Fearful Muslims adopt Hindu IDs

Toronto Star

CALCUTTA–On a busy street in Calcutta's business district, he runs a food stall called "Rajib's Paratha" and is known as Rajib Mallick.

Using the popular Hindu name, no one suspects he is Rajab Ali Mollah, a Muslim who has adopted a fictitious identity to blend in with the neighbourhood's mostly Hindu office workers.

Sohrab Hossain, a Muslim student who came to the city to complete his Masters degree in English and lives in a Hindu-dominated housing complex, is known as Sourav Das among the students he tutors. To keep up his Hindu appearance he has a small idol of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, on his desk.

Every morning as she prepares to go to work as a fishmonger, Hasina Khatoon takes off her silver armband embossed with "Allah" in Arabic, puts vermillion powder on her forehead and red-white conch bangles on her wrist – symbols of a married Hindu woman – to maintain a Hindu appearance in a fish market where almost all of her customers are Hindus.

Rajab Mollah, Sohrab Hossain and Hasina Khatoon say they have adopted new identities in a Hindu-majority society where as Muslims they would face discrimination.

Analysts say many Muslims from all socio-economic backgrounds are quietly hiding their religious affiliation.

"Muslims in almost all spheres of life face a communal discrimination by powerful Hindus and they are denied many of their basic rights and freedom in an unjustified way," said Anjan Basu, a social analyst and executive editor of Pratidin, a Bengali daily in Calcutta.

Six decades after Partition, "many (Hindus) believe that Pakistan was created for Muslims and now they do not have right to live in India, which is meant for Hindus."

The Partition of India 60 years ago was a highly controversial arrangement, and remains a cause of much tension on the subcontinent today.

Basu, who is a Hindu, also said discrimination has been "institutionalized," with many Muslims being denied employment in government and private-sector offices where 90 to 95 per cent jobs are held by Hindus.

Gautam Ray, a senior journalist with Calcutta's largest Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika, said that since the bulk of the dalits (low-caste Hindus or so-called Untouchables) converted to Islam when the religion spread in India, many upper-caste Hindus look down on Muslims as they had for generations looked down on dalits.

"The root of this communal discrimination is deeply entrenched in the society and most of these communal Hindus are not expected to change their feeling for Muslims any time soon," said Ray, who is also an upper-caste Hindu. "Muslims are often denied housing in Hindu-dominated modern residential complexes," he added.

"This communal discrimination against Muslims will not end unless Hindus themselves change their attitude. But we do not see hope of any such positive social change anytime soon."

Muslims who adopted fake Hindu identities believe they did nothing wrong by hiding their original identities.

"Ten years ago, when my house and land in the village was eaten up by a river and I came to Calcutta in search of a job, almost all street shops and restaurants in the city refused to employ me because I was a Muslim," Mollah said.

"Some said their Hindu customers could refuse to eat at their restaurants if a Muslim worked there," he said.

"But I met a Muslim man who worked under a Hindu identity to supply water to restaurants. I followed his advice, picked up a Hindu identity and soon an upper-class Hindu employed me to run a food stall."

Nearly all of Mollah's customers are Hindus and he fears his business would suffer disastrously if his customers found out he is a Muslim.

"I don't think I have done anything wrong because I know how they hate Muslims simply because of their religion," he added.

A federal commission recently found that Muslims "live in socio-economic conditions worse than many so-called backward tribal people," according to commission chief Rajendra Sachar, a former judge.

In the state of West Bengal, where the Muslim community makes up 27 per cent of the population, employment of Muslims in the government sector was below 3 per cent, the Sachar Commission reported.

Some Muslim leaders see education as the key to a better future.

"If the younger generation can educate themselves, it will be difficult for even the most communal Hindus to discriminate against a new Muslim force," said Nazrul Islam, a senior public servant and noted Calcutta writer.

"Maybe discrimination will not be wiped out completely, but an educated and powerful community of Muslims will be able to fight off the injustice, at least to a good extent."

.
This is my city and I know it better than anyone else here. The report claims too many things and tries to justifies too many things,

1. Partition was the cause Calcuttians look down on Muslims - WRONG, They Enjoy HEAVY freedom here but their leaders are heavily corrupt, the owaisis of hyderabad have done good for their community where the leaders here havent, INFACT my own places head is a Muslim, Nazim Ahmed.

2. Gives reference to Sacchar report - The report's Implementation of Quota strata has been declared UNLAWFUL by the APEX court the report if full of quota politics and undue reservation. please dont go to reservation.

3. Low Caste Hindus converted to Islam so Higher Caste looks down upon the Muslims and does not gives them jobs - WTF! , even the Businessmen marwaris of kolkata have issues with the Bengalis. Convertions has nothing to do with JOBS. higher Caste Hindus providing authoritian style sweat shop jobs? what kind of joke this is or this is a movie? Yeah it must be the upper caste hindus who must be controlling each sweat shops making parathas or rasogullas in every street corner or controlling perhaps the nimbu pani shop near the stations, seriously! This has become a new form of psy ops from the Western elites, I cannot by any means grasp or understand how come brahmins (assuming they are referring to them) give jobs to these guys when the number of sweat shops all around is probably 100x times more than the number of brahmins in whole of calcutta!

4. The level of poor in Calcutta is NOT limited to any community. West Bengals HRD is pathetically bad and has deteroited hugely. West Bengal has HUGE disparity between rich and poor YOU literally got to SEE IT to believe, it faces HUGE INFLUX of illegal workers and is a bastion of black trade.

5. Representation of Muslims in government et al - AGAIN a Wrongly reported overtone Muslims in West Bengal are a sizable party and has GOOD representation in the government without their vote the government WOULD FALL the govt is here for 33 years, problem is their party leaders forms the voice of all type system means one leader and many follower, they lacks diversity among themselves nor they wants to carry out the ground based reforms needed for villages.

6. Lastly this report does not mentions how many of illegal labourers and black economy in Calcutta runs paralelly you GOT to see it to believe it khidderpore dock , howrah station to what not, Heck If you want I can take pictures of bangladeshis admitting being illegal workers and living in hiding from police.

Go and see Andhra Pradesh. I dont doubt the condition of Muslims in West Bengal is bad than many other states but to claim, It is Hindus who discriminate against Muslims, does not gives them 30 bucks per day sweat shop jobs and looks down upon because they were lower caste is PURE BS.

Their own community and their OWN leadership here is at fault, Its easy to put the blame game and ask for 30% Quota , how much percent of that TRULY goes to the deserved and deprived?

What a great victimisation card used again to justify Quota politics, NSSO report must be wrong then! How come their household income become same, oh I forgot as if sweat shop working peoples regardless of anything is actually going to get use the 30% quota and enroll in education go to college, 15% of 30% gets resderved for management seats, pay and study. zeez.

They need to stop sending their kids to madrasas and stop waving the red flag for over 30 years, one of maths guy I knew works with Al Ameen a muslim welfare trust here that deals with proper education, you will be surprised to know the urge of their parents for madrasa education over schools.

Isnt it ironic living under communism and still being poor compared to other states? anyways I just re-read the report the report on discrimination of muslims living in hindu household that they are keeping saraswati idol is horse$hit, I know hundreds of such guys who stays here on university mess and nothing as such I have EVER came across.

On the other hand I have came across Muslims who DELIBERATELY keeps murthis of some Indian goddesses in their home or chinese feng shui et al for their complete own reason.

Selling fish with vermillion powder in forehead because hindus wont buy from her? HAHA thats probably the best psy ops I have heard for a while :hitwall: , surely I go daily to fish markets and I have never came across women selling fish with vermillion powder over forehead it seems simply out of reality of what I have seen, but pan yes they chew lots of pan.

.
From where is the article quoted.

If the article has said anyother state other than Bengal at least you could have defended it. By naming bengal where the communists rule, there is hell no chance for this to happen. Communists are the best bet against relegious extremism.

.
this is the true picture of india, no such thing you ever heard about Pakistan. the only salution to this problem is to work on the two nation theory basis, i am not saying that they should come to Pakistan i am just saying that they should work hard to get the independence from the cruel hands of indians as Pakistan did...

You didnt fight with India for independance, it was mutualy agreed across the table. Dont twist facts.

.
Its heartening to see our fellow Pakistani members show so much sympathy for Indian Muslims. But then the question arises, if the muslim brotherly feeling is go genuine, how accepting would they be if Indian Muslims, all 140 million of them, chose to migrate to Pakistan ?

If your sympathy is rooted in genuine love for muslims and Islam, then you should not have a problem right ? If you do have a problem though, and say that instead of coming to Pakistan, Muslims should carve their own homeland, is it because all that 'muslim brotherhood' is a dirty facade under which you hide your intentions of dismembering India ? Is it because even though you profess love for fellow muslims and Islam, you are ready to sacrifice them both on the alter of national and racial politics to satisfy your ego ? By the way, you are not alone in this thinking.

Will Pakistan happily accept Indian Muslim migration inside its borders ? On your answer shall depend the proof of your sincerity. I will wait for the replies.

Rehman I am from Calcutta and it is the most tolerant city and very pro Moslem.

It has gone to the extent of madrassa education being made equivalent to high school.

Therefore, that is a very doubtful story.

What is the link?

BTW most meat sellers are Moslem and all butchers who slaughter are Msolems and it is hallal meat no matter what one says.

But to fill space one can spin anything.

Indian Muslims adopting Hindu names to avoid prejudice

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Members of India’s large Muslim minority often adopt Hindu names and dress styles in an attempt to avoid widespread prejudice that keeps them from housing and jobs, a Washington Times online report said on Tuesday.

Shaikh Salim, a Muslim who runs a food stall in the central office district of Calcutta, uses the common Hindu name Shankar Maity and calls his stall “Shankar’s Fast Food”.

Shaokat Ali, a Muslim student who came to the city for a master’s degree in English, tutors Hindu students using the name Saikat Das and keeps a large picture of the Hindu goddess Kali hanging on a wall in his room. Jahanara Begum takes off a silver talisman embossed with “Allah” in Arabic each morning, replacing it with a spot of vermilion powder on her forehead and red-and-white conch bangles of a married Hindu woman before heading to work in a fish market, where she is known as Parvati — the name of a Hindu goddess.

Analysts say there could be thousands of Muslims in Calcutta who, like these three, are quietly hiding their religious identities in order to fit in, the newspaper reported. “In everyday life, Muslims in almost all spheres of life face a communal discrimination by powerful Hindus, and they are denied many of their basic rights and freedom in an unjustified way,” said Anjan Basu, a veteran social analyst and executive editor of Pratidin, a Bengali newspaper in Calcutta.

Six decades after Pakistan was carved off from British-ruled India, many Hindus believe that Pakistan was created for Muslims and that is where they belong, said Basu, who is a Hindu.

He added that communal discrimination has been “institutionalised”, with Muslims being denied employment in the government and even many private sector offices, where 90 percent to 95 percent of the jobs are held by Hindus. Many Muslims who adopted Hindu identities say they do not feel embarrassed because of their actions.

“Fifteen years ago, when I came to Calcutta in search of a job, almost all street restaurants in the city refused to employ me because I was a Muslim,” said Salim. “Some said their Hindu customers could refuse to eat at their shops if a Muslim worked there. But soon I met a Muslim man who worked as a cook in a Hindu-owned restaurant under a Hindu identity. I followed his advice, picked up a Hindu identity, and soon an upper-class Hindu employed me to run a food stall,” he added.

Nearly all of Salim’s customers are Hindus, and he fears his business would suffer disastrously if his customers found out he was a Muslim.

“I know that [many Hindus] hate Muslims simply because of their religion. So, I have done nothing wrong by lying about my religious identity,” he said.

Ali, the 24-year-old university student, is troubled by his decision to hide his faith but says he had little choice after 29 guesthouse owners refused to rent him a room because of his religion. He intends to drop the pretence as soon as his finances improve.

“It pains me that I cannot tell people that I am a Muslim,” he said. “I am restlessly waiting for the day when I shall be able to get out of this religious guise.” Some analysts worry that the deep-seated discrimination against Muslims could ultimately drive them to violence.

“As Indian Muslims strongly feel they are being unjustifiably denied their share in developing India, their grievances could snowball into severe anger against the state and society, forcing many to resort to terrorism one day,” Basu said. But for the time being, the realities of the workplace mean that many Muslims will continue to hide their identities.

In the state of West Bengal, where the Islamic community makes up 27 percent of the population, Muslim employment in the government sector was less than 3 percent, according to a recent federally mandated study by former Judge Rajendra Sachar.

A federal minister acknowledged last week that Muslims have been victims of “religious apartheid”, both in the government and in society at large.

Discrimination against Muslims “is in the polity and the populace of the country. Worse, many of them have been implicated in fake charges of terrorism,” said Kapil Sibal, the minister of science and technology, who is a Hindu.

But then media has to sell and so what is a little bit of lies to show some to be "Sneaky little bastards" so that the paper remains relevant amongst the gossip hunters!.

I am from Bengal and I have not seen any Moslem hiding his name.

.
Daily Times doesn't have to "sell". It is true that hate among Muslims and Hindus in some parts of the countries do exists, and then Bengal is not so small.

.
Webmaster,

I am so pleased to know that you have visited Bengal and know all about it!

If Bengal is not small, then I presume UP is!

Stories can be made over nothing. And no media is beyond spin!

There is irrational hate all over the world including Pakistan. So?

Does it mean that we consume ourself with hate?

I would be rather beyond that!

My pet name is Salim, one of my brothers in law is Rustam. I quite proudly answer to the name Salim. Nothing to be ashamed of.And what is there to be ashamed about in any case?
So, what does Daily Times have to say to that? That India is shedding secularism for Islam?

.
BTW if anyone show prejudice to my pet name, he will surely get the biggest physical kick of his life on his posterior!
