89 hours after quake, Taiwan team in Turkey rescues woman

Taipei, Feb. 10 (CNA) Members of the Taiwan Search & Rescue Team miraculously pulled a woman from a collapsed residential building in the Turkish province of Adiyaman on Thursday (local time), about 89 hours after a massive earthquake devastated the area.

According to Taiwan's National Fire Agency, Taiwanese rescuers first detected the injured victim of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake at 2:37 a.m. Thursday (local time), some 70 hours after the quake flattened thousands of buildings in both Turkey and Syria early on Feb. 6.

The team found the woman to be pinned under a fallen concrete pillar but still able to speak with a clear mind and then used a life detector device to get a better idea of her situation.

They used special tools to break up the pillar in their bid to get closer to the victim, and notified medical personnel to remain on standby at the scene, the agency said in a statement.

At 12:43 p.m., Taiwanese and Turkish rescuers confirmed her exact location and found her to be under other objects, including wrecked floor panels, a bed mattress and quilts.

The 35-year-woman was eventually rescued from the wreckage 19 hours and 37 minutes after she was initially found to be alive by the Taiwanese team.

The rescue was a rare moment of good news in the aftermath of the earthquake and major aftershocks that has left more than 20,000 dead in Turkey and Syria, with the toll likely to climb further.

Taiwan has dispatched a total of 130 personnel and five sniffer dogs to Turkey since Monday. Most of them have arrived in Adiyaman, one of the hardest-hit areas, where they began their search and rescue mission soon after their arrival.

The woman rescued Thursday was the second living person picked out of earthquake rubble by the team.

It pulled another woman from a collapsed building in Adiyaman on Wednesday night, but she died shortly afterwards at a local hospital, according to the Taipei City Fire Department on Thursday.

Greece has sent four flights carrying humanitarian aid to Türkiye on Thursday while another two flights are due to depart. The humanitarian aid amounts to 90 tonnes in total. The European Civil Protection Mechanism is covering 75 pct of the transport costs while the remaining 25pct, representing the national contribution, is covered by AEGEAN Airlines.

Hellenic Red Cross humanitarian mission to support affected areas in Turkey departs on Friday

The first humanitarian mission of the Hellenic Red Cross to support the affected areas in Turkey is to depart on Friday from Athens.
Three trucks and a rescue vehicle of the Hellenic Red Cross, manned by its specially trained staff, will transport approximately 40 tons of humanitarian aid (durable food, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, personal hygiene items, etc.), which will be delivered directly to the warehouses of the Turkish Red Cross, in the centre of the affected area.
It is noted that the next mission of the Hellenic Red Cross will soon depart for Syria.
Volunteers flying with Turkish team

A group of 30 trained volunteers of the national Hellenic Rescue Team (HRT) are departing on Thursday night to help in earthquake-stricken Türkiye with a rescue dog and specialized equipment.

The HRT is expected to fly to Istanbul and catch a flight on to Adana, in the company of officials of the Turkish Directorate of Catastrophe and Emergency Situations Management (AFAD), with whom it will work in the field.

The earthquake is bigger than it looks. The estimated death toll will exceed 100,000. At least 3 million people will be homeless. Our government made a big mistake by not putting the army on the field in the first moments. Now, serious problems, especially security, have started to appear in the region.

Disaster coordination sources said there has been a huge rush of in-kind aid. A massive mobilization of aid from around the world and Turkiye has begun in the first hours, and is now reaching the disaster victims. Reports from the field show that huge hills of clothing have formed. For this reason, a letter may have been sent to consulates abroad.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people of Singapore, for your aid. Please tell your friends and people around you that we thank you very much, we love you.
