The Russian-made INS-Chakra is the Indian Navy’s only operational nuclear attack submarine. The INS-Arihant, poised to be India’s second nuclear submarine, has cleared trials but is awaiting final clearance from the Indian Navy.

New Delhi (Sputnik) – A Russian nuclear submarine leased by the Indian Navy has been severely damaged in an accident and has not sailed for a month. According to ‘The Print’, the attack submarine is currently berthed at its home port of Visakhapatnam for repairs.

The sonar dome of INS Chakram, which has a submerged displacement of 12,770 metric tons suffered severe damage in an accident that occurred sometime in August this year, according to reports.

Sputnik tried to confirm the extent of damage to the submarine, but naval officials at Vizag did not divulge any substantial information despite repeated calls.

“Concerned officials have been engaged in the meeting since morning. We are not able to say more than this,” a naval officer who did not wish to be named told Sputnik.
Nevertheless, sources said that the sonar dome was damaged either while the ship was sailing off the coast of Visakhapatnam or while it was negotiating the narrow channel while entering the harbor.

“The sonar dome is thhe protective cover of the sonar-eyes and ears of the ship, which is located in the bow of the submarine just below the torpedo tubes. The time taken to repair it will depend on the extent of the damage. We should wait for an official statement on this issue. But, yes, if the submarine receives any damage, it is a very sensitive issue,” Commander Abhay K Singh (Ret.), a research fellow at the Military Affairs Centre in the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi told Sputnik.

The Indian Navy had formally inducted the nuclear-powered submarine into its fleet in April 2012 on a 10-year lease from Russia at a cost of approximately $900 million.

Eight Indian Navy Subs Running With Single Periscope: CAG Report

Undue delay of 34 months in issuing of necessary approvals by the Ministry led to delay in installation of periscopes on board the submarines during their planned refits. Consequently, the Indian Navy was forced to exploit the Sindhughosh class of submarines with the existing periscopes with its limitations for at least 22 to 62 months till their next scheduled refits," CAG noted in its report.

And this is Modi ministry!!!!

Marine maintenance is not a top priority, wining election is.

NEW DELHI – India’s only operational nuclear-powered submarine, INS Chakra, has reportedly suffered some damage in an accident and could require substantial repair work to get it back in shape, according to Indian media.

It is not known whether it happened while sailing off the coast of Visakhapatnam or while negotiating the narrow channel while entering the harbour. The Hindu reported that the sonar dome, which is located in the bow of the submarine beneath the torpedo tubes, was damaged

INS Chakra is based at INS Virbahu, the submarine base in Visakhapatnam, and will be ready to sail after repair work which is likely to be complicated given that the sonar dome is made of titanium, a difficult metal that requires both specialised machinery and manpower to work on.Reports in the media suggest that the damage could be the result of either a collision at sea or accidental scraping while entering the harbour. The Indian Navy refused to comment on the incident.

The Akula-class attack submarine (SSN) is on a 10-year lease period from Russia and is the second nuclear sub after the indigenously built INS Arihant. Though INS Chakra is a nuclear submarine it does not carry any nuclear-tipped missile.

Taken on lease in 2012, the vessel has a displacement of 12,000 tonnes. It is powered by a 190 MW reactor and can reach speeds of over 30 knots. It is manned by 80 crew members and is equipped with tactical missiles, a new fire control systems, sonars and contemporary optronic periscopes and surveillance systems.

Originally named as K-152 Nerpa, the sub was handed over to the Indian Navy in 2011 and was commissioned as INS Chakra.

It was basically inducted to serve as a training ground for officers and crew who would later handle India’s indigenously built SSBN INS Arihant class of nuclear submarines.

. . . .
Not a matter to laugh..it could have been serious and deadly for entire region...

.
India needs to take care of its submarines... too many submarine accidents in the recent past

.
Meh.
Bottom scrapping is very common for submarines, so it is not even regarded as a level1 incidents.

Last year there were far more serious incidents involving British and American nuke submarine.

1) British nuke sub HMS ambush collided with a merchant ship.

2) US SSBN collided with a fellow US navy ship.

Don't they have radars to guide them or can't take make the channel a bit wider at entrance. Both are feasible.
