India to strengthen Andaman and Nicobar Command

For US navy there. I wonder which Indian port should US base its carrier battle group at?

I think Taiwan would be a more friendlier place for a US base and you guys are allies India and US are just strategic partners..

Even If it is there,no one will tell you and me!!

Not once the islands are taken by any chance. The A&N command has to be strengthened further to withstand an invasion force coming in from the Malaca straits.

The Islands are an ideal Naval Base; apart from being a great Aircraft Carrier!
Eventually we'll go on to see a Far Eastern Naval Command of the IN operating out of there.

Indian Navy To Take Control Of Andaman & Nicobar Command

After considering the race between neighbouring China and the US for the Indian Ocean region, the Indian government has decided to allow the Navy to take control of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC).
New Delhi had set up the ANC 13 years back, considering Andaman and Nicobar Islands as the South Asian country’s strategic outpost in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian government made the move after receiving the Kargil Committee report. According to the report, the ANC could help India easily monitor the region. At that time, the Army, Air Force and Navy were asked to ensure that all three services gear up to operate from the region. For the last 13 years, the three services have enjoyed the command on rotational basis.

However, the current competition between Beijing and Washington for the Indian Ocean region has forced the Indian government to change its policy regarding the ANC. During a recent meeting with top Defence Ministry officials, the senior Army, Air Force and Navy officers said that the ANC required a proper infrastructure. Otherwise, according to them, it would be difficult for the Indian forces to ensure national security. Navy officers were of the opinion that the development of ANC was not satisfactory mainly because the government’s lack of focus.

Commenting on the issue, a senior Navy officer said: “Some key infrastructure needs to come up immediately if the Navy is expected to operate with ease on the Eastern and Western board of Malacca Strait. Unfortunately, these have not been addressed. The fact that the command has been rotated among the three services has added to this delay.” According to him, although the Navy had operationalised the “INS Baaz” airbase at Campbell Bay in 2012, the position of the airbase did not allow the Indian forces to monitor the Malacca Strait well. The official stressed that the Campbell Bay is situated at the very northern tip of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and from there, it is impossible to keep an eye on any movements in the crucial Sea Lane of Communication that connects China to the rest of the world.

During the meeting, the Navy also informed the Defence Ministry that the naval forces badly required bigger fuel, ordnance and storage dumps at the ANC.

After considering all these aspects, the ministry has agreed to hand over the controls of the ANC to the Navy. According to sources close to the Defence Ministry, the ministry will soon officially ask the Cabinet Committee on Security to make the move. Sources also revealed that the ministry might also accept the demand for the hand over of the Special Force Command to the Army and the Aerospace Command to the Air Force. However, the Cyber Command will be controlled by the three services on rotational basis.

Meanwhile, defence experts have predicted that the Defence Ministry’s proposed move will certainly heat up the race for the Indian Ocean region, with India, China and the US trying to dominate the area.
