ISLAMABAD—Pakistan’s investigative agencies have said that India’s hand in attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore is possible. According to intelligence agencies sources, the national security agencies had credible intelligence information that a few days back some terrorists of Indian intelligence agency RAW had entered Lahore via Wagah border and the relevant security agencies were informed in this regard that a possible back lash of the Mumbai attacks is quiet possible.

The intelligence agencies had even pointed out several potential targets in Karachi and Lahore as well. Sources said that India was not happy with the Sri Lankan cricket team tour to Pakistan and India external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee had even pressurized the Sri Lankan government to cancel the tour. Former senior officers are also declaring India’s involvement in the incident. So far no local group has claimed responsibility.

Punjab Governor Salman Taseer while strongly condemning attack on Sri Lankan Cricket team has said that the terrorists who attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team here Tuesday morning were the same who had struck in Mumbai. Five escorting security personnel were killed and at least six Sri Lankan cricketers injured Tuesday when heavily armed gunmen attacked the team cavalcade when it was on its way to the Gaddafi stadium here for the ongoing Test.

“It was a planned terrorist act on the pattern of the attack on Mumbai. I believe the same terrorists are involved in both the incidents,” Taseer told reporters. Punjab Governor said that the terrorists involved in the incident are highly trained and all out efforts would be made to book the culprits and the search operation is underway.
Responding to a question, the governor said that the Sri Lankan team after the unfortunate incident was taken out from the site through helicopter, saying the condition of the players of tourist team is stable. “I myself is monitoring the operation”, added by governor. Taseer said that the Sri Lankan team was provided “VIP security. They had full security, otherwise worse would have happened. The security personnel fought back.” He said that though (former Pakistan president) General Pervez Musharraf had security, he was also attacked twice.

“A stash of arms and ammunition has been seized,” Taseer said, adding: “We are pursuing these people. We will get the perpetrators.” He went on to say that Pakistan was a victim of terrorism. Meanwhile Model Town police has arrested 4 suspicious persons and handed them over to CIA police. The terrorists were caught when they were involved in some suspicious activities while two other suspected terrorists
Meanwhile Member Senate Standing Committee on Sports, Senator Enver Baig and former Chairman PCB, Tauqir Zia have also condemned the attack on cricket team of Sri Lanka and ruled out involvement of any Pakistani in the incident. Talking to a private TV channel, they demanded of the government to take notice of the incident seriously as such incident tarnish Pakistan’s image in comity of nations.

Leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Raja Riaz and Qasim Zia have alleged that India can be involved in the incident, as it wants to prove Pakistan as a terrorist state.

well I think the PPP should be completely blamed for all this had they not changed the topp brass of our police force such carnage would not have taken place it is amazing that the event is a national political issue but I think that Salman Taseer should be sacked with immediate effect.

60 suspects arrested in Lahore terror attack

Lahore (IANS): As many as 60 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team here that left eight people dead and six players and their assistant coach injured as a case was registered against the terrorists.

The police raided markets in Lahore and recovered arms from several markets, Geo TV reported Wednesday.

"Bomb disposal squad also recovered dozens of hand grenades, explosive materials, five suicide jackets, Kalashnikov, and many bullets," the report said.

Three cars and a rickshaw believed to have been used by the terrorists' during attack were also seized.

The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against 14-15 unidentified armed suspects who carried out ambush attack on Sri Lankan cricket players. FIR was lodged on murder, attempt of murder and terrorism charges, sources told Geo TV.

Explosives, suicide jackets, bullets and hand grenades seized from 14 separate places were mentioned in the FIR.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik told reporters the terrorists came from three sides and trapped the Sri Lankan convoy.

Geo News reported that the intelligence sources had informed the Punjab government of the possibility of terror attack on the Sri Lankan team following which former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif had issued orders to step up security arrangements.

A committee has been constituted to probe into attack and a report, in this regard, will be filed within 24 hours.

On Tuesday night, candles were lit at Liberty Market crossing by representatives of civil society.

Bouquets and garlands were also placed there.

Terrorists armed with automatic weapons Tuesday opened fire at the convoy of the Sri Lankan cricket team as it headed for Lahore's Gaddafi stadium. A military helicopter later whisked the players to safety as Sri Lanka abandoned its Pakistan tour.

Six of those killed were police bodyguards meant to provide security to the team, while two bystanders also lost their lives as the terrorists spread mayhem in the area for almost 25 minutes.

A group of 12 gunmen carrying rocket launchers and grenades targeted the team bus about 500 yards from Gaddafi stadium, where Sri Lanka was to play Pakistan on the third day of their second cricket test.

The attack, being compared to the 26/11 Mumbai carnage, was the biggest attack on foreigners in Pakistan since the attack on Islamabad's Marriott Hotel last September in which the Czech ambassador and three American marines were among the 53 people killed.

Karachi City feels vibes of Lahore terror

* Citizens of Karachi fear their city might be next on the terrorists’ list

By Faraz Khan

KARACHI: Following the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, security has been beefed up in the city.

The city’s security personnel have been put on high alert and police and Rangers have been deployed throughout the city to avoid any untoward incident.

Sindh Chief Secretary (CS) Fazalur Rehman has asked the Sindh Home Department and the Sindh Police to ensure peace and harmony within the province of Sindh, keeping in mind the situation in certain parts of the country.

The concerned officials of the Sindh Home Department, Sindh Police and law enforcement agencies are now on high alert and are taking foolproof security measures to combat terrorism, on the directives of the high ups.

The CS called for making all out efforts to maintain peace throughout the province through close coordination with concerned departments, public representatives and reputed NGOs. Rehman stressed on greater security at and around bus stops, important roads, religious places, schools, parks, playgrounds and recreational spots.

He said that a strict eye will be kept on suspicious people and vehicles. He asked people to contact ‘15’ or approach the nearest police post or station in case of any emergency.

The CS directed that the control room set up at the home department and DCO Office be strengthened, patrolling be beefed up with a police flag march.

Law enforcers have started detailed snap checking and are taking all necessary actions while the intelligence agencies have tightened their network to avoid any untoward incident.

It is important to mention that the yellow taxi found from Liberty Chowk, Lahore bears a Karachi registration number, which further panicked the citizens of the city. Now people are afraid that Karachi will be linked to the Lahore bombing just like it was linked to the Mumbai attacks.

The people of Karachi, which is the hub of all commercial activities, now fear the worst for the city as the question coming to mind is ‘will the city of lights be the next target?’ The Lahore attack took place just 68 days after the world was rocked by the Mumbai disaster.

Further adding to the fear of the people is the fact that Intelligence agencies had already issued warnings to the government, saying that following the Mumbai attack Pakistan may see similar bloodshed.

Sources said that there is a high probability of such an attack repeating itself any where in the country, especially in Karachi and that the country is still under the threat of terrorism.

SSP CID Operations Fayyaz Khan told Daily Times that the terrorists couldn’t launch such an attack in Karachi as it will be very difficult for them. “The security arrangements and intelligence network in Karachi is very strong,” Khan explained. He added that the citizens should not panic and should trust the law enforcement and intelligence agencies as they have already been put on high alert.

Of course, in all probability if the Governor Raj hadn't been implemented and 90% of the police committed crowd control factors, and the reshuffling of all of the old security officials, this thing wouldn't have happened.

When the previous government of Punjab conducted the ODI's they followed a strict security procedure. We used to get annoyed by the traffic jams back then because they would close off roads for the SL team. These guys took them through public routes! These guys had no response team in place, these guys didn't change routes.

If it were up to me, I'd try them on the same charges as the terrorists who did this.

If that report, claimed to be issued on 22nd of January is not fake, I suggest the Security officials to frame that document and cling it in HQ office.

Why didnt the Panjab Govt. nor did the security department take counter measures against this immenant threat? Its just annoying and depressing. The federal govt. should make arrests in the provincial security department too. There must be 'rats' among them.

They should and I think the opposition would really hammer the nail in the next parliament session.

See in these matters I don't understand why people hate the Sharif brothers so much over the stock we have for options I think they are the best to lead the country and then maybe this way it will make parties sort their act out

By the way he was an accountant for the same firm my dad worked he couldn't be incharge of ten labourers and dissappear for breaks and this man incharge of Punjab god help us

LAHORE: Crime Investigation Agency claimed capturing as many as five suspects including two persons, accused of having involvement in Sri Lankan team assault, from Lahore and other cities of Punjab, Geo News reported on Wednesday.

The investigation staff of the Punjab Police arrested them amid a raid on a building in the Saddar area, sources said.

The sources said the personnel of the Joint Interrogation Team of the Punjab Police arrived in Karachi on Wednesday morning, as they had information regarding the presence of suspects involved in the Lahore attack.

The team left for Lahore later in the day. Salman Aslam adds from Lahore, “The recovery of a cellphone SIM from a bag, abandoned by the terrorists and seized by the police from the crime scene, has led to the arrest of its owner and his alleged accomplice from Kot Samaba, a town in Rahim Yar Khan, according to the police sources.”

The police have also taken into custody 24 other suspects, stated to be members of various banned outfits, from different parts of the city. The sources said the suspected terrorists — Babar Shahzad and teenager Dilawar Hussain — have been shifted to Lahore under tight security.

The main suspect is in his early 20s and he had been working as a guard at a cellphone company tower in Lahore until a few months ago. However, currently he is an employee of a flourmill. Except for the cellphone, nothing has been recovered from them, the sources said.

They said despite detaining and questioning over four-dozen people, The Lahore police are yet to make any headway in the probe into the Liberty attack. They said the sketches of the attackers have been made in the light of the eyewitnesses’ accounts, including rickshaw and car drivers.

Three cars and a rickshaw used by the terrorists during the ambush have also been impounded. The case has been registered against 14 to 15 unidentified armed men. Explosives, suicide jackets, bullets asnd hand-grenades, seized from separate places, have been mentioned in the FIR.

According to sources, suspects had been residing in Lahore for some days and were being assisted from various cities of the province including Lahore.

Investigation team narrowed search operations monitoring selective suspected places following the information they sought from various secrets sources and launched several raids. As a result, five suspects were nabbed on Wednesday, sources added.

Also, sources confirmed involvement of Indian spy agency RAW in Lahore attacks as per preliminary investigation.

It is likely that agencies will make available investigative report on Lahore attack within 18 hours, sources predicted.
