add that I have nothing against Azerbaijan, but they need to act in a more responsible way toward their neighbors.

Don't forget that 30% of Iran are ethnic Azeris, Iran can turn into Southern Azerbaijan at any moment. Most of ruling dynasties in Iran for the past 1000 years were Azeri Turks, and be aware, it could be again the case.

well, at best 20% of Iranians are Azeris. and out of this 20%, 90% of them are pro-Iran. in fact what you're saying can be seen this way: republic of Azerbaijan can turn into Northern Azerbaijan province of Iran in a blink!

I won't take your words seriously, you want to know why? It's easy, you've been proved to be incapable of taking Karabakh back. Seljuqs, Ildenizids, Ilkhanate, Qara-Qoyunlu, Aq-Qoyunlu, Safavids, Qajars. That is 7 Azerbaijani or related dynasties that have ruled Iran since 1000s! Untill Pahlavi family.

What a Bunch of Bollocks!, I Never had anything against iran but lately They are acting like Moron if you ask me. You Talk About non-Military solution yet you are the ones that send Snipers to Syria so they could help Killing innocent civils who just want more rights and freedomm, And Wherent you the ones that killed the Azeri Guards last time?.
