BrahMos software being modified, says Dr Pillai news

14 February 2009

Tiruchirappalli: The software of the BrahMos supersonic missile is being modified so that it can meet Indian Army requirements, according to a top BrahMos Aerospace official.

"The software currently used was not adequate for hitting short distance targets. We have now modified the software. Simulation tests are on and the software is being validated," BrahMos Aerospace chief executive officer Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai told reporters here.

The BrahMos is a unique supersonic cruise missile with a 290-km range and a 300 kg warhead. It has been tested in various versions including sea-to-sea, sea-to-land and land-to-land. In its latest version a new guidance system was being tested which failed because of glitches in the software. BrahMos authorities immediately announced they had nailed the problem and a new test would take place. This test has been scheduled for 20 February.

Dr Pillai also said the air-to-air version of the missile would be inducted into the Indian Air Force as scheduled by 2012. The air version would be compatible with the Sukhoi 30-MKI platform. Necessary alterations in the auircrfat had already been made by the Sukhoi design bureau.

A high-level committee comprising officials from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the IAF, and the BrahMos Aerospace were in discussions about the induction of the air version. According to the tentative programme, the drop trial of the missile from aircraft would be done in 2010. "The flight trial to hit the target will be taken up in 2011 and the induction will be done by 2012," Pillai said.

He said the company had also successfully reduced the weight of BrahMos airborne version from three tonnes to 2.5 tonnes.

He also said the scientists were getting ready to launch the missile from a submarine.

As for export of the system, Dr Pillai said 14 countries had been identified by the firm as potential candidates for the supply of the missiles but the decision would be taken by the Indian and Russian governments.

He said the company wanted to produce 50 to 100 missiles per year at its Hyderabad unit and the proposed unit near Thiruvananthapuram.

DRDO has decided to testfire the supersonic test
18 Feb 2009, 0727 hrs IST, TNN

DRDO has decided to testfire the supersonic test missile, BhrahMos, in Pokhran Field Firing Range at Pokhran on February 20.
The BrahMos testfire had on January 20 failed due to failure of hydrate system at the last moment, last month. According to the defence source, the scientist have rectified the error by placing a modifier software in a missile for its smooth test.
Defence scientists are working to develop such modifiers for its easy use by Indian Army and Airforce in future. Army chief, Deepak Kapoor along with senior officials will be present at Pokhran on the day of test.

BrahMos missile test postponed

The field test fire of surface-to-surface missile BrahMos has been postponed. Sources say DRDO called off the test at the last moment since technical hitches were noticed.

Last month, a similar test carried out by the army had failed due to a software glitch in the missile. Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor had rejected the induction of Brahmos in the Army until all drawbacks were rectified.

Friday's test was supposed to have been carried out by DRDO alone.

The test fire was to take place today at around 1000 hrs in the Pokhran firing range. The exact reasons for the postponement are not know.

The tests are being conducted to address and rectify the lapses in the missile launch carried out on January 20.

Army test-fires BrahMos again

JAISALMER: The Army on Wednesday successfully test-fired the land attack version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from the Pokhran test range in
Rajasthan. The missile took off successfully and hit the "bull's eye," an official said. The missile, a joint venture of India and Russia, was fired at 9.15 am on Wednesday. The previous test-firing was on March 29, 2009.

"The missile took off successfully and hit the desired target at Ajasar area range situated 25 km away from launching pad, meeting all mission parameters," a source said. This is the fouth test-firing this year for the block-II version for the Army. In the first test, the missile failed to hit the target.

"With this launch, the requirement of Army for the land attack version with block-II advanced seeker software with target discriminating capabilities has been fully met and this version is ready for induction," the source said. The missile will provide an enhanced capability to the army for selection of a particular land target among a group of targets.

The launch was witnessed by director general, artillery, Lt Gen. K R Rao, along with DRDO and other senior army officers. Some other senior scientists were also present during the launch.

The Army has already begun inducting the land-fired version of the BrahMos, with the first battery entering service in June 2007. Each battery is equipped with four mobile launchers mounted on a heavy 12x12 Tatra transporters.

The missile, which takes its name from the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, has a range of 300-km and carries a 300 kg conventional warhead. It can achieve speeds of up to 2.8 Mach or nearly three times the speed of sound.

I agree with you friend. i think pakistan fooling its people. How many times do we hear pakistani weapons are junk? Infact whenever news comes that indian weapons are junk than it should be bad news for u pakistan and china because than india will replace it with more newer and leathel weapons. Anyway back to topic about brahmos II. i will be honest this brahmos is more than a match. By standing in a way of incoming brahmos and saying its a failed missile wont stop brahmos missile to melt human bodies. Its pin point accurasy and the speed is unmatchable. Simply 'worlds fastest and deadliest missile' is Brahmos.

The last test was a failure because the GPS shut down, Can any one confirm this..

And what modification have been made this time to prevent this ?
