India 'too late' in artillery modernisation: Army chief

India has been "too late" in acquiring modern artillery and needs to accelerate its efforts to modernise its firepower in an era in which advanced nations have gone far ahead, the army chief, Gen. V. K. Singh, said Monday.

Singh, who assumed office March 31, said though Indian artillery was in the process of major modernisation, the induction of more powerful guns like 155mm/52 calliber guns of the ultra-light, wheeled and self-propelled varieties was not proceeding at the desired pace. "Are we not late vis-à-vis other modern artilleries," he asked while addressing the Third International Seminar on Artillery Technology organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

He stressed that it was "imperative" that India modernised its artillery systematically to compete with the best in the world. "While other advanced nations have leapt far ahead in the field, we are still lagging behind." The army chief cautioned that any delay in this regard would render the gap between the frontrunners and laggers "impossible to be narrowed" down. "We certainly need to catch up, and catch up fast.

We have to take much longer strides and accelerate our efforts," he added. Citing the example of some artillery equipment, like the Smerch Russian-made multiple rocket launcher, that is still in the process of induction, the army chief said: "The so-called modern weapons are, in fact, already in the process of replacement in the developed countries.

Smerch has been in service in Russia since 1990 and we are still inducting it in our army." "Such a state is disturbing and most unwarranted, and merits urgent rectification," he added. Singh said India also needed to upgrade its existing equipment to make it "akin to the state-of-the-art, and provide it with extra life".

He also sought more interaction between the armed forces and the DRDO, India's premier defence research organisation, for the development of better artillery and missile technology to make the country's defence self-reliant. "Such concerted and coordinated efforts would surely lead to a technologically modernised Indian Army in a foreseeable future. However, such an approach can only be successful if there is a high degree of understanding amongst the partners," he said, cautioning that "an element of ego in any of the partners" will a "great setback" to the partnership.

The army has been waiting for 23 years for new field guns and at long last, in January, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified the country's Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to India of 145 M777 155mm ultra-light howitzers with Laser Inertial Artillery Pointing Systems (LINAPS) and associated parts, equipment, training and logistical support for a complete package worth approximately $647 million. The Indian Army, however, is yet to take a decision on another 250 towed and self-propelled 155mm guns.

The army had purchased 410 Bofors 155mm howitzers in 1986 but the deal was mired in corruption charges and the name of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was dragged in. The Supreme Court eventually found no wrongdoing but the taint stuck to Bofors, as a result of which it was not considered for a new order. The gun had performed admirably during the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan but only some 200 are operational now due to normal wear-and-tear and cannibalisation.

and u knw wht the worst part is..there still isnt enough urgency on MOD'S part to acquire the guns quickly....get over with the trials n place the order...

i wonder why cant we go for a joint venture to produce our own artillery guns???

See I knew it.
Not just artillery.
The entire troops.
The army is just really bad equipped.
Like really bad.
Its big but they need better toys..
Ofcourse it will be expensive.

.

india's not at war with anyone.

ya exactly....who cares for the soldiers living n dying in subdued condions ....babus homes(read palaces) and swiss banks shall be filled with money:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Don't get frustrated buddy, be COOOOOOOOOOOOOOL:yahoo::azn:

.
if we do go ob a fishing expedition through swiss banks we will find out that half of the 1.5 trillion $ of cash stashed by indians belong to politicians specially the likes of Mayavati , lalu, mulayam

.
Seminars, meetings, committees, lectures, articles, RFI, RFP, trials and various other BS but you will not see a new modern artillery for next five years at least, welcome to Indian Army.

Thanks to DRDO they renewed work on Bhim and also there is new short range guns from OFB.

.
if we look in to our airforce and navy ,it is modernizing in a good time like
1:Nuclear sub marine for navy
2:Mig 29 k squadron along with one AC and 1 is under construction
3:for AF MMRCA is waiting
4:sign for 5th Gen fighter
5:more AWACS...

But for our army........ nothing new

am not seeing any kind of all out war that will use our airforce and navy , because once that situation reaches it will end with nuclear calamity for sure [thanks to our neighbour for their first to use policy]

i can expect only proxy wars and at maximum kargil like misadventures from our neighbour , so who is going to fight for us it defenetly not AF and navy it will be our army..... in that case

1:are we going to fight with our artillery that purchased in 80s..?
2:still our army is going to carry 10kg Bullet prrof jackets in the mountains.?
3:are we going to use our INSAS as primary weapon in our future....?
4:are we going to use the same old mortar that used in WW2..?

still our MOD dont have a clear roadmap for our army modernization...

i know FINSAS is coming , but i can not see any improvements and deadline for that project

just my thoughts..........

.
Well thank GOD.........we are on track
2019 all atry will be replaced by 155 mm.
Love them M1A5 SP Howitzers damn.LOL

Mate our navy and air force are way ahead of army but our Army has better technologies than our adversaries. But they are still way behind than what we need. Specially in terms of artillery and tank.

In all out war or navy and air force will be more dangerous for enemy than our army. Because they can go deep inside and destroy enemy's land, air and naval assets. That will reduce chance of nuclear war and lower burden on our army.

i can expect only proxy wars and at maximum kargil like misadventures from our neighbour , so who is going to fight for us it defenetly not AF and navy it will be our army..... in that case
Our army is much much more than enough to fight any kind of proxy war. Kargil is over, technologies have changed, no more Kargil.

1) Our army lacks modern artillery capabilities though currently we are still enough for enemies. But we need to get up-to-date systems. Army bought M777 from USA, OFB built various short range advanced artilleries, Bhim project revived.

But I think we need longer range artillery.

2) They are developing many BPJ for F-INSAS as well as private companies also have many solutions. Indian army is working on it. It will not take many more years. Forget DRDO/OFB, private players didn't developed them just for show case!

3) INSAS is a system many rifles are there under INSAS. They are also continuously upgrading them. INSAS rifle is good for now but have to be replaced in future and will be replaced in time under F-INSAS.

4) New morters under development.

still our MOD dont have a clear roadmap for our army modernization...

i know FINSAS is coming , but i can not see any improvements and deadline for that project

They started F-INSAS in 2002/2003 with deadlines of initial induction of systems from 2012 and full transformation of Indian army by 2020. They have developed most of the technologies. Lets wait.

.
Lol not right now buddy....not ur army...ur army isnt better then ur adverseries....anyways bhim project was rejected as it was a failure.
