Its good that we are focusing on surface ships but should not forget the submarines too.

That's the amazing part, when the world's eyes are focused on Indian Navy's increased induction of surface ships, we are slowly but steadily increasing our submarine arm:

1. Currently 14 Diesel electric submarines are in IN.
2. 1 Akula sub on lease with possible induction of another (so 2 total).
3. 6 scorpene class subs on order, with all possibility of ordering further 3 (total 9).
4. 6 P-75I subs to be given green signal in a year or so.
5. 5 Arihant Class subs.

so in a decade or so IN will be consisting of around 25 subs (diesel, SSBN, SSN).

Isn't is possible within the next 10 years we'll commission atleast 1 new S-5/I-12 SSBN for sea trials? That's

yes, IN has ordered 3 more follow-on (3rd batch) of krivak-4 frigates, as far as destroyers are concerned the answer is "no" as India is building it's own destroyers - P-15A & will follow it up with P-15b, so a clear no to Russia for destroyers.

Nope, you're factually incorrect.

The P-15A Kolkata class destroyers are in an advanced state of completion, in fact the only reason that they aren't undergoing sea trials yet is because the Indo-Israeli air defense system (barak-8) meant to be fitted on them got delayed. The first ship of the class will be inducted this year. Three were to be built and all three are nearly completed. Below is a picture showing all three ships of the class in advanced stages of completion and this picture is two years old.

After that 4 more P-15B destroyers will be constructed, we were able to meet the construction timeline on the P-15A, the delay was caused by the Barak system- which being completed this year will ensure timely completion of the P-15B project.

@Nishan_101 IN has inducted 6 Talwar class frigates from Russia- that was the no. planned and that was the no. ultimately adhered to. No more purchases of that class or any other Russian frigate are now planned. The last ship of the Talwar Class, the INS Trikand, is already in the process of formal commissioning. The designing process for the P-17A has been completed by the IN's NDB and the concerned Indian shipyards, price negotiations are almost complete and metal cutting will start by November at the latest.

The three Kolkata Class Destroyers were capped in because ship building and designing is an evolutionary process and not stagnant. the P-15B will feature a flush deck and the ability to operate with LRCMs, the Kolkata Class on the other hand will be the stepping stone- while being a complete product in itself it will lead to the even more stealthy P-15B, the same case applies to the the P-17 frigates made by India which were capped at three ships so that the heavier and more stealthy P-17A could be pursued- which are derived from the P-17 itself.

Yes. and along with this GOI has introduced modernization in yards whcih will speed up ship production, reducing building time by 40 to 50%.

This is MDL’s new Rs 826 crore “modular” shipyard that is expected to slash down the time taken to build warships for the Indian Navy. Defence shipyards currently take over ten years to build major warships like destroyers, frigates and corvettes. When the new yard is commissioned in June 2013, frigates will be built in 60 months; destroyers will take 72 months.
