The minister of defense has urged state aerospace manufacturer Dirgantara Indonesia to develop and build the country’s own type of attack helicopter to complement the fleet of Apache gunships purchased in a recent deal from the United States.

Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said at the weekend that the eight Apache AH-64 attack helicopters ordered for the Army would only make up half a squadron.

“We should strive to fill up the rest of the squadron with domestically produced aircraft,” he said.

He added that he hoped any helicopter designed by DI would not be inferior to the Apache in terms of specifications and capabilities.

“It might probably be below the Apache in terms of specifications, but it shouldn’t lag far behind in terms of capability,” he said.

He said the government’s long-term plan was to nurture the budding domestic arms industry so that over time the Indonesian armed forces could gradually replace their foreign weapons systems with locally developed and manufactured ones.

But to meet current requirements, Purnomo went on, the government would have to rely on importing equipment and arms from abroad.

The minister declined to divulge how much the purchase last week of the eight Apache helicopters cost, saying only that the cost was justified, given the specifications of the aircraft.

Officials confirmed that the sale represented the culmination of more than a year of behind-the-scenes work by Indonesia, which saw the helicopters as a key part of a wider plan to modernize its weapons systems.

A 14-person delegation traveled to a Boeing factory in Arizona last week to inspect the aircraft.

On meeting the Indonesian delegation, Boeing business development manager Dave Bostrum said the deal was important to the evolution of the Indonesian military.

“The Apache is expected to be a key part of Indonesia’s continuing efforts to improve its strategic defense capabilities,” he said.

When it first emerged that Indonesia wanted to acquire the helicopters, two human rights groups — the East Timor Action Network and the West Papua Advocacy Team — wrote to the US Congress expressing opposition to the sale, arguing that the aircraft would only exacerbate the persecution of suspected separatists in Papua.

Indonesia’s defense preparedness has lagged in recent years, with economic problems preventing the country from maintaining or upgrading its military equipment. During his first term, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono slashed defense purchases to free up money for economic and social policies, but he later increased the defense budget.

"Indonesia should begin self-sufficient in defense procurement". "The purchase of defense equipment should be included transfer of technology". The words often come to our ears. Everyone agrees with that sentence. Beautiful, because it brings to the wishful heyday.

Now, let's pull into the real world. PT DI has long planned to make a light attack helicopter. A few years ago released the name Bumblebee, light attack helicopters that would refer to the NBO-105. Bolkow 105 helicopter is the Army is often used in military operations as a ground attack.

PT DI can be said to be a master of business technology NBO 105. The difference, Bumblebee will be used as a light attack helicopter with tandem seat configuration, equipped with machine gun and rocket pods.

Not yet had its prototype made, appears again Gandiwa light attack helicopter concept that refers to the NB-412 helicopter. In addition to a master in the field of technology NB-105, Indonesia has also mastered the NB-412 technology.

Gandiwa also tandem seat configuration, but has a greater ability than Blumblebee.

But .. again again however. Light attack helicopter Gandiwa just busy talking while airshow military or defense equipment. "Indonesia can make a helicopter assault! Terrific. Man was amazed. Once the exhibition is over, the project is saved into the helicopter Gandiwa back in the drawer and locked.

Without us knowing the plan of helicopter formations Gandiwa busy talking internationally, including in Europe. They understand PT DI has decades of dabbling dipembuatan helicopter, so no doubt it anymore.

Gandiwa / Nemesis, TNI Attack Helicopter

Helicopter Gandiwa have the ability to ambush intended for ground targets, such as infantry and armored vehicles and capable of carrying air-to-air missiles for self-defense. In addition to providing air support for ground forces, Gandiwa an anti-tank, armored vehicle to crush opponents.

Design Development
Gandiwa combat helicopters have two engines with four-blade composite blade and equipped to support the wing pylon carried weapons. Main rotor, tail rotor, engine and gearbox does not undergo major changes from the helicopter base. However, avionics and systems modified and adapted to the needs of the primary attack helicopter.

For ease of pilot in carrying out its mission to use glass cockpit avionics system. The addition of weapons and firing control system also became central to the development of this helicopter.

Weight and weight distribution does not change much from the helicopter base. However, passengers and payload are normally carried, changed to guns and ammunition. Gandiwa is magic arrows of Arjuna belongs equipped tube containing an infinite number of arrows.

PT DI has explained everything about the light attack helicopter prototype Gandiwa. Both of the series: characteristics, performance and weaponry.More than that no man in this world who doubted the ability of PT DI to make the helicopter.

Army budget in 2013 reached Rp 14 trillion. Certainly not excessive portion allocated for the manufacture of light attack helicopters Gandiwa. Gandiwa is the independence of defense equipment we're looking for and we are bringing when talking procurement.

Will Helicopter Gandiwa Manifests?

We take a look thought president director of PT Indonesian Aerospace (PT DI) John Smith when reporters visited the Head Office of PT DI, Jalan Padjadjaran, Bandung, Friday (15/02/2013).

PT DI no longer be dependent on government capital injections, but must think being a corporate aircraft company which focuses on the market.

"Simply put, the first priority to make PT DI competitive compared to other companies, especially in production. We do not sell the design, we are selling goods.

"We strengthened PT DI into persahaan not research company, hopefully not mixed politics. Soeharto bad experience once stopped, destroyed all programs. PT DI to the front no longer wanted to sell the dream, but rather produce products based on ability.

Are you optimistic light attack helicopter Gandiwa immediately realized or otherwise, after listening to the views of the Director of PT DI on top?

Turkish T-129 helicopter

If Indonesia still arguing about the discourse of making light attack helicopter Gandiwa, then Turkey in 2013 began producing domestically made attack helicopter T-129. What was said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is currently testing a prototype attack helicopter watch T-129 :

Our goal is fully provision with defense products through domestic production.

1: PT DI Director is Budi Santoso....not John Smith (why this western guy included on the news ?? :cuckoo:

2: Almost all early development of PT DI made aircraft is conducted by BPPT and LAPAN, two government body. This kind of work will not burden PT DI Finance condition. Beside that in 2014 PT DI expected to have 500 % increase revenue based on signed contract, so it should be fine financially to start developing this project in more serious one.

Usually the prototype is done by that government agency....and then PT DI just do the production.

Congratulations to Indonesia @Indos
From where they will get the engines??

CN 235 engine (PT DI/CASA Aircraft) is similar with Apache Guardian engine...so there is no problem with that one....

The name "Gandiwa" strikes a name in mind , Arjuna's bow was also named Gandiwa...

Yep its names after Arjun's bow. Its mentioned in the poster as well.

The first line reads, " Gandiwa diambil dari nama senjata busur yang berisi anak panah dengan jumlah tak terbatas milik Arjuna yang didapat dari dewa Baruna."

Roughly translates to, The name Gandiwa is taken from Arjuna's Bow which he received from Varuna and it had infinite arrows.

. .
the coptor looks bad-***.

Which one ? The first one blumbebe...? Yup, the name is also quite bad....but the second one (the latest) which is Gandiwa looks like Apache...I think you read fast and just remember the blumbebe. Blumbebe is the first project and look fat at the picture posted here, its not continued, and Gandiwa is the second project we have...

They should take help from WEST or Russian design companies that can enhance it and work on more range of Transport Military/Civilian choppers as well.

I dont think this project is continuing, and not really feasible too, since the market for attack helo is kinda small and dominated by more mature design

I might be wrong though
