The Greek government, Greek Orthodox Church, and municipalities among others have issued calls to the public for collection of basic needs for the earthquake-stricken regions of Türkiye and Syria.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Greece will collect from the Holy Archbishopric of Athens and Metropolitan Churches of Greece the following items: new blankets and comforters (duvets), bottled water, long-shelf-life milk, pasta, rice, and legumes. The items may be collected from February 12 (Sunday) to February 19 (also Sunday). The items will be dispatched by the Athens Archbishopric See’s ‘Apostoli’ charity.

In addition, several municipalities of Attica have called for donations of items. Please consult with each municipality, as the lists are extensive and specific to the municipalities, as well as in terms of the hours and dates of collection.

Number of countries offering assistance 95
Number of countries with active search and rescue activities in the field 53
Number of foreign personnel on the ground 6153
Number of countries teams are expected to reach 20
Number of foreign personnel expected to reach 2449

Thus, approximately 5% of the total team size for search and rescue activities provided by foreign countries. We would like to express our gratitude to the officials of all the countries that have come and are coming.

Azerbaijan, Israel, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, France, India, Iraq, Georgia, S.Korea, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, El Salvador, Spain, USA and Russia are the leading countries in terms of personnel support. I would like to express my gratitude to all the countries that came to help and prayed for us. But of all these countries, Ukraine in particular will never be forgotten for coming to the rescue with both teams and fire-fighting aircrafts.

The Japanese government and charities in the country are sending rescue teams and aid to quake-devastated areas of Turkey and Syria.

Tokyo said Feb. 7 it will soon dispatch a second rescue team comprising 55 members, including police officers, to Turkey.

Its first rescue team of 18 members was sent on Feb. 6, and Japan said it is ready to send more people upon request from Ankara.

The earthquakes struck on Feb. 6, causing widespread damage and thousands of deaths.

Japanese charities are sending teams to Turkey.

AAR Japan, a nonprofit organization, said two local staff members are now in Gaziantep in Turkey near the epicenter. They plan to provide food, medicine and blankets to people taking shelter in public facilities in the area, which is covered in snow.

The charity also provided aid to Turkey when a huge earthquake hit the country in 1999. Since 2012, AAR Japan has been helping Syrian refugees who fled to Turkey.

Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a nongovernmental organization, said a team of five health care and rescue workers left Japan for Turkey on Feb. 6. They will be joined by two of their colleagues from Moldova, where they were helping Ukrainian refugees.

The NGO said it held a joint disaster drill with a local group in Turkey in summer 2022.

AAR and PWJ are also seeking to work in Syria with their partners in the war-torn country. They are concerned the quake and aftershocks may have damaged offices and warehouses for international charities in Gaziantep, which serves as a logistic hub to provide aid to Syrians who have lost their homes in the decade-long civil war.

“The earthquake has devastated Syrian refugees already hit hard by the civil war,” said Michiyo Adachi, the manager of IVY, an NPO that has been supporting Syrian refugees. “We plan to work with local partners to provide aid.”

The Japanese Red Cross Society announced Feb. 7 it would donate 20 million yen (about $152,000) to the local branch of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It will also start an emergency fund-raising drive

Greece is sending five aircraft with humanitarian aid to Turkey, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, to deal with the immediate consequences of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the country in the early hours of February 6. On the order of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece will provide health and medical equipment and basic necessities, such as 7,500 blankets, 1,500 beds, and 500 tents, which can accommodate families and be used as mobile clinics.
The first humanitarian aid mission to Turkey will be accompanied by Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, Christos Stylianidis and the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilios Papageorgiou. It will depart in the next few hours from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.
According to the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry, Aegean Airlines will carry out five flights in order to transfer all equipment as soon as possible. The mission is carried out in consultation with the Turkish authorities, with the assistance of the Turkish ambassador in Athens, and in cooperation with the European Commission, in the framework of the activation of the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

It is noted that the cost of transporting the equipment will be covered by 75 pct by the European Civil Protection Mechanism, while the remaining 25 pct of the national participation will be sponsored by the Aegean airline.

Several rescue teams across China rushed to Turkiye to help with rescue efforts following devastating earthquakes, including the Blue Sky Rescue (BSR) team, a professional non-profit search-and-rescue organization.

Chongqing Blue Sky Rescue Team arrived in the southern Turkish city of Malatya. The team officially launched rescue work Thursday, finding one victim and two survivors with the rescue work underway by press time.

The first batch of the BSR team arrived in Turkiye on February 9, including nine earthquake rescue professionals selected by Southwest China's Chongqing BSR team, then quickly rushed to the earthquake-stricken areas for the rescue.

"This rescue work will demonstrate our professional rescue abilities and Chinese civilian rescue forces to promote international humanitarianism." Luo Mingwen, leader of the Chongqing Blue Sky Rescue Team, said and added, "I believe we can complete this mission."

Assembled in Wanzhou district, Northeast Chongqing, this nine-member team left for Wuhan Tianhe International Airport to join other members of the BSR team, carrying rescue equipment such as thermal imaging equipment, drones, earthquake-breaking systems, radar life detectors, satellite ground stations, and satellite phones.

These professionals have participated in many earthquake rescue efforts with rich rescue experience.

At the same time, all sectors of society lend a helping hand. Aykut Yazirli is a Turkish businessman who has lived in Chongqing for almost 11 years.

"This is the first time in my life that I heard of such a big earthquake in Turkiye," he said. "We have many friends here in China, and they all help to look for what victims need for now."
Yazirli pointed out that the problem lies in the freezing winter temperature, which complicates rescue efforts. "We're especially looking for living conditions for the victims, such as food, clothes, blankets, electronic products," he said.

Xinhua reported that a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Turkiye's southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 am local time (0117 GMT), followed by a magnitude 6.4 quake a few minutes later in the country's southern province of Gaziantep and a magnitude 7.6 earthquake at 1:24 pm local time (1024 GMT) in Kahramanmaras Province. On Wednesday, an 82-member Chinese rescue team arrived at Adana Airport in Turkiye at 4:30 am local time (0130 GMT) after flying over 8,000 km on a chartered Air China plane.

According to the Foreign Ministry, in the early hours today local time, they rescued a pregnant woman trapped under the debris together with Turkish rescuers. Last night, the Hong Kong SAR government also sent a 59-member search and rescue team to Turkiye to assist in local rescue efforts. This morning, a plane took off from Beijing and headed to Syria, carrying the first batch of medical supplies enough to cover the needs of 5,000 people and a rescue team from the Red Cross Society of China. Apart from the cash assistance and material aid that have been announced, the Chinese side is also speeding up the delivery of ongoing food aid programs for Syria, including 220 tons of wheat already on its way and more than 3,000 tons of rice and wheat to be shipped in two batches shortly.
