In March, an Indonesian patrol boat captured a Chinese fishing trawler illegally operating within Indonesia’s territorial waters. Before it could impound the offending vessel, however, two Chinese coast guard vessels appeared, stole back the trawler, and towed it back to international waters, leaving the Indonesians with only the Chinese crew to show for their efforts.

Last week there was a another, similar encounter, but with different outcome. This time around, the Indonesians brought a bigger boat: a Navy destroyer.

Both of the incidents took place around Indonesia’s remote Natuna islands, northwest of Borneo in the South China Sea. Beijing acknowledged last November that the islands belong to Indonesia.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea as its own, based partly on a nine-dash line drawn on a map shortly after World War 2. It’s been aggressively bolstering that claim with island-building, militarization, and diplomatic maneuverings.

The exclusive economic zone of the Natunas intersects with China’s nine-dash line. That zone, prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, extends 200 nautical miles from the coast, and within it a nation has the rights to marine, energy, and other resources.

But while China conceded the Natunas to Indonesia, it didn’t mention anything (paywall) about the exclusive economic zone, which it doesn’t seem to have much respect for judging by the intrusions of its well-backed “fishing militia.” In March China’s foreign ministry called the area where the episode took place “traditional Chinese fishing grounds.” And China’s fishing fleet ignores the exclusive economic zones of many nations—even distant Argentina’s.

That’s a big reason why Indonesia has since last year been beefing up its military presence in the Natunas, sending soldiers, fighter jets, and warships to the islands, and upgrading a small military base. Last month it even added networked nano-satellites orbiting the planet to its arsenal, so it can more easily decide where to send patrol ships. “We aspire to turn Natuna Air Force base into an integrated military base—the Pearl Harbor of Indonesia,” Indonesian air force commander Agus Supriatna told Antara last November.

In the incident last week, the Chinese fishing trawler, called the Gui Bei Yu 27088, was intercepted by the Indonesian destroyer Oswald Siahaan-354, which blocked a rescue attempt by a Chinese coast guard vessel. The Indonesian Navy said it fired shots at the trawler when it refused to stop fishing, then seized it.

The Chinese crew is now in Indonesian custody awaiting prosecution under Indonesia’s fisheries laws—and this time, so is their trawler

just don't know, but the armed forces seem eager to bought at least a battalion sized long range Air Defense missile system to be placed at Natuna, along with several naval warships. Ironic huh.... :D

Correction, not Destroyer but merely a frigate, KRI Oswald Siahaan

Indonesia Sends Military Backup to Natuna to Deter Chinese Fishing Boats
Jakarta. The Indonesian government will deploy more military personnel in the Natuna Islands following the seizure of a Chinese vessel for illegally fishing in Indonesian territorial waters, Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said on Monday (30/05).

“[We will deploy] three more frigate ships, a fighter jet, drones and radars. We will also send in the Navy'€™s Special Forces, Air Force Special Forces and an Army battalion,” Ryamizard told reporters at the State Palace, as reported by Vivanews.

Ryamizard made his comment after an incident on Friday, when Indonesian frigate Oswald Siahaan 354 intercepted Chinese fishing vessel Gui Bei Yu which carried 500 tons of fish.

Ryamizard said the Indonesian government has planned for a long time to deploy more military force in the Natuna Islands to protect the country's borders, but lacked the funding to do so.

“Once we have active [troops] in the area, I hope there will be no more incident like the one we had on Friday,” the minister said.

Although acknowledging that the Natuna Islands belong to Indonesia, China has claimed the waters around them as its "traditional fishing grounds." On March 19, an Indonesian patrol boat intercepted a Chinese boat fishing illegally in Natuna's waters but a Chinese coastguard vessel intervened and prevented Indonesian officials from confiscating the boat.

Maj. Josdy Damopoli, a spokesman for the Fourth Naval Base in Tanjungpinang, said eight people were arrested in Friday's operation.

The fishing vessel tried to escape to international waters despite repeated radio contact and warning shots into the air and water. The boat eventually stopped after the Navy fired a final warning shot across its bows.

Since the March incident, Indonesia has been stepping up patrols in waters surrounding the Natuna Islands using bigger Navy ships and Maritime Ministry patrol boats to secure the area.

Heavier combatants will soon guard Natuna waters after ramming incident several month ago to expecting any other encounter with CCG when arresting chinese illegal fishermen. 2000 personnel alone are being set to the guard the islands

The act (Building Natuna Military base) is not to do against China, it is only to do for some power balance strategy in the region as Indonesia is seen as the leader in the region. By this, it will provide more stability in the region and thus ensure the security and peacefulness of the South East Asian region which is needed for both SEA nations and China in economic aspect.

As we can look on the map, it is much too far from China mainland.

What's wrong with China? You guys are making enemies with everyone. I agree that China is strong but
you do need some friends in the international arena.

I think the leadership there think that as the next superpower means other needs to bow, this kind of thinking is so wrong..

Well, even we are not afraid with the current Superpower when it was in its peak and we were still suffering from economic disaster (Asian Monetary Crisis)

uly 4, 2003 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Indonesia's air force went into high alert on thursday after its radar detected what it said were five U.S. F-18 jets flying in the country's airspace over the Java sea.

Captain Lubis, a Indonesia Air Force spokesman, said that two F-16 block 15OCU were deployed to intercept the U.S. Hornets which were maneuvering over Bawean Island off the eastern coast of Java island .

The F-16s were block 15OCU aircraft from Iswahyudi AFB. According to Lubis, more details would be provided in a media conference today.

A unnamed air force officer has been quoted to say that the US planes were spotted flying for more than two hours above the islands, 800 kilometers west of Jakarta. The planes did not give chase when the US jets left the area.

There were five Hornets in the group and they locked on the F-16s. They asked whether the planes were friends or foe and an international sign indicating they were friends was relayed back.

A US spokesman, Colonel Sagom Tamboen, told the naval aircraft had sought permission to enter Indonesian airspace while escorting a US aircraft carrier. But the request arrived too late at the air force defense headquarters in Jakarta due to red tape, Tamboen said.

Nationalist politicians and military officers have long complained about espionage flights or clandestine airdrops by foreign aircraft across Indonesia's 13,000 islands, which sit strategically between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

The incident follows efforts to rebuild U.S.-Indonesian military relations that were cut in response to Jakarta's failure to rein in militias that rampaged in East Timor when the tiny territory voted to break free in 1999.

Those restrictions include the sale of spare parts for Indonesia's F-16 jets, which has grounded a number of them.

The Chinese should try to create good relations with Indonesia.
Indonesia has the huge potential to become a regional power(if it is not already one) in both the economic and military sense. Your EEZ alone is huge where you have the rights to a vast amount of resources. If those resources are used
properly you can propel yourself forward.

So you intercepted the Americans with their own weapons. Congrats to Indonesia

Dont be fooled by American propaganda. They encourage these ASEAN countries to enroach China territories and when China just defend her own interest. The American media will be full forced hooha about China being the aggressor.

Scarborough Shoal used to be a common ground for China and Pinoy fisherman. The American instigate the Aquino to kick out all Chinese fisherman from there. And China simply react by kicking out all Pinoy fisherman. Guess what, the US media start fabricate lies and paint China as sole aggressor.

https://books.google.com.sg/books?i...hinese fisherman in scarborough shoal&f=false

It just like Indian Nehru forward policy in 1962. The Indian slowly en camp inside Chinese territories inch by inch. You expect Chinese to just sit there and watch them doing it slowly by slowly?

Same as woody island reclaimed. The pinoy and vietnamese have long started islet reclaimation and no other make a sound. China simply by just react to these aggression, guess what? The western media just solely forcus on China reclaimation and try to shove other ASEAN countries action under the bed.

Let me ask you one question. If Indian slowly and slowly encamp inside Pakistan Kashmir area. Are you Pakistanis going to sit there , try lecture or talk them to give up their act or take real action to chase them out? Or you try to be double standard and claim China cant act while all other ASEAN countries can act? Becos SCS is solely ASEAN and not Chinese.

If Chinese claimed whole of Kashmir belongs to India, how would you feel?

I am talking about Natuna islands only. They belong to and are controlled by Indonesia. Chinese fisherman cannot
fish inside the eez of the natuna islands. That is all I am saying. Otherwise, I agree with you.

The incident do not occur in Natuna islands. Its simply a spin over and over nationalistic by the Indonesia. Indonesia is making a big mistake by sending warship. As if PLAN has no warship and our destroyer is far larger and more powerful. There is a reason why coast guard shall do the job. Indonesia coast guard has some bad element who simply try to blackmailed foreign fisherman and acting like pirates. They purposely claimed you are fishing in their water and then forcefully tow your fishing boat into their water to fabricate proof of your illlegal fishing activities. China coast guard simply defend the interest of their fisherman. Do not so easily believe western news regarding any dispute regards to China.

http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/975141.shtml

If you are truly Pakistanis and friend of China, do not believe such news from Indonesian side or western.

Like how western claim you Pakistanis harbour Osama bin Laben and claim you Pakistan as terrorist nation? Are you happy with that accusation? Its from the same source that paint China as aggressor.
