Iran produces some of the smartest and top computer scientists in the world - Google CEO

Russians, Indians, Chinese & Iranians are among the top best educated immigrants in the U.S. and at the end of the day they are what allows the U.S. to remain the most advanced country in the world

Top scientist from all those countries work at NASA, JPL(Jet propulsion laboratories), are researchers at many top universities & work in R&D in various fortune 500 companies!

The reason Google's CEO talks about Iranian immigrants is because he understands the value of human resources and clearly wants to counteract Trumps idiocy! When Google CEO comes and talks about Iranians computer scientist he is basically inviting top Iranian engineers to come and work for google! It's smart and that's why he makes the big bucks! One tweet goes viral that's millions of dollars in advertising & recruiting with a simple tweet!
I was randomly browsing some YT videos and came across Apple's preparations during the iphone X launch in their stores. Just look at the # of asians, Indians in particular in Apple's war room the day prior to it's launch along with Apple's head of retail Angela Ahrendts. I'm pretty sure top US firms would be doomed without Asians

There are over 400 contemporary Iranian scientists and engineers that have taught at prestigious universities, contributed by advancement in their respective fields, and either are running companies or have in the past at top positions.

Show me one Turk, Pakistani, or Arab that can hold a candle to Dr. Firouz Naderi, as a matter of fact show us a list of Arabs or Turks currently or in the most recent times that have led NASA.

so you managed to pull a few names from the employee list of iranian origin, which is expected, the "top" engineers/scientists are still of other nationalities etc

an arab has led the JPL, there are many indians, chinese and jews that dwarf the achievements of firouz naderi

These are just a few that I mentioned. These are not Iranian names , they are IRANIAN.

Well the article does not Arab engineers are the best does it? it does not. Does it say Chinese? No it does not. Does it say Jewish engineers are the best ? No it does not.

Why do not you enlighten us and tell who is this Arab or Arab speaking scientist that is running JPL.

I never meant to say that all the top researchers in US are only from Iran. There are plenty of Chinese and Indian engineers that have contributed in their respective fields. There are 700,000 Iranians in the US of which 25% hold a doctorate degree or higher. Compared with Indians , standing at 2,000,000 and the Chinese which are even more, Iranians out number them with advanced degrees both in nominals numbers and as percentage of the total population abroad.

Iranian-Americans at the Forefront of Success
09/07/2017 04:48 pm ET Updated Sep 09, 2017

  • After a nine-week hunt for a CEO, Uber announced the appointment of Iranian-American, Dara Khosrowshahi, a former executive at Expedia where he had the distinction of being the highest paid CEO in the US. Honoring a long-held family tradition of valuing education above all else, he earned a B.A. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University.

Khosrawshahi is among a long list of Iranian CEOs and successful Iranian-Americans whose remarkable achievements are recognized internationally. His own family is an incubator of sorts for high achievers, as many of Khosrowshahi’s family members are Silicon Valley executives and investors.

Khosrawshahi is certainly not the exception when it comes to Iranian-Americans achieving success. A report by the Iranian Studies Group at MIT reveals that per capita average income for Iranian-Americans is 50% higher than that of the rest of the nation. Iranian-Americans living in homes valued at over $1 Million exceeds the national average by ten times.

The list of Iranians in high-powered tech positions is extensive, some examples of which include Shervin Pishevar, co-founder of Sherpa Capital, Pierre Omidyar, founder of Ebay, and Sean Rad & Justin Mateen, co-founders of Tinder.

Iranian-Americans have also attained top positions in financial markets. One example is Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, a rare woman in the male-dominated field of finance, serving as the CIO of Private Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs.

The list of Iranian-American physicians, scientists and academics is extensive, with one example being the late Maryam Mirzhakhani, who received the Fields Medal in 2014, the highest honor in Mathematics.

Most Iranian immigrants did not have access to capital when they first arrived in the U.S. in the late 70s and early 80s, so what is it that makes this relatively small group of immigrants so financially successful?

The answer is: Education. Education has always been a pillar of Iranian culture, both in Iran and within the Iranian immigrant population. Statistically, Iranians are the most highly educated immigrant group in the United States. They tend to excel in math and the sciences, fields in which American students typically struggle.

Some 57% of Iranian Americans hold a bachelors degree, compared to 24% of the US population, and the percentage of Iranians who hold graduate degrees is three times the national average. One can easily see how a vast playing field of opportunities becomes available to those who are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to compete in various industries.

I had the pleasure of catching up with David Nazarian, an Iranian-born businessman and founder of Nimes Capital. Like many fellow Iranian-Americans, Nazarian believes education is the leading factor in achieving success within any culture or community.

“We have been taught as immigrants that the only asset that no one can take away from you is education. From early on, Iranian families have ingrained this value in their kids.”

Nazarian’s commitment to helping provide all students access to an excellent education, regardless of background and financial standing, inspired a charitable contribution to The CSUN school of Business and Economics, which is now named The David Nazarian College of Business and Economics in his honor.

“I want to make sure that all underprivileged communities have equal opportunities for quality education so that they have the right access to pursue their professional aspirations”. Says Nazarian.

Like Nazarian, most Iranians place tremendous value on education, helping others achieve career success. Consequently, a significant number of Iranians have contributed to the education systems here in the US. A few other examples include the Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine, which is named in Paul Merage’s honor after a substantial donation.

Another example is Hadi and Ali Partovi, who co-founded code.org, a non-profit organization that provides computer science education to 20% of US students.

At a time when immigrant populations are being marginalized in the US, the Iranian-American community is a notable example of how immigrant populations with access to education can truly create a better life for themselves and the society they in which they live.

While I definitely agree that there are considerable # of Iranians in top-notch positions, the reason Iranians have a higher # of doctoral degrees when compared to Indians or Chinese as a % of population is Iranians only tend to get a 2 year visa for their masters education while Indians or Chinese get a 5 year visa which includes 2 years of masters and 3 years of OPT work period.

Iranians need to find a job before their 2 year visa expires which maybe tough for an average student and most of them tend to go for doctoral degrees to extend their stay in the US and simultaneously try to fetch a job while Indians/Chinese with 5 yr visas can use their OPT work period without fearing visa expiration

LOL! You think this is some kind of new development?

And that was from 2000 Census! Iran has been THE fastest growing country in Science & Technology for years now!
All you have to do is google "Fastest Growing Country in Science & Technology"

And the discussion is about scientists & engineers at the end of the day scientist don't make good CEO'S & Executives!
Einstein was a genius but when it came to managing even his own personal finances he had no clue!

Saudi Arabia has had a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for years now! SO WHAT? At the end of the day everyone know that seat was purchased!
Or else putting Saudi Arabia a dictatorial monarchy that cuts off heads in the middle of squares, is just celebrating allowing women to "DRIVE", whos crown prince is going around assassinating & arresting his own family members... For them to have a seat at the UNHRC is like asking the Mexican Cartel to lead the war against drugs & entrusting them to teach your kids not to do drugs!
Just today they assassinated the former Saudi Crown prince! LOL! And these are the filth that have a seat at the UNHRC! LOL!

And being Arab at the end of the day is NOT a culture or ethnicity it is NOTHING more than a language!
Saudi Culture is NOTHING like Syrian culture! Your generalizing people whos only similarity is that they speak the same language! If you read history you'll see that Iran almost lost it's language to the Arabic Language too & if it had the culture or ethnicity would still not be the same just because they speak the same language!

Today immigrants from Russians, India, China, Iran,... are leading the scientific community in the U.S. at the highest levels and that is an undeniable FACT!
