India's sixth largest city 'runs out of water'

According to this report. Chennai's reservoirs were built by the British almost a century ago. No real upgrades were done by GOI since independence.....Complete negligence of South India's needs. Where are the Tamil Tigers??

Water is included in the State List under entry 17 in the Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Which means that water supplies, irrigation and canals, drainage and embankments and storage is the responsibility of the State Government, Tamil Nadu in this instance.
Where are the Tamil Tigers??
If the regional parties in TN were not preoccupied by opposing the Centre on every trivial issue, they might have had the time to do something about it.

Ask your Tamil Tigers first if they will let water be included in the Concurrent List, maybe then GOI will be able to do something about it.

Excuses. GOI has funded Dams and water infrastructure in the north. Numerous projects...don't have time to type them all. Is that a violation of your constitution? or is it anti South Indian corruption.

GOI has funded Dams and water infrastructure in the north.
Entry 56 of List I of Seventh Schedule provides that "Regulation and development of inter-State rivers and river valleys to the extent to which such regulation and development under the control of theUnion is declared by Parliament by law to be expedient in the public interest".

You see, when the question of interstate water sharing is concerned only then Centre is involved. Otherwise states reserve the right to manage the dams.
Is that a violation of your constitution?
Therefore your knowledge if half-baked.

It seems you are very much interested in the geopolitics of South India, i am sure you understand the geography too. Pray let us know the scope of dam building in Chennai.

Finally, the Dam Safety Bill was introduced in the parliament late last year which would have given the Center a greater say in dam management. Guess what, it was Tamil Nadu which led the opposition to the Bill. Think twice before laying false accusations against GoI in matters where it doesn't have remit.

India is run by clowns. In China, if we fck up so bad until we need water tankers, CNN and BBC would be blasting this frontpage, and the West would be asking for our heads. lol

Time to build dams in Pakistan

The absence of adequate water storage capacity, however, is wasting this massive resource and causing an acute water shortage.

A 2015 IMF report ranks Pakistan third among countries facing such scarcity, with 2025 seen as a crisis point, if not before.

The solution is a national drive for new dams. Spearheaded by a former head of the Supreme Court, the drive is on for mega projects to store water and promote hydropower. However, dams are not easy to build and require extensive amounts of capital and expertise. So, Pakistan, being a developing country, is asking its citizens to donate money to the cause.

Seems GOI does get involved in water infrastructure. GOI wants to ensure that all Northern Indians have piped water in 5 years.

Agreed. Western media is barely covering this crisis.

As usual, you are firing off your hip. Centre seeks state's cooperation for the same.

The government held a meeting with various state representatives on Tuesday to discuss issues around water availability and local challenges. Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “Water is a state subject but we will provide all the hand-holding required to ensure we improve our coverage of clean drinking water from 18 per cent currently to 100 per cent by 2024.”

China is in heavy rain! many cars are in water.

GOI is a reactive government, they do not plan things ahead. I was watching a documentary about how they built canals for farmland irrigation in India, but it was useless because they didn't link it to a long term water source. The piped water infrastructure would be useless because you have no water to pipe. I mean in China we have a long term plan, we use water sponge tecnology, pavements are made of a special material which is permeable to rain, recharging our underground water. Water recycling in big cities is really prevalent, one thing we haven't reform is the pricing system which I bet would be even harder for India being a democracy. I was shocked India gives out free water to the poor areas. In China there is no such thing as free water, so we tend to value water more.
