Indian Navy gets its biggest offshore patrol vessel

Second NOPV INS Sunayna commissioned

INS Sunayna, the second of the NOPV (Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel) class of ship was commissioned at Kochi today by Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command.

INSSunayna, to be based here under Southern Naval Command is built at Goa Shipyard Limited, and will meet the increasing ocean surveillance and patrolling requirements of the Indian Navy.

The warship is designed to undertake fleet support operations, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance and monitoring of Sea Lines of Communications and offshore assets, and escort duties.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral Soni said that the shipbuilding process continues to be one of the most challenging tasks starting from design to integration of diverse equipment prior final setting to work and delivery of a seaworthy combat platform.

The Admiral complimented Goa Shipyard Limited and all agencies who contributed to the building of INS Sunayna. He also reminded the audience that India’s location makes the country a pivot around which activities of the strategically important Indian Ocean would unfold. Platforms such as Sunanyna would enable the Indian Navy to secure the national interests in the region.

Two KOEL/Pielstick Diesel engines propel INS Sunayna and enable it to achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots. The ship also has an automatic power management system installed by M/s Larsen and Toubro. She is fitted with the latest Navigation, Communication and Electronic Support Systems.

The armament fit include one 76 mm Gun with an electro optic fire control system, Close in Weapon Systems (CIWS) and CHAFF launchers. INS Sunayna can also carry a helicopter. Commander Aftab Ahmed Khan, the Commanding Officer of the ship leads a crew of 8 officers and 108 sailors who are accommodated in ergonomic cabins, which provide greater crew comfort with improved management of space.

Earlier on arrival, Vice Admiral Satish Soni inspected a Guard and was then introduced to the ship’s crew. Vice Admiral KR Nair, Controller Warship Production and Acquisition, Indian Navy, Commodore (Retd) PK Shrivastava Director , Goa Shipyard Limited and a host of dignitaries attended the event.

Commander Aftab Ahmad Khan has been appointmented as the CO of this ship. And with little modifications it can be converted into a light frigate.

they should also carry unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) like Camcopter S-100 for search and detection --- Russia Rubin-class patrol boat carry a license-built version of Camcopter S-100.

Plus i also wander, why they dont carry any SAM system?

anti-ship missile system KH-35
SAM
UAV for search and detection

Warship INS Sunayna commissioned


Kochi: INS Sunayna, the second of the naval offshore patrol vessel, was commissioned here Tuesday, to help with ocean surveillance and patrolling requirements of the Indian Navy, said Vice Admiral Satish Soni.

INS Sunayna would be based here under the Southern Naval Command and is designed to undertake fleet support operations, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance and monitoring of sea lines of communications and offshore assets, and escort duties.

To be fair madam, such deployments have only become the norm in the past 2-3 years. The IN will be deploying such assets within the next 4-5 years for sure.



Wrt the KH-35, this is purely an off-shore patrol vessel and is purposely under-armed for its size, it is not meant to be an offensive asset. However, in wartime this vessel class can play a role and can be outfitted with offensive firepower most certainly.

sometimes I wonder why India builds Frigate sized OPV for Coast Guard,apart from the fact that they need a long endurance to patrol long Indian coast line..but I think these OPVs can carry a lot weapons more than what they carry.as we see INS Sukanya,which carry 1 x 40 mm, 60-cal Bofors anti-aircraft gun,2 x 12.7 mm machine guns,2 x 25 mm, 80-cal anti-aircraft guns as well as 1 Dhanush ballistic missile,and it was a 1900 ton ship.we can surely armed them with something like Klub(for attack)/Barak(for self/air defence) for sure in the time of war,even though that isn't their role,don't you think guys???

In future they might get armed with Brahmos?

I don't think that is likely. Recently the IN/MoD had floated a RFI for 80-100 km ranged missiles. Those may find their way here. Coupled with an additional Search Radar. Then they will become more potent in their role of Patrol/Escort Ships which is largely a defensive role. I do not see them getting the role of the Corvettes which are more Offensive in nature

I sometimes wonder about the ship level specifications IN has...all the shops on the respective categories are out sized...
