Visit of COAS to Russia

General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff is visiting Russia from 01 to 06 October 2018 on an official bilateral visit. During the visit, the Chief of the Army Staff led delegation is scheduled to meet Senior Military hierarchy of Russian Armed Forces and visit Key Military formations and establishments.

General Bipin Rawat shall be visiting Mikhailovskaya Artillery Academy, Headquarters of Western Military District at St Petersburg and General Staff Academy and Headquarters of a Motorised Rifle Division at Moscow. The visit is yet another milestone in giving impetus to the strategic partnership between India and Russia and taking forward the military to military cooperation to the next level.

Exercise Aviaindra-18

The second edition of Exercise Aviaindra, a Biennial Air Force level exercise between Indian and the Russian Federation, was conducted from 17 Sep 18 to 28 Sep 18. The aim of the exercise was to formulate and validate use of airpower in anti-terrorist operation in a bilateral scenario.

The exercise which was conducted at Lipetsk, Russia began with interaction of the Indian contingent with their Russian counterparts. The aim of the exercise was to learn best practices from one another and it also includes simulator training. The exercise included briefing on Aerospace safety and anti-terrorist air operations.

Curtain Raiser: INDO-Russian joint exercise INDRA 2018

The joint military exercise between Indian and Russia EXERCISE INDRA 2018 on combating insurgency under the aegis of United Nations (UN) is being conducted at Babina Field Firing Ranges, Babina Military Station from 18 November 2018. Company sized contingents of the 5th Army of the Russian Federation and a Mechanised Infantry Battalion of Republic of India will participate in the training exercise spanning for eleven days including induction and de-induction of the Russian contingent. The training will be supervised by a joint directing panel comprising of senior officials of both the national contingents.

The aim of the exercise is to practice joint planning and conduct to enhance interoperability of the two Armies in the peace keeping/ enforcement environment under the aegis of the UN. It focuses upon training on enhancing team building, special tactical level operations such as Cordon and Search, house intervention, handling and neutralisation of Improvised Explosive Devices and integrated employment of force multipliers. The primary focus of the tactical field exercise is to share best practices amongst the militaries and hone existing skills of the troops in the backdrop of interoperability between the two Armies in the peace keeping/ enforcement environment. The topics chosen for the exercise are both live and contemporary affecting both the nation alike.

The tenth exercise in the series of Exercise INDRA is aimed at sending a strong message to the world with an intent of appreciation of interoperability between Indian and Russian Armies for joint tactical level operations in the peace keeping / enforcement environment under the aegis of UN.

Opening Ceremony: Exercise INDRA

Opening ceremony for the Tenth Indo-Russian Joint Exercise, INDRA 18 scheduled from 18 November to 28 November 2018 was held on 19 November 2018 at Babina Military Station. Contingents of the participating nations came together for the opening ceremony which was held in presence of a number of officers and officials of the participating nations. There was a fly past of Army Aviation helicopters which carried the national flags of both the participating nations during the parade. The members of both the participating nations also interacted and familiarised with each other after the opening ceremony.


The aim of the exercise is to practice joint planning and conduct to enhance interoperability of the two armies in the peace keeping and enforcement environment under the aegis of United Nations. The eleven day exercise focuses upon training on enhancing team building and tactical level operations in a counter insurgency environment in semi urban terrain.

Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff to Visit Russia (26 to 29 November 2018)

Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy is visiting Russia from 26 to 29 November 2018. The visit aims to consolidate bilateral defence relations with Russia, as also to explore new avenues for defence cooperation.

The Chief of the Naval Staff will be commencing his official visit from St Petersburg on 26 November 2018, where Chief of the Naval Staff is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with his counterpart, Admiral Vladimir Korolev, Commander-in-Chief, Russian Federation Navy (RuFN). The Admiral is also scheduled to lay a wreath at Piskarev Memorial Cemetery dedicated to the victims of the ‘Siege of Leningrad’ and visit the Nakhimov Naval School and Admiralty Shipyard. At Moscow, the Admiral will have discussions with General VV Gerasimov, Chief of General Staff and First Deputy Defence Minister of the Russian Federation and Mr. Dmitriy Shugaev, Director, Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) of the Russian Federation. The Admiral will also visit the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and deliver a talk on “Indian Navy’s Perspective on Maritime Security”.


The Indian Navy cooperates with the Russian Federation Navy on many fronts, which include operational interactions, training, hydrography cooperation and exchange of Subject Matter Experts in various fields through the medium of Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks. In addition, the Indian Navy and the Russian Federation Navy have been conducting the bilateral Maritime Exercise ‘INDRA NAVY’, since 2003 and INDRA Tri-Services Exercise since 2017. The next edition of Exercise INDRA-Navy is scheduled off Visakhapatnam in December 2018.

Validation Exercise & Closing Ceremony: Exercise Indra 2018

The Tenth Edition of Indo-Russian joint military exercise EX INDRA 2018 culminated on 28 November 2018 after a joint tactical exercise and an impressive closing ceremony held at Babina Military Station. The eleven day long joint training that commenced on 18 November 2018 included developing common understanding of transnational terrorism, interoperability and conduct of joint tactical operations controlled by a Joint Command Post working under the aegis of United Nations.

Classes were organised on cordon and search operations, raid on terrorist hideout, intelligence gathering and sharing, perception management, humanitarian laws and hostage rescue. Integrated live firing was carried out apart from specialised joint training which included road opening drills, clearance of built up areas and destruction of a rebel stronghold in an urban terrain setting. The participating contingents also carried out specialised joint training on hostage rescue by slithering from MI-17 helicopters.

Major General PS Minhas, General Officer Commanding, White Tiger Division of Indian Army and Major General Tsekov Oleg Moosovich, Commander Fifth Army of Russian Army along with representatives and military officials of both countries witnessed the validation exercise conducted at Babina Field Firing Ranges. The troops learnt about each other’s organisations and exchanged ideas and best practices being followed in peace enforcement under aegis of the United Nations.
