What's new

Indian AWACS thread

well it will be good for IAF but still we need more steps in modernization to counter china and Pakistan at same time

we need more things

china is still ahead in numbers and we have to do the things in best way our all projects should be complete on time its very critical time for Indian force and next 5 years will be very important for India

when DRDO made AWACs will be there to augment the PHALCONs ,we too will have good numbers...plus numbers dont matter much in these things..quality matters..

But atleast our airforce and navy is modernizing in a good time like
1:Nuclear sub marine for navy
2:Mig 29 k squadron along with one AC and 1 is under construction
3:for AF MMRCA is waiting
4:sign for 5th Gen fighter
5:more AWACS...

But my really concern is for our army

am not seeing any kind of all out war that will use our airforce and navy , because once that situation reaches it will end with nuclear calamity for sure [thanks to our neighbour for their first to use policy]

i can expect only proxy wars and at maximum kargil like misadventures from our neighbour , so who is going to fight for us it defenetly not AF and navy it will be our army..... in that case

1:are we going to fight with our artillery that purchased in 80s..?
2:still our army is going to carry 10kg Bullet prrof jackets in the mountains.?
3:are we going to use our INSAS as primary weapon in our future....?
4:are we going to use the same old mortar that used in WW2..?

still our MOD dont have a clear roadmap for our army modernization...

i know FINSAS is coming , but i can not see any improvements and deadline for that project

Sorry for going Offtopic...just my thoughts

India receives second AWACS, to be deployed in Agra

India today received the second of the three contracted Israeli-made Phalcon Airborne Early Warning and Control System at the Jamnagar air base, giving it the second 'eye in the sky' for enhanced surveillance capabilities.

The second AWACS arrived in Gujarat from Israel in the evening and will be deployed in Agra, IAF officials said here.

With the arrival of the second AWACS, officials said the IAF can keep an eye on both the eastern and western front at the same time and with the induction of the third system, expected later this year, virtually covering the entire nation.

The system, primarily used for detection of incoming hostile cruise missiles and aircraft from hundreds of kilometres away, can also direct air defence fighters during combat operations against enemy jets. It also helps detect troop build-up across the border.

The AWACS from Israel are being procured under a 2003 deal worth USD 1.1 billion.

The tripartite deal also involved Russia as three Phalcon radars are to be mounted on Russian-make IL-76 heavy-lift transport aircraft, of which the first was delivered in May last year.

The AWACS aircraft are operated by the Agra-based 50 squadron and after the induction of the first system on May 28 last year, they have been carrying out extensive flying operations with frontline fighters such as the Su-30MKI, Mirage-2000 and the Jaguars.

The AWACS also took part in the recently-held major exercise codenamed 'Vayushakti' and controlled the flight operations of over 100 aircraft participating in the massive fire-power demonstration.

India and Israel are said to be in advanced negotiations for the purchase of three more Phalcon AWACS, which the IAF proposes to integrate with other air and ground assets.

All six AWACS would be linked with the country's first military satellite, proposed to be launched by the middle of next year.

India receives second AWACS aircraft

English.news.cn 2010-03-26 11:12:06

MUMBAI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The second Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft acquired from Israel by the Indian Air Force (IAF) have landed, India's media reported on Friday.

The Second AWACS arrived at Jamnagar air base in the western Indian state of Gujarat Thursday evening, and will be deployed at Agra air base in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the news agency Press Trust of India quoted an IAF official as saying.

With the arrival of second AWACS, the IAF could boost the aerial patrol capability by covering the eastern and western part of India at the same time, said the official.

Like the first AWACS, the second one could detect and track dozens of flying objects from more than 300 kilometers away, including hostile fighters, bombers and cruising missiles, and direct its anti-aircraft units to intercept the incoming flying targets.

According to the contract signed with Israel in 2004, the IAF will get three Phalcon AWACSs, of which the first was delivered in May last year.

The IAF could provide air patrol by covering the whole nation as the third AWACS arrives later this year, the official added.

However, the speed of AWACS is quite slow, and need the protection of fighters and anti-aircraft missiles from the ground.

As the third AWACS reaches, India will become one of the few countries which have three advanced AWACSs. Such countries include the United States, Russia, China, Britain and Japan.

Israelis themselves don't have 3 AWACS  And they don't need as well. Given their size, one AWACS can monitor 5 Israels :agree:

The first & the second photos are of the first Falcon, plz note Ex ACM F.H.Major boarding the plane after the Raksha Mantri, the current ACM P.V.Naik following him.The third & fourth are of the second platform being flight tested at Ben Gurion Airport Tel Aviv, Israel.
