India's Republic Day celebrations peaceful in Kashmir

BJP Leaders Held over Republic Day Flag-raising Plan
Senior leaders of the main opposition BJP have been arrested to prevent them entering Indian-administered Kashmir for a flag-raising ceremony.

Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar were detained as they crossed from neighbouring Punjab state late on Tuesday. The trio were released later.

Their attempts to hoist the Indian flag in Srinagar for Republic Day now appear to have ended, correspondents said.

The plan had prompted fears of violence in the Muslim-dominated Kashmir Valley.

Police said that six other BJP party workers were also arrested on Wednesday soon after they emerged from a hotel in central Srinagar.

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had appealed to the party to call off the protest.

'Provocation'

He said Republic Day - which he celebrated in Delhi by attending a military parade with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - should not be used to promote "divisive agendas".

The chief minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, had warned the flag-hoisting would provoke separatists.

Mr Abdullah invited the detained BJP leaders to come to Srinagar for the Republic Day ceremony, which was held amid tight security.

Separatist groups organised a shutdown throughout the Kashmir Valley and declared Wednesday as a "Black Day".

But the BBC's Altaf Hussain in Srinagar says the atmosphere on the streets remained peaceful.

On Monday, the three leaders were turned back at Jammu airport and sent by road to the neighbouring state of Punjab.

Along with some 500 party workers, they attempted to re-enter Indian-administered Kashmir again on Tuesday when they were arrested after crossing the state border. :sniper:

They were kept overnight in the town of Kathua and are due to appear in court on Wednesday.

The BJP has dismissed charges that it was playing politics over the ceremony.

"I don't understand what politics can there be in hoisting the flag... This is not politics but our duty," BJP President Nitin Gadkari said in Delhi. :-)rofl:)

The BJP's Arun Jaitley said there had been "a panic reaction by the government… It was a psychological surrender before separatists", he told reporters.

On Sunday night, a train carrying 2,000 BJP workers on their way to Kashmir for the flag-raising ceremony was turned around mid-way.

Overnight, railway staff at a station in Maharashtra state attached the engine to the rear of another train and sent it back to Karnataka.

wasnt the objective to hoist it AT Lal Chowk, AT the same place where a huge Pakistani flag was hoisted amidst cheering crowds?

''close'' to lal chowk --- great......and how much security reinforcements did you need for this very temporary, very short-lived "relief"

if it really were ''integral'' as you bhartis desperately cling on to and claim, then pray tell --- why would you need security and why would you need to arrest hindu extremists to prevent them from doing what was supposed to be a flag hoist AT lal chowk

It seems some people across the border wanted to see some more action on our Republic day as they saw last summer. The situation was tense and I believe it was the right decision by the state govt trying to prevent any more untoward incident.

BJP should have accepted Omars' offer and joined the official flag hoisting in Srinagar.

I actually wish BJP followed through :D

would have been interesting to see how that stunt would have transpired

especially at a time when angry Kashmiris are always saying "go india, go back"

^ Would have resulted in more vandalism and resulting firing and deaths... is that what you were expecting?

i'm expecting bhartis to wake up to the reality and accept it......they dont want you, your occupation forces, your "tri colour flags" or anything 'indian' in their lands

it's not hard to fathom

it's not hard to see the bold font writing on the wall

that is what I am expecting, though I know how difficult it may be a bitter pill to swallow for quite a few of your people

I know you guys would love to see another riot breakout right? Who cares if a few of those Kashmiris gets injured or killed as longs as we get our entertainment!

Actually I kinda agree with you --- we, the Indian state have till now been too lenient on the the Valley Muslims in the vain hope of winning their hearts and minds which is bound to fail. Why because this is not a political problem alone.I has become a conspicuous religious problem.

Time to remove the velvet gloves and show how it is done.

Enough of appeasing this separatists (sissies).

Desperation wreaks when the only way a nation incapable of securing a territory it so badly wants clings to a useless gesture such as a flag hoisting....Its pathetic that acts of vandalism have become a source of pride and achievement for our neighbors....

Nevertheless...we Indians are completely fine with Pakistanis feeling a sense of fulfilment that that cannot otherwise be complete other than in dreams....

Even with the elevated sense of achievement you people have, even you are well aware of ground realities and who calls the shots in Kashmir....
Enjoy the self fulfilling prophecy my Pakistani friends!
