Iran potentially open to resuming ties with US | News.com.au
IRAN is potentially open to resuming diplomatic ties with the US but only on an equal footing, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said today.
"The kind of relations that Washington wants to pursue with Tehran is similar to the one that the wolf wants to have with [the] lamb, which is rejected by the Islamic Republic of Iran," Salehi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
He added, "We have not ruled out establishing relations with other countries, barring the Zionist regime [Israel], but it is possible that our relations are in an unusual situation with countries like the US. If one day the US agrees to a dialogue on an equal footing and without preconditions, while respecting the rights of our people, the situation will be different."
Iran and the US have not had diplomatic ties for more than three decades. In recent years, the freeze deepened amid Iran's push for nuclear weapons, its support for Islamist insurgents and attempts to counter US policy in the Middle East.
