International aids for twin earthquake in Kahramanmaraş/Turkiye | Common Thread

Turks living in China set off the first aid caravan with 600 generators, thousands of blankets and heaters, head-mounted lighting etc.

There is also a big mobilization in Germany. Thousands of generators and heaters are being delivered to the region.

All types of generators, big and small, personal or with trailers, are being tried to be delivered to the region.

People are saying Turkish Government has not mobilized its military to help the stranded people.
Is it true?

True and not true. Disaster and emergency coordination in Turkiye is organized by AFAD(Disaster and Emergency Management Authority). It is true that the TAF was not mobilized with all its means on the first night. However, the civil defense organization proved to be weak in the face of a disaster of this scale. This difficulty in the first hours of the earthquake and the fact that the TAF was not the main element is rightly criticized by many people, including myself, because even without specialized personnel, we could have been more effective with more manpower. The TAF dispatched its specialized personnel to the region, but there were thousands of debris, and after a day we realized how big a disaster we were facing. The second army was deployed 12 hours later, but transportation was difficult due to the devastated infrastructure.

The earthquake had a devastating effect on a geography the size of Germany. More than 13 million people were affected by the disaster. 11 provinces were devastated. A disaster in such a large geography was something that had never been experienced before and the state failed to show a quick reflex. In some areas, rescue operations started very late. Especially in most districts and central neighborhoods of Antakya and Kahramanmaras, people had to survive the first night with great impossibilities, even though the destruction was massive. If you ask why disaster coordination is being carried out through the civil defense organization, it is partly because of the psychology created by the July 15 coup attempt. After 2016, the army started to move out of barracks in city centers and moved to out of towns.

Things seem to have settled down now and a certain organizational capacity has been reached, but discussions on this issue will continue for a long time.

The government through Basarnas will send a SAR team of 47 personnel to assist in the search for earthquake victims in Turkey.

As of Wednesday (8/2), the death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria had soared to more than 8,700 people. That number will increase significantly because there are still many families still trapped under the rubble.

Indonesian civilian organization team has already arrived much earlier than Government team and has already been working on the effected areas in Turkiye for 2 days.

Many Indonesians comments can be seen on this Youtube, I think it will represent regular Indonesian feeling about what happen in Turkey and Syria

People should try to send things that will help people get through the cold nights in the short term.

Winter clothes, blankets, foldable tents, sleeping bags, torches, batteries - people will have lost everything.

Those in North Syria will be the worst affected because of the war making aid efforts more difficult.

The Special Disaster Response Units, EMAK 1 from Athens and EMAK 2 from Thessalonika, they are the ones directly involved in rescue operations in Turkey. The 1st team has been operating since yesterday in the Hatai city, the 2nd will start tonight or tomorrow morning.
Each team(21 persons) consists of firefighters-rescuers, paramedics, a doctor, a seismologist, an engineer and a rescue dog.
Both of these units belong to the Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union as an immediate intervention unit of permanent readiness in various missions abroad.

In the following video you see EMAK men who saved a 6-year-old girl and a 50-year-old man.

A pregnant woman was rescued by a Chinese rescue team from a collapsed eight-story building in the Turkish city of Hatay early Thursday.

The Chinese team members worked with local partners to extricate the woman who was buried under the debris after Turkey and Syria were rocked by devastating earthquakes.
