Pakistani and Indian forces have exchanged fire at an international border post in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, violating a ceasefire agreement.

The exchange of fire took place in Samba district of the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, about 45 kilometers southwest of Jammu, on Wednesday.

The incident lasted for 45 minutes, and was followed by a second ceasefire violation in less than 24 hours.

According to an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) official, the Pakistani troops fired at Indian pickets in Ramgarh, a sector of the international border in Jammu and Kashmir.

The BSF, therefore, plans to hold protests against Pakistani rangers, NDTV reported.

Indian troops also said Pakistan violated the ceasefire at the Line of Control (LOC) in Poonch district of Jammu on Tuesday.

No casualties or property damage has yet been reported.

New Delhi and Islamabad reached a ceasefire agreement along the Jammu and Kashmir frontiers back in November 2003.

The Indian Defense Ministry has reported that since 2006 there have been more than 150 ceasefire incidents, with 50 of them in 2010 alone.

Pakistan violates ceasefire again

JAMMU: Violating the ceasefire yet again, Pakistan Rangers fired indiscriminately and targeted an Indian border outpost in Samba district with rocket projectile grenades in the wee hours on Wednesday.

"There was heavy firing and attacks of Rocket Projectile Grenades (RPGs) on Ballard BOP along the International Border in Samba sector around 0430 hours," Deputy Inspector General, BSF, G Oberoi said.

BSF troops guarding the border took positions and retaliated resulting in a fierce exchange, which continued till 0530 hours, he said.

There was no loss of life or damage to property in the cross border firing and rocket attacks, he said, adding firing and RPG attacks were resorted to from Lahri Kalam area close to Imran Sheed post of Pakistan.

This was the third ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops this month.

On December 2, Pakistani troops had targeted several Indian posts twice with mortars and rockets and fired indiscriminately along the LoC in Poonch.

Armed with heavy guns and rocket launchers, Pakistani troops shelled Kirpan, Kirpan one, Chajja, Kranti, Ghoda, Nangi Tikri, Mandol forward posts along LoC in Krishnaghati sub-sector of Poonch district from 1315 to 1400 hours and 1430 to 1800 hours on that day triggering panic among border residents.

BSF 59 Battalion deployed along the IB, officials said retaliated to the ‘unprovoked’ firing by the Pakistan Rangers.

The exchange of fire lasted for over 10 minutes. However, no reports of any injury were received.

even though cease fire agreement was signed in 2003, 2-3 incidents like this do happen every month.
