Indonesia prepares to host 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup

Do you like basketball too ??

Yup, Indonesia and Philippine usually fight each other to show who is the best in South East Asia. Usually we always lost to them. Philippine is the basketball country, the sport is their most popular one, and it is why they dont have difficulties to get talent, while Indonesian favorite sport is football, badminton, and volley ball respectively. Basketball in Indonesia is pretty much only played by people living in big cities where football field is very scarce.

On the other hand, Philippine football team for instant is weak among the South East Asian countries.

For the last 25 years, Indonesia and Philippine national basket ball teams are always the two best team in South East Asia. Just last year Thailand and Vietnam are getting better in Seagames and Indonesia must be satisfied in the fourth places for 5x5 game, but we still manage to be the second best in 3x3 game.

This is full game of final basket ball Seagames (South East Asian sport games) in 2017. Philippine uses mix blood players and one naturalized player.

The Filipinos are addicted to basketball which is unusual because they are relatively short people. Who tends to be taller Filipino or Indonesian people?

Pakistan does have potential, but there is zero facilities here. If they build basketball courts at every college. You can have 12 full courts (or 24 half courts) for the size of one football field.

Yup, Philippine addiction to basketball is more because of American colonization, not because they have competitive advantage in physical aspect. Indonesia, Malaysian, Philippine, native Taiwanese, and Brunei are pretty much the same race and Western classify it as Austronesian people. I see they do have similar height and it can be seen on other sport like football and volley ball.

Pakistan has potential since Pakistani has similar physic with Indian Punjabi where the tallest people are there. If we see Indian basketball players, it is pretty much a Punjabi team. Indian Punjabi is about 30 million while Pakistani has 200 million people.

The state of Pakistani basketball is quite pathetic. No players even make it to the NBA G League. There needs to be seriously done by the government. Pakistani people are least athletics nation in the world. Even in cricket, we are not a top nation. Even poor Africa has millions of players, so much, you can fill every roster in every team of any sport in the world.

Its completely bureaucracy and laws fault. There is a lot of talent but zero resources. Sadly, only Pakistani basketball player I can think of is a comedian who is mediocre at the sport. You probably seen this dude already. Comes from America, of course. That's the only way we're gonna see a Pakistani in the NBA, if they grew up in America or any other country with a reputable basketball resources.

LOL that Pakistani is funny, just look on how he is desperately wanting to play among the African American players there

Yup, facilities is important, at least there should be one basketball field in every schools and there should be competition ranging from junior high school, high school, university, and professional leagues, and even in the professional leagues there should be at least two divisions.

Indonesian try to do that despite we are lacking government support. Indonesian basketball get good financing from business community and the professional club owners who are mostly rich persons. Only football that has huge financial support from both central and local government, something that basketball community is still dreaming of.

Indonesia has started its junor and senior high school competition called DBL around 2008 and it is initiated by a private business under Jawa Post media conglomerate. DBL becomes a separate company and Today it has quite range of basketball competition from junior and senior high school across Indonesia.

Just around 5 years ago, IMO, the DBL basketball competition start to grow bigger and even reach Papuan province. And since 2018, pretty much all of Indonesian national team players under 18 were playing in DBL competition. So it is why I am quite optimistic for Indonesian future basketball team and we can see that the junior competition has shown some result to create tallen as current senior Indonesian basketball team has 2 players who are still studying in high school and two players who are still studying in university.

Despite so, some good national players start retiring when they reach 30 years old like our previous center, Sitepu, because the salaries of professional basketball players in Indonesia are not adequate to secure their retirement ages period, unless they become coach in our basketball professional leagues.

DBL founder, Azrul Anan, who is actually the son of Jawa Post media conglomerate owner.

Pakistan indeed has good advantage to be competitive in basketball competition at least in Asia level. We can see that Pakistan men average height is higher than both India and Indonesia. India wich I believe rely mostly the talent from Punjabi region (although they only have 30 million population in that region) is quite competitive in Asia level. We can see how their player height and skills are not less than Arab players.

You can see Pakistan has better men average height compared to India. And with around 200 million people this country have, I believe it will be not difficult to find talents, particularly if Pakistan has regular competition since high school and also has basketball professional league.

Indonesian Basketball Team is undergoing training in Bandung, West Java, because Jakarta is still under semi-lockdown measure.

Previously the team planed to get training in East European country but due to pandemic it chooses to get trained inside the country and use IBL teams (Indonesian Professional Basketball League) for sparring games. It will face Thailand in November this year, a game which is important for Indonesia to win in order to open more possibility to play in 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Derrick Michael has been selected by NBA Global Academy to be trained in Australia with 11 other top talents from outside USA and at a time get education so he can finish his high school in Australia. This is a very good news for Indonesian basketball team. Currently Indonesia has already had 2 experienced center players and I hope he can be taught in Australia as power forward, not a center and he should practice shooting as much as he can there.

Current players IMO are already enough to compete in FIBA Asia Qualifier, particularly after national team can call 2 forward from IBL teams with has 195 cm heigh which one of them is the one I suggest to call (Juan Laurent). They can do it since IBL competition is stopped this year.

So hopefully national team can still pass the qualification to FIBA World Cup without his present. He then can be a very good addition for national team to compete in FIBA World Cup in 2023, particularly if he can play as a power forward instead of center.

Practice again. Around the final week of this month the team will leave Indonesia for second round of FIBA Asia Qualification competition in Bahrain. Indonesia will face Thailand and must win to secure place into the next round of qualification.

I dont think Malaysia is above Indonesia, we always beat Malaysia whether in Seagames or SEABA. Indonesia only need to rank 8 in ASIA FIBA cup in order to play in World Cup since we are going to be the host in 2023, along with Japan and Philippine.

Indonesia basketball team rarely plays in ASIAN games due to money constrain. The latest one in ASIAN Games 2018 and it is due to the fact that we hosted the games.

Indonesia never has participated in any FIBA 5x5 World Cup competition yet, but we have participated in FIBA World Cup 3x3 games for both men and women competition.
