India's Republic Day celebrations peaceful in Kashmir

Republic Day parades passed off peacefully across the Kashmir Valley Wednesday even as seven Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists were arrested to foil the party's proposed flag hoisting march to Lal Chowk here.

Six activists were taken into custody immediately after they came out of a hotel near Lal Chowk and began walking towards the city centre. Another activist was arrested in Residency Road area adjacent to Lal Chowk when he appeared with a national flag and the BJP flag.

Security in and around Lal Chowk had been mounted since Tuesday to scuttle the proposed marches by the BJP and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Wednesday.

Authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar.

State finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather unfurled the tricolour and took salute at the Bakshi Stadium, the main Republic Day parade venue here, as smartly turned out contingents of police, paramilitary, civil defence and school children march passed the podium.

All roads leading to the venue were sealed and entry was highly regulated through special passes.

Cultural programmes were also held at the stadium after the parade in which cultural diversity of the state was highlighted by various performing groups.

"Dialogue and negotiations are the only way out of the present problem, and we appeal everyone to come forward and join the dialogue process," the minister said.

He highlighted the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led Congress-National Conference government, which completed its two years in office early this month.

All mobile phone connectivity across the valley remained suspended since morning as a security precaution.

Many times in the past, separatist guerrillas have carried out improvised explosive device explosions using mobile phones.

Impressive parades were also held in all the districts, with senior ministers unfurling the Indian flag.

No major untoward incident was reported in the valley though some black flags were seen in Srinagar's Old City areas in response to the separatist appeals to observe the Republic Day as a black day.

Curfew imposed in Srinagar and other towns

Srinagar, January 26 (KMS): Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world observed Indian Republic Day, today, as Black Day, call for which had been given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference and veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani. The Black Day was observed to convey to the international community that India’s continued denial of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination was contrary to its claim of being a democratic republic.

Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces were deployed in Srinagar and other towns particularly on all the routes leading to Bakhshi Stadium, where a brief official function was held. The authorities had imposed curfew in the territory to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations. The Clock Tower at Lal Chowk had turned into a virtual fortress with hundreds of Indian troops guarding its surroundings. All mobile networks were jammed across the Kashmir Valley to disable the use of mobile phones by people for holding anti-India protests.

Syed Ali Gilani and Shabbir Ahmad Shah were placed under house arrest and many liberation leaders were arrested when they tried to proceed towards Lal Chowk. Indian police thrashed journalists preventing them from performing their professional duties.

Addressing a seminar in London, the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that it had become imperative for the international community to intervene and stop Indian state terrorism. He demanded withdrawal of troops, repeal of black laws and release of Hurriyet detainees in occupied Kashmir.

The APHC, AJK Chapter, organised a sit-in in front of the United Nations Observers’ Office in Islamabad that was led by the Convenor, Mehmood Ahmad Saghar. A memorandum was presented on the occasion urging the United Nations to appoint a special representative for Jammu and Kashmir to assess human rights violations by Indian troops.

In Muzaffarabad, a procession was taken out and Kashmiri leaders maintained that the Kashmir liberation movement was destined to succeed. Hurriyet leader, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani addressing a seminar said that the only way to resolve the Kashmir dispute was to provide the Kashmiri people their inalienable right to self-determination.

So now Pakistanis love Facebook???
Do I need to remind them what happened a few months back when everyone got their color pencils for a drawing and coloring session??

Get out of facebook, and into the real world.

:argh:

Do you even know what that issue was? That was hurting the sentiments of billions of Muslims around the world. Hindus may tolerate their religious personalities being insulted in the name of "freedom of speech" but sorry, Muslims can't!

well, I'm not shocked at your STUPID response,
Bharati mentality cannot change!

Yeah,so don't try to change it.
Because with our unchangeable mentality Pakistan will keep losing to us and Kashmir will remain with us.

But when the same FB is used to create a page to make fun of your religion, its a sin, ha???

I don't even want to get into whose mentality is sick......
that's a level I don't want to stoop to just to reply to a troll....

interesting.......do note that every August 15 is marked a Black Day in Kashmir (both sides) every year

i think the fact that indians --seculer or hindu extemist -- cant go to sri nagar and freely wave their flag says a lot about realities on the ground. They never had Kashmir, it is no ''integral part'' of anything

very telling signs --though this is no new news it's been like this for generations
