What's new

India will become permanent member of UN Security Council: Sushma Swaraj

Throw that logic in the garbage bin, as far as we are concerned, India has been an active part of the world war 1 & world war 2. There have been substantial contributions to the allied forces. If one goes by the logic that is (regrettably) in was a colonial state under the British rule, so it has more association & qualification to be under this requirement.

India didn't exist in 1945. Tell me how do you give a P5 seat to a country that does not exist?

As far as I am concerned India should just say screw the P5 & UN & continue with development and pursue her interest's. China being on the P5 is the joke of millennia, the worst offender of human rights records, an exorbitant amount other issues it does not comply with. It's a farcical having it there on the world stage.

Good. Then ask India to stop begging China for an NSG seat and a UNSC seat. :P

Point 1: India did exist (princely state's as you would call it), it was not formalised - just like how China is made up of provinces with its dynasties ruling them - till the time it was known as China.

point 2: We don't care, we have a waiver! so it's not like we are missing out!

You are lying to yourself if you believe that India was independent before 1947.

In all honesty, India shoud have a seat on the council based on it representing a significant portion of the world's population and soon global GDP. but is currently not mature enough to be qualified for one.
That's not how the world work. Permanent seat in UN based on historical and modern day power.

there is a whole block of countries opposing any such move about increase in permanent members.
and UN is not ICC.

Read the post above, and stop reinventing the wheel.

Since you Chinese folks out there love your history and make all your territorial claims based on the assumptions on dynasties that ruled your lands likewise, then I am sure you pay attention to the Indian side of history.

The last paragraph would make a lot of sense to your tall claims that, India was not known as India prior 1947 to rubbish!

Magadha, ancient kingdom of India, situated in what is now west-central Bihar state, in northeastern India. It was the nucleus of several larger kingdoms or empires between the 6th century bce and the 8th century ce.

The early importance of Magadha may be explained by its strategic position in the Ganges (Ganga) River valley, enabling it to control communication and trade on the river. The river further provided a link between Magadha and the rich ports in the Ganges delta.

Under King Bimbisara (reigned c. 543–c. 491 bce) of the Haryanka line, the kingdom of Anga (eastern Bihar) was added to Magadha. Kosala was annexed later. The supremacy of Magadha continued under the Nanda (4th century bce) and Mauryan (4th–2nd century bce) dynasties; under the Mauryan dynasty the empire included almost the entire subcontinent of India. The early centuries ce saw the decline of Magadha, but the rise of the Gupta dynasty in the 4th century brought it once more to a position of preeminence. Not only did these imperial dynasties begin by establishing their power in Magadha but in each case Pataliputra (adjacent to modern Patna) was the imperial capital, thus adding to the prestige of Magadha.

Lively accounts of Pataliputra and Magadha are available in the Indica of the Greek historian Megasthenes (c. 300 bce) and in travel diaries of the Chinese Buddhist pilgrims Faxian and Xuanzang (4th–5th and 7th centuries ce). Many sites in Magadha were sacred to Buddhism. Toward the close of the 12th century, Magadha was conquered by the Muslims.

There was only one requirement to become a UNSC P5 member... to have been a major independent power on the Allied side of WW2 in 1945.

That's all.

India did not exist in 1945, so they did not qualify. And Britain already had a P5 seat.
Yes, the status quo of UNSC is a direct results of WWII. During WWII, the United Nations became the official term for the Allies. To join, countries had to sign the Declaration and declare war on the Axis.
  1. The earliest concrete plan for a new world organization began under the aegis of the US State Department in 1939. "Four Policemen" was coined to refer four major Allied countries, United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and Republic of China, which was emerged in Declaration by United Nations. On New Year's Day 1942, representatives of Allied "Big Four" - President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, Maxim Litvinov, of the USSR, and T. V. Soong, of Republic of China - signed a short document which later came to be known as the United Nations Declaration and the next day representatives of twenty-two other nations (Note: France wasn't there) added their signatures.
  2. The Cairo Conference, held from November 22 to 26, 1943, were attended by the three countries of US, UK, and China.
  3. The Yalta Conference (Crimea Conference, Argonaut Conference) held from February 4 to 11, 1945, were attended by the three countries of US, UK and Russia. The serious differences and broad-span conflict of interests (e.g. Mongolia) between KMT-led-China and USSR inhibited bilateral dialogue, and US became a mediator between the two.
  4. The United Nations was formulated and negotiated among the delegations from the Soviet Union, the UK, the US and Republic of China in Dumbarton Oaks Conference. On October 7, 1944, the delegates agreed on a tentative set of proposals (Proposals for the Establishment of a General International Organization) to meet these goals. The discussions at the conference regarding the make-up of the United Nations included which states would be invited to become members, the formation of the United Nations Security Council, and the right of veto that would be given to permanent members of the Security Council. Charles E. Bohlen writes that the Dumbarton Oaks Conference "settled all but two issues regarding the organization of the United Nations—the voting procedure in the Security Council and the Soviet pressure for the admission of all sixteen of the Soviet republics to the General Assembly. Apparently, it never occurred to anyone on the U.S. side to counter with a proposal that all 48 states be admitted to the General Assembly. It took the conference at Yalta, plus further negotiations with Moscow, before these issues were solved." At the United Nations Conference on International Organization, also known as the San Francisco Conference, in April–June 1945, the Security Council veto powers were established and the text of the United Nations Charter was finalized. The heads of the delegations of the sponsoring countries took turns as chairman of the plenary meetings: Anthony Eden of Britain, Edward Stettinius of the United States, T. V. Soong of China, and Vyacheslav Molotov of the Soviet Union. At the later meetings, Lord Halifax deputized for Mr. Eden, V. K. Wellington Koo for T. V. Soong, and Mr Gromyko for Mr. Molotov.
  5. The UN officially came into existence 24 October 1945, upon ratification of the Charter by the five (France was then included) permanent members of the Security Council.
  6. Republic of China was replaced by People's Republic of China in 1971, Soviet Union was replaced by Russian Federation in 1991.
