Bangalore: The foundation stone for a first-of-its-kind helicopter academy, a joint venture of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and CAE, was laid on Monday, carrying forward the contract that was signed in March this year.
The 240-crore 'Helicopter Academy to Train by Simulation of Flying (HATSOFF)' will offer comprehensive training to civil and military customers operating four helicopter types: the Indian Air Force variant of the HAL-built Dhruv, the civil variant of the Dhruv, the Bell 412 and the Euro-copter Dauphin. The centre is expected to be operational by 2010.
The academy is expected to train around 400 helicopters, and generate Rs 80 crore, every year. Speaking on the occasion, director (HR) of HAL Sanjeev Sahi said that this facility would be the first- of-its-kind, once operational. "The academy will offer Level-D simulator training to helicopter pilots and maintenance personnel. It will also provide a complete 'service offering' for our military and civil clients of the Dhruv helicopter," he said.
The academy will be a joint venture between HAL and CAE. It will have a CAE-built simulator featuring its revolutionary roll-on/roll-off cockpit design, which enables various helicopter cockpits to be used in the simulator. The training centre will feature multimedia classrooms, computer-based training, briefing/debriefing facilities, and a training management information system.
