That is a report from civlian auditors who often fail to present detailed or representative accounts on the military.
This news is straight from the horse's mouth (IN) who are saying December 2018
Btw, the Vikrant is based on the Kiev class
Nonsense of the highest order.
Mig-29 is not the first choice for the Kuznetsov but due to it's smaller size, there are considering a mix wing.
The MiG-29K is the Russian Navy's first choice, no navy (other than the PLA(N) that has next to no expereince in carrier operations) opts to fly heavy class fighters from their carriers these days. The USN that has 100K "supercarriers" ditched the F-14 for the F-18 a long time ago and the F-35 is of a similar weight/size.
Operating heavy fighters from a medium sized carrier is a dangerous game.
so its jan 2019 the ship would be operational ?
Expect a long trail/validation process for the IAC-1, it likely won't be in operational service before 2020 but will be handed over to the IN in 2018.
Also I am muh more worried about the Air Arm going into IAC1. The Mig29K reports as per CAG makes me feel even with both carriers on sea, our strike capabilities are not at all upto mark.
We've spoken about this bro, if the IN had plans to operate the MiG-29K from the IAC-1 they would have placed orders for the MiG-29K by now. But it doesn't look like the IN is getting ready to do anything of the sort and with the latest CAG report this looks even less likely.
To operate 2 carrier wings and have adequate shore based assets for training and such duties the IN requires 5-6 SQNs (plus war reserves). The way it stands the IN will have only 3 SQNs (of MiG-29K/KUB).
Now if only there was another option, perhaps a plane that would have commonality with the IAF and that would have its own production line in India that has a proven naval varient in service that has seen operational deployments.......
