Indian AWACS thread

No, actually its not a surprise
i have heard before also Israel is expecting IAF to order more Radar system to be placed on either A50/other air-frame
number was 6 more which i read - total 9
this news says total 6
Why do we always place small orders and then keep on increasing, Is it that we purchase without fully testing and then when we are satisfied increase order.

Its obviously in the wish list of IAF and of course I won't be complaining at all if we go for six or for that matter 60.. But i think we are going to get only 3 and we won't be going for the Russian plane (IL 76 i mean) in future.. May be I'm just plain worng.

Could some one enlighten me how we going to get six AWACS and what is the time line.. i guess its not going to be another painful 10 years :(

Its so good news for IAF.. their capability just got a tremendous boost..

The first deal was for 3 + 3 optional, so if we go for 6 now it just took the option. More can be procured later too, but why limit our possibilities now? By the time number 7-9 would be produced, better platforms could be available too, or it will only be 6 on A50, but more on the Gulfstream 550 that Singapore bought too.

India is set to place a follow-on order for three more AWACS systems and is seriously considering American Gulfstream, Brazilian Embraer jets and European Airbus. An official said, “We will replace the IL-76 by a modern aircraft like the Gulfstream or Embraer. Both have an endurance of nine hours - that is close to what the Russian aircraft has”. But selecting any of these two aircraft will have the problem of having too many platforms in the inventory, as the IAF will have to maintain separate maintenance line for each type of aircraft. The IAF is already considering Airbus A330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) for an order of six more mid-air refuellers as the IAF found MRTT far better than IL-78 in the crucial flight evaluation. In case the IAF selects Airbus MRTT for both the orders then this the issue of having too many platforms in the inventory will be resolved.

IAF seeks more AWACS

NEW DELHI, Apr 1: The Indian Air Force has projected a need for more Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) to enhance its capability to counter emerging missile threats in the skies and waters around the country.

India has inked a 1.1 billion dollar deal with Israel to purchase three Phalcon AWACS mounted on Russian Il-76 aircraft, and the IAF has now asked the Government to clear the induction of up to five more aircraft.

With each aircraft capable of mounting surveillance for up to 14 hours with in-flight refuelling, the AWACS will extend "strategic reach" far beyond Indian airspace, IAF officials said.

Under the Phalcon deal, New Delhi has an option to acquire three to five more AWACS from Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) that would be delivered during 2009-12.

India will receive the first of the three Phalcon systems by September and the remaining two by 2009. The IAF has trained about 250 personnel in Israel for operating the complex systems comprising sophisticated radars and sensors. In addition, 450 personnel have been trained to man ground facilities for the AWACS systems.

DRDO, which recently reviewed its indigenous airborne early warning (AEW) programme, has submitted to the Government a proposal to develop a system costing 500 million USD. The project was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in September 2004.

But the DRDO project, which envisages mounting an Indian system on a Brazilian Embraer aircraft, has not found much favour with the IAF, as the jet does not have a flight endurance of 10 hours and cannot cruise at altitudes above 40,000 feet.

IAF officials said the new system will only have a range of 300 km and a surveillance arc of only 240 degrees. The force wants the DRDO project, whose delivery schedule has already slipped from 2012 to 2016, to be turned into an "airborne battlefield surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance system".

The officials said the DRDO system would be an additional prop for the main Phalcon AWACS system. The DRDO system could thus be used to undertake real-time surveillance of the ground battlespace over a span of 120 km and a depth of 80 km.

"It would provide a network-centric scenario to the army, Navy and IAF," an official said. DRDO is using a L-band radar derived from the Rajendra radar developed for the Akash surface-to-air missile.

The IAF officials said the induction of more Phalcons systems as would help the force create theatre-based airborne command and control posts for airspace surveillance and management tasks.

Six to eight Phalcons could be used for round-the-clock surveillance across the country, they said. (PTI)

India's initial order was for 3 AWACS but another order of 3 is expected and most probably in talks right now.

Radar are ready and can be bought now but the aircraft are being delayed on which they are to be mounted. So I see all 6 by the year 2014.

bro, i wanted to ask abt networking linking in IAF
I believe MIG+Sukhoi have Glonaas support and network communication is non-nato type
While jags+mirage+mrca will have GPS and communication system quite close to NATO std ,
Our AWACS are western - I have a doubt how su are going to be linked to them,
who will do it .
Can sukhoi's data on board will be transmitted through awacs to our MRCA planes

I prefer the IL76 (A50) over gulfstream. I don't know why, but may be it LOOKS SO MUCH COOLER on IL-76.:sniper:

AWACS is basically a very powerful flying radar. It can track even the minute flying objects in the sky. Furthermore, it can linkup with fighter aircraft to guide them about the enemy fighters and missiles. Also it can guide the missiles to their targets.

Its like networking. Million possibilities open up with an advantage like this.

Technically speaking A330/gulfstream have definite advantages
More stay in air , more sophisticated , not sure about crew members.
I also think IL76 cant Buddy refuel or Boom refuel from IL78 tanker.
Economical is only advantage but it gets negated when you consider fuel consumption.

That's an interesting point that I was curious about too, but it is very hard to get good infos about this AWACS. It is clear that the Russian fighters can't be linked with the western fighters just like that, Red Flag proved that, where our MKIs was more or less blind. The Phalcon radar of course will be western, but don't forget that the A50 is not just a normal aircraft with a mounted radar, it is the complete Russian AWACS aircraft, with the difference mainly in some systems and antennas. My guess is that we kept those Russian data links and added western with the Phalcon system too, maybe the Phalcon system is even compatible for both, Israeli systems was often on offer for our Russian fighters. Both is possible and likely, because IAF won't limit themself with an AWACS that supports only one half of the fleet, but I can't tell you how it will work yet.

Hehe, agreed, but we have to keep in mind capabilities and specs too right? The G550 is said to have a range of 10000km, the A50 around 6000Km if I'm not wrong and it is on offer as shore bases
AWACS for IN, so a bigger order of these later could add commonality in systems and platforms.
