But that is scary. For all our rivalries, India has had some VERY sensible leadership in the past who were well educated and well read. These were not blood thirsty people and were quite astute in their understanding of the world and sane in their decisions; usually Pakistan was one that was foolhardy. Now it seems that the role is reversed, where you had brilliant Indian statesment like Vajpayee, Swaran Sing, Jaswant Singh were true gentlemen and men who knew statesmenship, diplomacy and politics. They knew where to draw the lines and where to say what. They were the creme dela creme of India civil service, Politics and in general.

Now, it seems like India has scraped the bottom of a fish barrel for its cabinet positions.

How do you know "for sure" that he did say such a thing--I am specifically talking about references to religion? I have seen this trend in recent times,a lot of things are twisted and reported in a manner to suite particular agenda-this has not happened for the first time with Defence minister.A lot of times,his statements were twisted to portray him as religious fool--but those who know him would disagree.
As for current indian leaders--some of them are really top notch--just because you havent done your homework about what they have "implemented" doesnt mean the roles between india and pakistan have reversed. Just take the case of Current Defence minister--he is a graduate of IIT-B(metallurgical engineer)-79 batch.He has himselves pushed a lot of research projects to completition which were either almost shelved or taking too long under previous defence minister. Some of the notable projects that I can think right now are Advanced jet trainer and DRDO's 155mm/52cal gun system. AJT had spin related issues and was difficult to recover from a stall which was dragging the development--he not only pushed them to iron out the issues but put the jet for trials. Same was the case with LCA. There are a lot of other "not-so-tangible" changes that he has brought along particularly those related to bureaucracy--mind it this is the most challenging task. He has made it easier for indian private firms to get involved into high tech defence R&D and manufacturing that was limited to PSUs. He was also the one who pushed for 49% FDI in defence. He is the one who galvanized the production of 155mm/45cal gun systems at OFB's gun carriage factory jabalpur.Not only that,in just 2 years,they have a 155mm/52cal prototype ready for field trials(kindly note that this 155mm/52cal system is different from DRDO's ATAGS that happens to be also 155mm/52)

To Indians, they were some sort of god's army. I believe it's rude and insensitive to refers to other people's gods in international discussion. But if it's India politicians that brought it up, all bets are off.
