Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said that building submarines equipped with nuclear propulsion systems is on the country’s agenda. The two branches of Iran’s Navy, the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy, include 34 submarines.

“It’s a kind of negligence if the Islamic Republic does not think about using nuclear propulsion in submarines … this domestic capability exists in the Defense Ministry regarding the production of submarines bigger than Fateh and certainly, the developing of submarine propulsion is on the agenda of the Navy,” Rear Admiral Khanzadi said.

The stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards nuclear energy is clear and defined and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution has many times highlighted its peaceful nature, he added.

All the country’s organizations are moving in the defined framework regarding the nuclear program, Rear Admiral Khanzadi said, adding, “None of the international pacts ban using peaceful nuclear energy but the peace we are talking about doesn’t find meaning without maintaining defense readiness.”

“When there is no deterrence and readiness for a defense, no peace and stability will be established and so the Armed Forces of the country are present to ensure sustainable peace,” he added.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi announced last year that his country had made good progress in manufacturing nuclear propulsion systems used in ships and submarines.

Nuclear propulsion uses a nuclear power reactor to generate electricity on a vessel. Such systems are best known for their use on strategic nuclear submarines, which allow them to stay submerged for weeks avoiding detection. Nuclear propulsion is also used on some big surface ships like aircraft carriers or icebreakers.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in 2016 ordered the country's nuclear agency to start plans to produce nuclear fuel and propulsion systems for ships and submarines in response to the violation of the 2015 nuclear deal by Washington.

Currently, Iranian Naval forces don't have nuclear-powered attack submarines. From 1992 to 1996, Iran commissioned the three Kilo-class (called Tareq-class in Iran) diesel-electric submarines from Russia. In 2007, Iran began deployments of small Ghadir-class and Nahang-class mini-submarines for use in shallow coastal waters. Reports on the number of operating Ghadir-class submarines range from 10 to 21, but in 2017, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence estimated that Iran possessed 14 of such submarines.

Perhaps they should team up with Pakistan to build such nuke subs, it makes sense to distribute manufacturing to multiple countries.

Will Pakistani military establishment, or Iranian military establishment be comfortable in sharing the critical technologies with each other? And what is the likelihood that some sensitive information will not leak to its adversaries?

Pakistan has close military ties with Iran, we are aligned more than you can see.

& in the process get sanctioned by the US and infuriate the KSA.

Additionally, I think an SSN/SSBN are resource-draining and overkill items, especially for countries focusing on regional deterrence or dominance, and they would not be viable unless Iran is indeed planning on acquiring nuclear weapons. Then there is the issue of miniaturizing the warheads to fit on SLCM or SLBM, which in itself brings up a new debate. Given their geographic situation they should focus on AIP equipped diesel-electric submarine. That would not only take care of the prestige element but security as well.

Iran has the knowledge base and related industry to build such submarines if required, secondly they can get help from Russia as well, but in my opinion Iran don’t need such submarines for next few years before first building more heavy submarines of 1000 tons and more classification.

Besat and qaem class subs under development ( already designed or under production!!), Previously announced displacement is about 1400+ tons later it was 3500+ tons.
These r very old projects and following em iran got confidence for nuclear sub, at least 6000+ tons...

Can iran even build a miniature nuclear plant?

Building midget subs is different than building boomers.

Iran is already operational with 02 x fatheh class which is around 600 tons disposition. Midget are numerous. More than 20 secondly Iran already regularly overhaul 03 Russian disease kilo class subs of around 5000 ton disposition. Thirdly Iran has mastered centrifuged and reactors of various designs they have excellent scientific knowledge base and human resource to do that.

show me a single country that has something like Jask launching system.
Jask 2 has a range of 19 miles and is called a copy of Chinese C-704.

Whats so special about it? We produce Babur SLCM with much longer ranges.

And we are talking about nuclear subs not short ranged missiles.

Even your midget subs are basically iranian made copies of north korean subs.
