Indian Navy commissions third UAV squadron

CHENNAI (PTI): Indian Navy on Wednesday commissioned its third Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) squadron in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, a move that would enhance the coastal security along the East Coast.

Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command, commissioned the INAS 344, known as 'Spirited Shadower' which will be based in INS Parundu.

The squadron would be operating the Heron and the Searcher MK II vehicles, a defence ministry release said.

"These aircraft with long endurance and stealth capabilities are ideally suited for search and detection. The commissioning of the UAV Squadron will provide value addition to the surveillance capability of the Eastern Naval Command and augment the efforts at enhancing Coastal Security along the East Coast," the release said.

The earlier two UAV squadrons of the Indian Navy are based in Kochi and Porbander.

Undoubtedly. Initially one based in the region of Paradip-Balasore and later around Kakinada. These will cover the Eastern seaboard very effectively. These bases can be IN/ICG operated and should be capable of operating Dorniers also when comissioned. So they can be upscaled when necessary.

Just as the ANZAs could in various drone and helo attacks so far.

On-topic now: The IN is using these UAVs to set up another layer of coastal surveillance. The outer-most layer being the LRMRs (Tu-142s, Il-38s and later P-8i aircraft). the second with the projected MRMR and innermost with the Dorniers and UAVs. Needless to say, there is a fair degree of overlap, so it can be seamless in coverage. And if those Grumman Global Hawks enter the picture, it'll even get better. Not to mention the dedicated Naval satellite/s in the offing.

This will happen in time (as early as Q2 2013 AFAIK) but uptil now the impetus was on getting each naval command one SQD of UAVs which is achieved with this induction, IN can now move on to giving individual commands extra resources as it sees fit.

Right now its less about distributing assets to various commands but more about creating infra-structure to support those assets. The assets can be created/stockpiled pretty rapidly now. Building the infra will take more time.

True, this- of course- is happening at an ever increasing rate but the need to distribute assets dictates the setting up of infrastructure. It's not about cart before donkey.

Of course. But are'nt the UAVs (like other aircraft) mobile assets? They can be placed/shifted anywhere as required based on operational needs. There are'nt enough spaced out air-bases to increase the operational options. That will need some time to set up. But work has certainly begun.

I see what you mean. You are correct there is a lack of bases equipped to handle multiple types of platform at present but the IN is moving ahead so it is now only a question of time before such additional options are made available.
