Although only a yard switcher ('shunter' in India), this Genset loco (using diesel power generation units) is possibly the single most important loco in Indian Railway because it is a harbinger of the future. Genset locos use two to three 700 or 800 HP power generator sets which can ramp up or ramp down the amount of electrical power supplied to the traction motors, as needed. This results in fine-tuning the amount of fuel consumption and emissions when idling or at lighter loads. Genset Locos were developed by the Union Pacific Railroad (US) around 2005 and most of them are seen operating around the port of Long Beach. There are around 150 of these types in UP inventory and equivalent numbers in other larger US Railroads. Gensets are by design far more efficient than locomotive prime-mover engines.

The West Central Railway in India has been running trials with this first Genset loco WDM2G (the 'G' suffix is a giveaway of the Gen-set type). This locomotive was rebuilt from a WDM3D by DMW Patiala. It has three 800 hp Cummins QSK-19 engines and a maximum speed of 105 km/h. Two WDM2Gs have been produced (Nos. 80000 and 80001) and are both assigned to Itarsi Junction in Madhya Pradesh.

Fuel consumption is expected to be 20% lower than a conventional locomotive and emissions are significantly (~30%) lower. However Genset locos are several times more expensive than regular locomotives (about three to four times more in India, six times more in the US). This is so even when the loco is a rebuilt unit. There's more info here at DMW.

one of THE most scenic railway routes in India. Also host to some scenes of SRK Deepika hit 11042 :-)

IR has been working on reducing its specific fuel consumption for diesel locos and while new generation Genset locos offer much better fuel consumption values, the actual road map of future is to use IGBT based traction electronics to derive most optimal power from powerpack for the loco. India at present has a fleet of close to 3,000 locos based on ALCO 251 engine that uses AC-DC transmission and these are quite outdated as far as emission norms and fuel consumption is concerned. Our sole Diesel loco producer Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) Varanasi has therefore ramped up its production of 3 phase AC-AC 4500 HP Diesel locos based on EMD technology and it is proposed to phase out atleast 50% of ALCO derivative locos by end of decade and employ 3 phase technology only.
It offers higher HP at economical rates but as far as branch line and light weight services (short rakes) are concerned, we can expect to see more Genset locos in future.
