What's new

Indian Army gets first batch of Sig 716 assault rifles

forces equip their soldiers for the nature of their mission and the area they are operating in, in hotter and humid areas you will see soldiers wearing half sleeves shirts with basic vest and helmet, similar to that uniform cameo changes as per terrain as well.

US made? I thought some Indian firm made that. At first glance I was really impressed.
I have an old question. Why don't you guy start license production of some standard rifle? I mean, resources is not a problem for you. Engineers are there. Heavy R&D machinery is there. Why you guys still buying?

The simple reason was its kickbacks ( defence officers, diplomats and politicians) that they have kept the arms industry totally import-based, current govt. is promoting the local industry and they are getting boost.

A tavor costs like many times of INSAS ( so it's easy to make money )
For future, L&T, TAS and Kalyani group and the going to be torchbearers.

Many small industries are also coming up

VEM technologies -https://aviationspaceindia.com/content/vem-technologies-pvtltd

Cron systems: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRON_Systems
PLR:http://plrsystem.in/about-us/about-us.html

Bottom line is now govt promotes locals so now slowly the infra is getting ready for some good defence products to come out.

It is heartening to see the the huge expansion of private industry entrants into the Indian defence manufacturing eco system. If back handers were the reason for choosing foreign suppliers then these Indian manufacturers will be just as adept as the foreign suppliers, of that I have no doubt.
Having said that my Indian chest thumpers must realise that a huge quantity of stuff manufactured by defence PSU's was sub-standard, very late in delivery, lacked proper quality control and extremely dated by the time delivery took place. PSU's also appear to lack the ability for large scale manufacture, delivering very limited quantities over a given period of time, leading to unit costs way above comparable foreign products.
Defence manufacture is a fast moving feast. You have to be nimble, quick on the uptake of new developments and be ale to deliver a quality product in large quantities with consistent quality control.

Learn to Under promise and Over Deliver. Only then will India's defence industry reputation grow. DO NOT DO THE OPPOSITE, OVER PROMISE AND UNDER DELIVER.

You do know that the Pakistani troops helmets in this pic are all equiped for night goggles right? You do now you have shot yourself in the fit here by posting this. The Indian troops on LOC appear to have no NVG attachment aids on their helmets. Do you understand what that means?

All SF have access to the best weapons in every army. Nothing special. 2% of Indian army have decent weapons is not much of a boast
1st pic from 2014
2nd & 3rd from 2018
4th, 5th, 6th from 2015-16
7th is of BSF from 2017.

While Brens will remain with army till end of June 2021 (delivery of all 16400 Negevs will be completed by then).

Number of machine guns issued to an infantry battalion is 40-42.
Which means the 16,400 Negevs ordered are sufficient to replace Brens with all 385 infantry units.

As for Sterling not a single one is with Indian Army since 2017. I can challenege you won't find a pic of a single army soldier equipped with Bren post 2017.
