Iran offers Syria

TEHRAN, IRAN—A high-ranking Iranian official said his country is ready to share “experience and capabilities” with the Tehran-backed regime of President Bashar Assad in Syria, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The late Wednesday report said Iran’s vice president in charge of international affairs, Ali Saeedlou, described the two countries as powerful nations able to influence regional and global stability.

The comments appear to reinforce Iran’s support for its main Middle East ally and counter speculation that Iran’s leadership was facing internal battles over whether to continue their backing for the embattled Assad.

“Tehran is ready to give its experience and capabilities to its friend and brother nation of Syria,” IRNA reported Saeedlou as saying in a meeting with Syria’s deputy prime minister, Omar Ibrahim Ghalawanji, who is in Tehran with a Syrian delegation.

Saeedlou did not elaborate about which experience or capabilities he had in mind.

On Tuesday Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, a spokesman of Iran’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that Assad’s regime has friends in the region poised to “strike out” — an apparent reference to forces that include militant groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah, whose strongholds lie along the Syrian border, maintains a heavily armed guerrilla force that has held its own against its high-tech Israeli adversary. It has ideological links to Tehran’s theocratic regime, and has long benefited from support in Damascus.

Iran would not likely dispatch military units or hardware to Syria, however — earlier on Wednesday Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi reiterated his country’s stance against military intervention in its key ally, noting that at present “Iran has no military forces in Syria” nor plans to send any.

State TV reported the Syrian delegation signed cooperation agreements involving dam construction as well as power plant and grid development, building on previous collaboration in past years when Iran built several car-making and cement factories in Syria.

Syria’s Ghalawanji described his country as facing serious challenges as a result of “cruel sanctions” imposed by the U.S., European Union, and Arab countries on Damascus over its handling of an increasingly bloody 17-month uprising, the IRNA report said.

It also said that Iran’s First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Ghalawanji in a separate meeting that he could count on unwavering support from Iran.

“Given that powers have united to damage the Syrian nation, Iran’s stance toward Syria is not changeable — it will always stand by its Syrian brothers,” Rahimi was quoted as saying.

Some 17,000 people have died in the Syrian uprising since March 2011. Syrian opposition groups have refused Iran’s proposal to play a mediator role between Assad and rebels.

Tehran stamped out its own wave of mass protests in 2009, launching a severe crackdown on the opposition Green Movement after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The movement has been mostly silent since then.

Honestly I wonder why these western media never spoke on what support Iran is going to provide to Syria , it clearly stated in his speech on TV

And while Syria burns, the rest of the world sits back and says,......'Schadenfreude'..(Look it up)

better is to say while only less than 10 country want the peace and stability in Syria the rest of the world want the Syria burned by terrorists and armed Gang .

Its just what they did with Somalia , if you don't believe me go and see what happened there 30 years ago just because they had a communist government .

Iran must fully now interfere in Syria as it has been fully proven that Qatar and Saudi is making problem in Syria

I think Iran is too careful with Syria as well. If Syria falls, Iran is next, so why not to start battlefield in Syria? Just economic or intelligence help isnt enough. Sure West will scream bloody murder, but whats the difference compared to now?

Syria needs help with better borders control, to limit mercenaries and arms flow, more manpower to quicker dispatch terrorists around the country and/or to have more security in the cities, so gangs couldnt take over them even for short while.

If West finally attacks Syria, then Iran could help to deal much more damage to attackers, ultra-silent subs would feast on NATO Navy, etc.

Majority of Syrians support Assad, therefore he'll stay in power until peace is restored and Syrians will have another chance to prove who they want as president, in a free elections.

Oh, and who said to you 60% of Syria is controlled by terrorists? You invented it yourself, or your master from US told you so? :azn:

Syria is suffering from guys like you.Extremists who flame sectarian wars in a secular country like Syria.Muslim countries have always suffered from guys like you.Seeing everything through Shia/Sunni glasses. How pathetic can someone be.
I wouldn't care so much if Assad goes or not,but it's good to see he is getting rid of Salafi terrorists and foreign paid mercenaries.Today,Syrian army have captured and killed dozens of foreign nationals, from Afghanistan,Iraq,Jordan,Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. The more they are killed, better it is.
The real Syrians also are happy to see there are some people defending their country against extremists.

Thoughts by Channel 4 correspondent in Syria (they are anti-Assad and "West can do no wrong" as always, but still few things leak through)

What will happen in Aleppo?

Probably what happened in Damascus – the rebels will lose.

But the rebels look to be doing well on TV?

That’s because they are winning the propaganda war better than the real war.

But why is the Syrian army shelling its own people?

You could just as easily ask why are the rebels using the Syrian people as human shields? It’s a dirty civil war and the rebels sometimes choose to fight in residential areas.

So what do Syrians want?

Hard to tell. But for sure this is not Egypt – there are no Tahrir Squares or vast protests against the regime.

There is no discernible sign in any of the big cities – Homs, Aleppo and Damascus for example, that the people even wish to rise up against the regime.

The state is firmly in control- there are secret and overt police and army on pretty much every major street and junction in these cities.
