Robin Singh Indian to coach team in Pakistan Super League

Robin Singh represented India in 136 ODIs and a single Test before taking up coaching as a fulltime profession.

By: PTI | Karachi | Updated: September 29, 2015 9:42 pm

PCB has roped in former Indian all-rounder Robin Singh to be on the foreign coaches panel and manage one of the five sides in the upcoming Pakistan Super League T20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Robin, who represented India in 136 ODIs and a single Test before taking up coaching as a fulltime profession, is perhaps the only Indian who will be part of the PSL, which is to be held between February 4 to 24.

After retiring from cricket in 2004, Robin took up coaching with the junior teams of India and eventually became the fielding coach of the national side for two years from 2007 to 2009. He later went on to coach Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League as well.

According to the list of foreign coaches, who will be assigned to the franchises, there are many big international names like former South African coach Micky Arthur, Andy Moles, Chris Adams, Chaminda Vaas and Gordon Greenidge. Najam Sethi, who is heading the ambitious PSL project, said the PCB has negotiated with 15 coaches who have agreed to be part of the PSL. “Until now 15 coaches have agreed to be drafted into PSL’s pool and we’re still in talks with other top coaches and cricketers. So more names will be revealed in the next few days,” Sethi said. The former Chairman of the PCB also said to ensure that foreign and local players don’t have any complaints about their pay packages the board would be asking the franchises to submit surety amounts before the start of the league and the PCB itself would pay the players and coaches.

“We don’t want a repeat of what has happened in some leagues. We want to ensure PSL is organised smoothly. The main aim is to ensure that foreign players, coaches have only good things to say about our league.” Sethi added that the participation of foreign players and coaches will benefit domestic cricketers, who will not only share a dressing room with the best in the business but also bolster their finances in the process. He said the domestic players will also benefit a lot from the PSL with emerging players guaranteed a minimum fee of 25,000 US Dollars while other senior local players can earn from 50,000 USD onwards.

Earlier, PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan made it clear that the board wanted to organise the PSL in Pakistan and also contacted other boards and foreign players, but the response was not very encouraging due to security concerns. “That is why we decided to go ahead by launching the PSL at a neutral venue but we are pretty sure that by next year or afterwards the PSL will also organised in Pakistan,” he added. - See more at:

Former Indian cricketer to participate in Pakistan Super League

former Indian cricketer Robin Singh will be one of the coaches in the first season of the PSL.

Robin Singh is aware of the current demands of the T20 format as he has successfully coached an Indian Premier League side, Mumbai Indians.

Apart from Robin Singh, other former cricketers such as Chaminda Vaas and Gordon Greenidge will also be part of the PSL. Najam Sethi, (PSL) Governing Council chairman, has stated that they are still in talks with some top cricketers and coaches.

"Until now 15 coaches have agreed to be drafted into PSL's pool and we're still in talks with other top coaches and cricketers. So more names will be revealed in the next few days," PTI quoted Sethi as saying.

The mega T20 event, organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board, will be held in the UAE from 4 to 24 February next year. Doha in Qatar was initially declared as the venue, but the organisers got things sorted out and declared the UAE as the venue for the 20-day event. The UAE was always the original venue before Qatar.

They could also have hosted the PSL in Pakistan, but foreign players were reluctant to play due to growing security concerns as a result of which they were forced to look for some neutral venue.

"That is why we decided to go ahead by launching the PSL at a neutral venue but we are pretty sure that by next year or afterwards the PSL will also organised in Pakistan," said PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan

The PSL seems to be moving in the right direction as they have already signed some bigplayers such as Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo, Luke Wright, Shakib al Hassan, Lasith Malinga, Sunil Narine and Angelo Mathews.

With such high-profile players, the PSL, hopefully, can attract viewers from all around the world. Five teams from Quetta, Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore and Islamabad will battle it out in the first edition of the tournament.

The mentality of a common Indian on PDF--------> Nepal puts them in place and common Indian here "Oh my guard is going back now", "Oh my kam wali is going back". With such a mentality can I ever expect most of these Indians to be happy about any positive development coming from my country? No way they are narrow minded ill wishers of everyone else in this region. They are like No Doltiay, newly rich people with high inferiority complex and insecurity.

Pakistan Super League vs Indian Premier League vs Big Bash

Finally Pakistan is going to launch its professional Twenty20 cricket tournament under the title of Pakistan Super League (PSL). After successful completion of first episode, PSL will become the “premier cricket league in Pakistan”.

PSL is just like Indian Premier League (IPL) and Big Bash. The work started on PSL in 2013, however, due to lack of sponsors and logistics issues it postponed for many time. Just like IPL, there will be also a proper auction system and foreign players will be given equal opportunities just like domestic players. Up to now over 100 international players from 9 countries have signed the consent forms and over 17 international coaches have also signed the consent forms.

Most of the cricketers have belief that PSL will turn out to be a major tournament and the signs are good that success will come to this lucrative T20 event.

If the PSL ended with clean hands and without a single case of match fixing and corruption, then it would replace the IPL in two to three seasons. IPL first season was attended by 7 Pakistani cricketers. But BCCI has restricted its players to not participate in PSL.

Why PSL is better than IPL?

One thing is apparent from current structure of IPL that having lot of teams is nnot means a successful ending. Pakisan has decided to launch with five teams that is a good step. IPL statrted with 11 teams and now it is at 8 teamas due to mismanagment.

PSL comprise just 24 matches as compare to over 50 mathces of IPL. Each team will get to chance in the tournament. This will make the PSL more effective than IPL as the viewers will not get bored as the tournament will be of one 21 days only.

World best cricketers, captains and the winning coach of the field are going to be the part of PSL that is simply a smart move by PSL.

PCB has followed the format the Caribbean Premier League. There are five categories for the players interested in being part of PSL — Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver and Emerging. So, no chances of discrimination between local and international players.

Oh yes what happened to India's new found love with UAE? There was so much noise and hopes for that newly found love, and wishes that UAE will teach Pakistan this and that, embarrassing hugs of Modi could not convince them to stop hosting our cricket events eh?

LoL, India's great diplomacy coup in UAE, has run out of gas. Pakistan Super League not only will be held in same
Dubai cricket stadium where Modi addressed, but also will be held at Sharjah. .. lolz eternal humiliation for Indians continues, isn't it?

This is how India failed in UAE, a massive clear evidence.

Actually the balloons of their delusions are over-inflated. And you know problem with the balloons is they burst if excessive air is pumped in them. :enjoy: "Agar hath say na lapait sako to bahi pankhay pay phaink dia karo in ki lambi lambi lapaitny k liay"

You already decided PSL is greater than IPL even before playing a single match! IPL started with only 8 teams in 2008. get your facts right mate.. India is 7 times bigger than Pakistan, so we need more teams.

Next time you will claim that Pakistanis in UK and U.S. are there at the request of these Nations :p:

People go to other countries if they find better opportunities :-)

yes genius it goes both ways, US and UK needs them and they need better paying jobs. If Pakistanis get same pay in Pakistan then they wont go and If US and UK dont need them they wont let them enter....not very smart, are you

Why is Najam Sethi head of PSL

Wasn't he like a news anchor/ Conspiracy theorist on Geo TV as far as I know

It's like Arnab Goswami hosting the IPL and shouting The Nation wants to know

How can you rejoice on this !!

Dont you see the utter humiliation of no nation wanting to send players to Pakistan & the utter hopelessness of having to run tournaments outside your country & call it your own ?!!

As far as I know BCCI has forbade Indian players from playing in PSL.
